Root ROOTING For Dummies

If you do a complete wipe then your saved scenes are erased! You do realize that, right? Just making sure we are communicating here so you don't save a scene and wipe and then wonder where it went.

Absolutely I understand. The fact that I can now restore them with Titanium is great news.

Why are you trying to Tether with unrevoked?
Sorry for the late response but exams are going on. So I have read through the tutorial and double check my steps and I did everything correctly but the last step as I said before. But now it worked Idk why I put it in teather I might have read it wrong but thanks for the guide it was great.

Awesome. Glad we could be of help with your Rooting needs!

I'm rooted, running Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo RLS 4. Previous software build was 3.29.xxx.x. I just went to check my radios, PRLs, etc and discovered I am at software number 3.30.651.3!!! Did I get an update and not know it? I appear to still be rooted, but will this cause me problems?

I have original release day EVO. Hardware 002. Any comments appreciated.

Myns rls4 is based on software version 3.30. What ever software the rom is based on is what will show on your phone.

Anyone seen any stock Sprint ROMs with the latest 3.30 software out yet? Currently rooted with stock Sprint 3.29 but would like the camera updates.

I keep seeing S-on and S-off, can you add this to the glossary? I can't find the meaning.

Thanks

S-OFF unlocks nand, which fully unlocks your phone. S is for security so turning it off gives you the ability to create nand back ups for instance. It is needed off in order to have full root access.

Here is a stock rooted rom based on the new software.

Okay, thanks to this thread from Matlock my EVO was rooted with Unrevoked 3.21. I've downloaded the latest Sprint ROM from the link above. I intend to flash this ROM using the current ROM Manager. My backup is still in place from the initial root.

My main question is - after flashing this ROM, can I still revert back to my original stock EVO condition from the NAND backup I did before I rooted?

EDIT: 2nd question - before flashing this new ROM, what kind of backup should I do to get my data back after I flash the new ROM?

1. Yes you can always revert back to an unrooted stock condition. You would simply have to flash Tue unrevoked s-on tool prior to unrooting. Those directions can be found in matlocks guide.

2. You can use titanium backcup prior to flashing the new rom. That will save all your apps along with the data.

And make sure you have a nandroid back up prior to flashing the new rom if you have not done so yet.

Well I just got my Evo two days ago and was trying to root following the thread. However, I could not, kept getting stuck when doing a backup (red exclamation point with phone pic). I have Android 2.2 and Software number 3.70.651.1, is it possible to root with this software number? And sorry for the dumb newbie question. Thanks.

********NEVER MIND***************

Just found the answer to my question on the first page of the thread. As a newbie and for reference maybe the title should be changed because no new person knows what an Hboot is, just a suggestion. I think "New EVO USERS READ HERE" is much better. Just my opinion.

Can someone verify if I am correct on this? This is my 3rd day on this forum and maybe I missed an update to rooting on EVO's thanks :)

And make sure you have a nandroid back up prior to flashing the new rom if you have not done so yet.
Thanks again. Will doing another NAND backup overwrite my previous one I did before root? Or is it just a matter of giving a new name and I'm good to go?

Any thoughts on the new maintenance update? Should we unrooted 3.30ers stay away from it? I am one of those waiting on unrEVO led to update.

Hi all, can I ask a couple of questions? Better to be safe than sorry, right?

I'm still running my original stock system, I rooted with Unrevoked 3/ClockworkMod so I could get tethering. I understand I need to update the ROM, and the radio. I also wish to replace ClockworkMod with Amon_RA. If someone can confirm that the following steps look sensible, then I'd be grateful! I spent an evening searching, but just want a bit of support.

(1) Do a backup
(2) Use ROM Manager to flash the Amon_RA 1.8 recovery image (or am I better off doing this with Fastboot in the bootloader?)
(3) Restore the XDA Sprint ROM with the OTA already applied, using Amon_RA recovery tool
(4) Do the same thing with the radio combo?

Thanks in advance.

1. Yes, nand first
2. Yes. Rom manager is the easiest way.
3. You can not restore a clockwork nand using among and vice versa.
3b. Once you successfully have amon flashed create a nand.
4.Flash the radio combo last.

I'm sure this was asked before. I'm on a custom rom and was wondering how do I go back to the orginal if I don't like the custom? Yes I backed up the original.

Im not very familiar with all this stuff but i got my phone rooted for the wifi but i dont ever use it so i was trying to unroot but find it impossible. Ive downloaded the two files and was trying to drag and drop to my sd card but my files did not show sd card anywhere.. I am stuck at this point if anyone could help thanks

-------------------------------------------

Can I only apply ROOT when installing a Custom ROM?
No. You can ROOT the device prior to installing a ROM with the UnrEVOked Method. Some ROOT methods do have a ROM you download that has ROOT already applied to the ROM.

How do I UN-ROOT my device?
See Section 7 of the Rooting Guide.

Will I still have all of my Apps and Contacts in my phone after I ROOT?
Yes. All of you Contacts and Applications will still be installed on your Device. This ROOT Method only ROOTs your device. It will not Wipe it (Factory Reset).

If you choose to do a Factory Reset prior to ROOTing your device (which is highly recommended so you can make a clean backup of your phone), you will lose all of your Apps and any Contacts saved to the phone it's self. But not to the Contacts saved to your Google Account(s).

Will I be able to install custom ROMs with this ROOT Method?
Yes. You will be fully able to install Custom ROMs with the unrEVOked method.

Should I Downgrade to 2.1 before I ROOT?
NO. You do not need to downgrade with this ROOT Method.

I am running Android 2.1; should I upgrade to 2.2 before I ROOT?
You are not required to upgrade your device to the current 2.2 Version for this ROOT Method.
If you plan on using custom ROMs on your device, you do not need to upgrade.
If you do not plan on ever using custom ROMS, and just want to keep the Stock HTC Sense on your device, and use all of the ROOT-ONLY apps, then it is recommended to upgrade to the latest 2.2 before ROOTING.

Will this BRICK my phone?
No. I have yet to hear ANYONE use my tutorial or even unrEVOked for that matter, ever BRICK their device. You would have to not follow a single instruction and do it with a blindfold on to really do damage to your device. And I highly doubt you want to do that.

Do I need to UN-ROOT to apply the OTA Sprint/HTC Updates?
Yes. UN-ROOT your device with Section 7 of the Guide and apply the OTA updates from Sprint/HTC. Then go through the Guide again to RE-ROOT your device. You MAY lose your Applications and Contacts doing this. Some users have and some have not.

Will I lose my 4G if I ROOT?
No. You will not lose your 4G service with this ROOT Method.
You may however, lose it when installing ROMs. Some Mods have not completely got 4G working with their Custom ROMs. This is especially so with the STOCK ASOP Roms (Actual Android Rom with no Carrier Specific or Device Manufacture changed to the ROM.)

Can I still UN-ROOT my phone if I install a custom ROM or KERNEL?
Yes. You will still be able to UN-ROOT even after installing a custom ROM or KERNEL.

When FLASHING a new ROM and KERNEL, do I need to install one before the other?
Yes. FLASH the ROM First, the KERNEL Second.

Will ROOTING Void my Warranty?
Yes. Technically.
If you ROOT your device and take it to Sprint for any reason, and the Representative notices the phone is ROOTED, they have the authority to revoke your Insurance Coverage. They also have the ability to contact HTC and have the Manufacturer Warranty removed.

I just ROOTED my phone and now I am getting a notification to Update my SPRINT Voicemail.. Should I?
Yes.
Go ahead and update it. It will not hurt anything.

Just FLASHED a ROM and now I can't download anything from the Market.
Your data may have not been wiped properly. Refer to Section 8 and flash either the ROM once more, or flash a NAND backup of your original ROM, then try and flash ROM your wanting.

While using unrEVOked, when it says "Waiting for Device".. I have it connected, but nothing happens.
Reinstall the from Section 2 Step 2.

In ROM Manager, when I flash Clockwork Recovery "An error occurred while flashing your recovery" pops up.
Enable WiFI and that may correct your problem.

Downloaded a ROM and now my apps won't update.
Clear the Market Cache.
Setting > Applications > Manage Applications > Market > Clear Cache

After I used unrEVOked to ROOT my device, my Security is still listed as S-ON. How do I get to to say S-OFF so I can FLASH ROMs?
Refer to Section 4: unrEVOked Forever of the guide.

More Q&A to follow! Also, when more are written, I will organize them into sections like on the Main Guide.
I'm in the process to 'root' my phone. I'm at the 'unrEVOked recovery reflash tool' splash screen. It's waiting for device but I've already plugged in my phone and turned on USB debug. the 'found new hardware wizard' show s up but dont' but nothing else...

HELP!!
I can't get past step 6 of section 2 of the rooting procedure. I'm running the reflash_package tool and it says' waiting for device' I've plugged in the device, set the USB debug but nothing is happening. any suggestions?

Thanks

So can newer evo's be rooted? I see there is a certain hboot number that can't but can you still apply the s-off and flash a rooted ROM if you have one of these HBOOT revisions that are unrootable?
