Root ROOTING For Dummies

Thanks for the keeping this thread updated. I have been reading and rereading thread on multiple site and have a few questions.
So before this 3.30 came out it seems, by what is laid out on this thread, that the rooting process for the EVO was as simple as rooting the HERO?

I have been debating for a couple of weeks to attempt the manual method. While I rooted my Hero with no issue, with the manual method (detailed on XDA) there are part of their process that bothers me. It seems like after you root you are left with a crippled phone, no 4G, wireless tether or camera. Until you put a custom ROM on? Did this go only before 3.30?

Also the recovery part of the manual method seems vague. Using titanium backup? Speaking from my experience with the HERO I was able to boot into system screen and do a NAND backup?

If you are planning on using the unrEVOked method for ROOTing.. it will be almost exactly the same as ROOTing your HERO. I assume you have 3.30 (HBOOT 2.02), to you will unfortunately have to wait to use this method on the Guide.

From what I hear using the Manual HBOOT method on XDA, you lose a few features and have a few crippling incidents if not done EXACTLY like you are supposed to. (Others have tried that method on this Forum, so I am sure others can let you know how it wen't for them. I am bidding on a few cheap EVOs, so I will probably attempt that method if I can get one with the HBOOT 2.02). I am not sure if you still have that problem after you flash a custom ROM though. Anyone?

Hmm, you are required to use Titanium backup with the XDA method? Not too sure I like that. I haven't read the Thread, so I have no idea what they are doing.
 
I was successfully able to root my EVO using the walkthroughs here:

I have nand backups (Working) of both DamageControl 3.6 and Cyanogen 6.1 stable running with no issues.

Caveats:
- Can't use ROM Manager to manage reboots into recovery.. the phone burps all over itself and dies..
- Can un-root pretty easily.. two steps and you are back to stock.

I moved from CM 6.1 back to Damage Control for now.. don't like some of the things that are missing from CM at this time (besides 4G)

Question, how do I ensure 4G is still working if I do not live in an area where 4G is available?
 
I have tested on both DamageControl and Cyanogen and can say that it's pretty easy. Cyanogen doesn't have a 4G button to turn on the feature. If you are able to turn 4G on and it shows as "scanning", it's a fair bet that it works, though the only Pepsi challenge, as it were, is to test it in an area with 4G. My experience with 4G so far

- DamageControl: Works well
- Cyanogen: Not working yet.. no ETA, though I hear they are working on it.

I am currently testing a VirusROM (Anthrax) InfectedROMs - VirusROM Android Development Website which is built on the 3.30 stock distro.. best ROM I have used so far. Very fast, stable so far, with just enough tweaks to the UI to make it interesting. Good luck finding a stable download link, though.. took me forever to actually download the ROM.

Its pretty easy. Download terminal emulater from the market. Then open it.

Type "su" (without quotes) press enter.
# will now show up.
Type: "grep RSA /dev/mtd/mtd0" (again no quotes). Press enter.
Give it a few seconds and a bunch of stuff will appear. Now to assure you still have your RSA keys look for this at the end:
-------BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEYS------
-------END RSA PRIVATE KEYS------

If you see that then your 4g is still intact.
 
I am having trouble when I get to the last I turn on USB tethering on phone and wait for unrEVOked to work but I get a error message saying. "Error Code 67 .Registration failur. Your PCS Vision username and/or password may be incorrect. Please try again.
If someone can tell me how to fix this problem I will be quite happy. Thanks!

If you are on the stock ROM, it will not work. Heck, I do not even know if it will work with a custom ROM but I am thinking it will. What ROM are you running?

Why are you trying to Tether with unrevoked?

I am by no means trying to be rude but as matlock said why are you trying to tether? Error 67 is the generic error when trying to tether without having the sprint hotspot activated. I would really read the rooting tutorial again.
 
I rooted and flashed my rom on my htc evo, it was a success but i had the most recent OS 2.2 and now i am running 2.1-update 1 is this normal or did i screw up??
 
Umm yea. Lol. Its ok.. its as easy as flashing a new rom. Head over to xda and look through the devolopment section. Find a rom that catches your eye download and flash!
 
So I have the phone in the title.
Trying to update to Froyo. Any way I can get without paying some guy to do it for me?!
This is for Evo 4G users only correct?

Is there no way my MyTouch will ever get Froyo in the next YEAR?!
 
Added a new step to the Section 1: Pre-Rooting procedure

This will save you lots of time!!


STEP 0: App List Backup (optional)
Download an application called App List Backup from the Market.
It will save a list the currently installed applications from the Downloads section of the Market and save them to your SD Card.
After you reinstall the application from a Factory Reset or a Wipe, you can load the file and the Market will have all of your previously installed applications ready for you to download back onto your phone. Saves you a lot of time from writing them all down, then finding them, and re-downloading them all over again.

Also, you know how some applications like Titanium Backup save a backup of the actual .apk in the SD Card, then it installs them back onto your device, but you still have to go through every application and re-download them so you can receive updated? No more. App List Backup will do all the leg-work for you!!

(NOTE: Will not save any applications that have not been downloaded from the Market. So Third Party apps and non-Market apps will not be saved, even if you check them on the list.)

And Matlock, just for others reading this, The paid version(Pro) of Titanium Backup will do a batch restore that is quite painless....and it puts everything back where it was ref homescreens and such....very similar to what a nand backup would do....except on your current ROM obvisouly.

Are you saying this will re-create your desktop screens as in restoring a scene in sense?

I don't know about saving all of your scenes because I do not use the "scenes" feature of my phone. What I am saying is that your homescreens will look exactly like they did when you made the backup....the apps will be in the exact same place on the exact same screen. You do a "Batch backup" and then do a "Batch restore" when you have your Rom flashed. Once you restore it will still be "wrong". Then reboot your phone and, voila, everything looks just as it did.

Based on the above then it will do the same thing as restoring a scene in sense which is nothing more than restoring all screens with your app locations.

If you do a complete wipe then your saved scenes are erased! You do realize that, right? Just making sure we are communicating here so you don't save a scene and wipe and then wonder where it went.

Absolutely I understand. The fact that I can now restore them with Titanium is great news.
