Root ROOTING For Dummies

No I didnt use unrevoked3. It was a program that was designed by the guy on ebay so it will be the first time I am going to even download unrevoked.

When you reboot into bootloader do you see s-on or s-off

EDIT: The way I understand it, is if you see s-off you are nand unlocked (unrevoked forever)

I have a Wildfire. I think I am going to 'root' it any day now, but I have ordered a new 16gb memory card.. Is is better to wait to do this until I have the new card or doesn't it matter? I currently have two 2gb cards, one in my phone and one I could reformat. Also, probably a really daft question but is formatting it from my pc different to formatting it from my phone, and will both/either way allow me to store apps on it. Many thanks in advance,

Read the first post in this thread. It describes in detail rooting and flashing.....it also has info on unrooting if you are going in that direction.

I am already rooted at the moment. I am asking all these questions because I want to know whats the best way to go back a unrooted Evo phone as if I just got it from the store :)

I don't think that it would matter if you got it now or later. I am not familiar with what capabilities the Wildfire has after being rooted. The Evo has the capability with the right programming to use part of the sdcard just like internal memory thus making app storage not a problem. You might want to ask your questions over in the wildfire forum though.

First off, we need to find out what your hboot version is. you would need to reboot to the bootloader to find that if you don't know it already. Power off the phone then hold volume down+power at the same time to get to the bootloader.

Okay sir. I wanted to ask once the the white screen shows up I will go and press the power button after selecting the bootloader by moving up and down with the volume control? This will show what hboot version I have? By doing this does it mess up the phone? How do I exit the screen?

Thank you for answering all questions

The screen that shows up should be the bootloader. It should have an hboot version at the top. I suspect it is 2.10

It will look similar to this:

SUPERSONIC EVT2-3 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-2.02.0000
MICROP-041f
TOUCH PANEL-ATMEL224_16ab
RADIO-2.15.00.09.01

Once you get to that white screen it will tell you your hboot version, it will also tell you whether you are s-off or s-on.

You will need to download 2 things. The first is the Unrevoked s-on tool:
http://downloads.unrevoked.com/forever/current/unrevoked-forever-son.zip

The second is the PC36IMG.zip file for your hboot:
MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service

STEP 1: DOWNLOAD
Download both the PC36IMG.zip and the S-On Tool to your PC Desktop. DO NOT EXTRACT
(NOTE: Make sure the file is named PC36IMG.zip exactly. Some Windows OS hide any extensions by default; so make sure it is not named PC36IMG.zip.zip when you rename it.)

STEP 2: MICRO USB
Connect your device to your PC with the Micro USB cord.

STEP 3: DISK DRIVE
Chang your charging options to Disk Drive.
Menu > Setting > Connect to PC > Default Connection Type > Disk Drive > Done

STEP 4: S-ON TOOL TO SDCARD
Transfer unrevoked-forever-son.zip to the ROOT of your SDCard.
(Do not transfer the PC36IMG.zip yet)

STEP 5: TURN OFF DEVICE
Power down the device by holding the Power Button for 2 seconds. Allow it to shutdown completely. Wait about 10 seconds before next step.

STEP 6: RECOVERY MODE
Hold down VOL DOWN + POWER until device boots into a White Screen.
Move to RECOVERY by using the VOL DOWN toggle and select by using POWER button.

STEP 7: FLASH ZIP
Select unrevoked-foreverson.zip in the selection area and press POWER button to complete the FLASH.

STEP 8: IS S-ON, ON?
When the FLASH is complete, Reboot the device into the Bootloader screen by holding down VOL + POWER until it boots into the White Screen. Check to make sure it says S-ON on the TOP. If it does, select RECOVERY with the VOL DOWN toggle. (continue to step 9)

If it says S-OFF, repeat STEPS 5 - 7 until it says S-ON.
(NOTE: If still showing S-OFF after a few flashes, go ahead and proceed to step 9. It may show S-OFF, but it is really set to S-ON. Once you flash the PC36IMG.zip file, it should display S-ON.)

STEP 9: TURN OFF DEVICE
Power down the device by holding the Power Button for 2 seconds. Allow it to shutdown completely. Wait about 10 seconds before next step.

STEP 10: RECOVERY MODE
Hold down VOL DOWN + POWER until device boots into a White Screen.
Move to RECOVERY by using the VOL DOWN toggle and select by using POWER button.

STEP 11: TRANSFER PC36IMG.zip TO SDCARD
Connect the MICRO USB Cord. There is an option for this in both the Amon RA and Clockwork recovery.
Transfer the PC36IMG.zip to the ROOT of your SDCard.

STEP 12: UNHOOK USB FROM PC + USB OFF
SAFELY remove the USB from the PC and then turn OFF USB in Recovery.

The Device will check for the PC36IMG.zip and then ask you YES/NO to apply the newly introduced update. Press VOL UP = YES or VOL DOWN = NO.
Once Completed, press VOL UP to reboot.

wow thanks for taking out the time and helping me. Its much appreciated. I will probably do this on the weekend. If everything goes according to plan how long will this process take?

STEP 11: TRANSFER PC36IMG.zip TO SDCARD
Connect the MICRO USB Cord. There is an option for this in both the Amon RA and Clockwork recovery.
Transfer the PC36IMG.zip to the ROOT of your SDCard.
(Where you say transfer to your sd card would I just do it by going to the main screen of my phone and selecting disk drive?)

STEP 12: UNHOOK USB FROM PC + USB OFF
SAFELY remove the USB from the PC and then turn OFF USB in Recovery.

There is an option to turn off usb in recovery?

STEP 4: S-ON TOOL TO SDCARD
Transfer unrevoked-forever-son.zip to the ROOT of your SDCard.

What do you mean by saying to the ROOT of the sd card? Is it just place the file anywhere in the sd card?

The whole process should take you about 15 minutes.

The root of the sd card is the main folder not any subfolder.

Yes you can turn off usb in recovery.

So after this whole process my phone will be like brand new? With all the radios and 4G Wimax working perfectly? :) I think its just paranoia :/

another thing i might suggest is to disable your anti-virus program on your computer as well as your phone. i missed that the first time i tried to root. as soon as i disabled them then i had no problem rooting.

Thanks for your help Xtremedays. But I do have a dumb question: is there anything I should install onto the SD card (like, the driver folder)?

So I rooted my phone today using this method and everything works fine, except every time I flash a ROM it doesn't get past the boot image. Someone help pleaseee.
