Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

Yes I followed the guide except for the backup part and yes I have Amon Ra. I did as you said; wiped cache, davik cache and data 3 times each, flashed mikg3.11 again, then rebooted. Left it alone for 20 minutes to be sure but still just the white screen with "HTC evo 4g" on it. It doesn't sleep, just sits with that screen on constantly. Buttons are non-responsive.

Thanks for the welcome and the initial suggestion. Any other ideas?

Yeah, I'm using the full wipe version. I also tried wiping boot and system along with cache, davik cache and system (all done thrice). Still same issue. White HTC screen on reboot, non- responsive.

the white htc screen is called the splash screen. how long are you waiting when the splash screen comes up? does it ever go to the bootanimation? does it loop from splashscreen to bootanimation and over again?
 
It's not going to anything other than the splash screen unless I load bootloader. The first time I waited for over an hour, but subsequently I've been giving it 10 to 20 minutes.
 
Well I reflashed among ra, just in case. After I wipes everything 3 times and installed mikg it reset on it's own, which was new and gave me hope that something might be going right. Same splash screen after 5 minutes though. I'm using a 32 gig class 10 card, though I also tried an old 8 gig class 4 I had lying around in case it was the card.

ok that is good. it never hurts to re-install a custom recovery.

and your sd cards are the right ones to use. i asked cuz the og evo has issues with 2g cards for some reason.

what exactly are you wiping? and also have you tried to use superwipe as well? if not try that in addition to wiping. it can be found in this guide under the flashing section.

Have you tried a fresh download? Cuz this is odd about what is happening..you appear to be doing everything correctly....
Perhaps try a fresh download and check the md5....are you familiar with that term?
 
I have redownloaded mikg but same issue, just going to the splash screen and staying on it indefinitely. This also happens with 2 versions of the stock ROM I have tried flashing. I am not familiar with the md5, so I guess that is a possibility.

Well, you can read for a better explanation about MD5 here:

But basically, the site where you download the rom from will have the md5 posted, which is a long string of numbers and letters. (kinda like a serial number) After you download it to your computer or phone, you can check the md5 of the download and see if it matches the md5 from the download site.

You do this by using a md5 program on your computer, which you can download for free and then run it.

What other 2 roms are you trying? Are they for the Evo4G?

I tried these after I initially tried to install mikg, but there was no change.

I figured I would throw this data from pre-flashing out there in case it's relevent:
Android 2.3.3
Baseband Version 2.15.00.0808
Kernel version 2.6.35.10-g13578ee htc-kernal@and18-2 #1
Software Number 4.54.651.1
PRI Version 2.15_003
Hardware Version 0004

Just to try something, I followed this guide

to flash the kernal from the mikg zip file. It seemed to go fine, but I'm still getting just the splash screen on startup.

Still able to get to Hboot and amon ra, so there is still hope to get a functional rom onto the phone yes?
 
ok first be careful about trying things for other phones. flashing the boot.img separately does not matter for the og evo.

i'm really sorry that you are having difficulty flashing roms right now. sp lets try something different. we are going to flash a ruu. this will turn you phone back to stock. it will also install the stock recovery as well.

here is the info:
1. download this file: PC36IMG_SuperSonic_GB_Sprint_WWE_4.54.651.1_Radio_2.15.00.0808_NV_2.15_release_220182_signed
2. rename it to PC36IMG (make sure that you delete any other PC36IMG files on your sd card) and move it to the sd card.
3. reboot into the bootloader and select yes when asked to update.

now once this is done then you can re-install amon ra and then try and flash a rom again.

hopefully this will fix your issue.

Great success! I am back to stock. Thank's for all of your help!


I noticed when I downloaded the file I had the right md5 on my computer. When I moved it to the sd card and checked again, the md5 was wrong and I had to move the file 4 or 5 more times before the md5 checked out on the sd card. Do you think this might have been the problem all along, or is that off base?

Hmmmm not sure. It might be, but if the other md 5's checked out.....

Now see if you can get your recovery back and you should be back in business to flash roms again.
 
I had rooted my phone back in April using this. I am now running HBOOT-6.16.1002. I have S-Off but I am unable to get into recovery. I have tried rerunning Revolutionay but it will not detect my phone. I have tried on both my wife's Vista laptop and my Windows 7 laptop. Any suggestions? I even did a factory default on my phone.

How sure are you that you even have recovery on there still?
go through the steps to put recovery on, I recommend Android flasher as the easiest way to do it.
 
I was unable to run the file to replace the recovery. I found another site that let me run a different way and now I have the recovery and rooted again. Now to find a ROM.
