Root [S-OFF] Juopunutbear S-OFF -Beta Release

Ignore above, I re-downloaded the files and I think I had a Sprint Evo 3D version in the first place. Tried the VM version and SUCCESS!

Where do I go from here? What is 4EXT from the guide and do I need it?

4ext is just another recovery. You should try it... It's a really nice recovery! Not required though. So you are successfully s-off?

Where do you want to go from here? You can flash any rom, (some will require an hboot change which you can now do), you can flash files through the bootloader.

I can teach you how to do that now that you are s-off. Lets start by flashing 4ext recovery through the bootloader.

Download this file. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/100923173/4ext_PG86IMG.zip

Rename to PG86IMG.zip and put it on the root of your sd card. (Not in any folders)

Reboot into your bootloader. When asked to update, say yes with volume up. When finished press power button when prompted.

Never leave PG86IMG files on your sd card. as soon as your phone boots back up, delete or rename the file. It's presence will prevent you from entering recovery in an emergency.

Now check out your new touch screen recovery and flash whatever rom you want.

Yeah the DOS script said Success, S-OFF was successful. Weird though, the first time I tried to start it instead of doing the annoying VM bootup song it buzzed and turned off.

I moved that zip file to my Sdcard but when I "adb reboot bootloader" it never mentions an upgrade. I tried flashing the zip through recovery which did nothing. Do I need to flash through fastboot like I flashed TWRP?

This file won't flash in recovery. It is a different kind of file. If your bootloader didn't find the file, it is either not on the root of the sd card, or the more likely scenario, not named properly. Make sure it's not called PG86IMG.zip.zip.

Sometimes, If people can't see the file extensions when renaming the files they accidentally add .zip to the file name. Basically, take that downloaded file and delete "4ext_" from the name, leaving just PG86IMG.

Does your bootloader read s-off at the top?

Yes it says s-off at the top. I always show extensions in Windows so I know it's named correctly (PG86IMG.zip pasted from filename). Am I rebooting into bootloader correctly with that command?

ETA: You forgot a step ;) I had to select "BOOTLOADER" in the bootloader screen for it to read the zip file on the SDcard.

Touch Screen enabled recovery... So awesome!

So can I flash any Evo 3D ROM or does it need to be an Evo V ROM? What about the OTA update, should I do that? If so, when? I was having a lot of problems with Texts not working before the update.

Oh yeah... When you reboot into bootloader using adb, it actually puts you in fastboot. So just use the volume keys to navigate to "bootloader" and hit the power button to select it.

You can also get to the bootloader by doing a battery pull and then holding volume down+power. No need for adb!

I added this before you posted and I don't think you saw it:

Lol yeah! I didn't realize that you were accessing bootloader through adb which puts you in fastboot. If you do it the other way, by holding volume down and power it puts you directly in the bootloader!

I have an Evo 3d myself, but from what I understand, you can flash all of the evo 3d roms after following the steps in this thread:
http://androidforums.com/evo-v-4g-a...ng-turning-your-phone-into-evo-3d-thread.html

Can someone with an Evo V verify whether this is neccessary to flash 3d roms?

You can't take the OTA while rooted. You need to be on stock recovery for an OTA. So if you ever do want to take one, you need to run the RUU first and be stock. Then you can root the update.

This is true.

Since you have already flashed a custom recovery, I recommend flashing just the firmware (radio and PRI) from the OTA that is linked in this post. That should fix the radio problems from the original VM build. The rest of the OTA is patches to the stock ROM, so unless you are planning to run stock I wouldn't worry about them.

There is no need to do the "fix everything" thread at this point unless you have problems with the updated firmware.

What about the HBOOT, PRI, PRL, and Radio from the "Turn your phone into a 3D" thread? Should I do those too? Do some overlap? Is there a specific order of operations?

The PRI and radio overlap the ones from the OTA and they are from older Sprint GB builds so I would try the OTA versions first. For the hboot, if you want to run GB and/or AOSP based ROM's I suggest using either the ENG 1.04 version in that thread with 4EXT or the JBear GB 1.50.5050 version if you plan to use TWRP touch recovery.

The PRL is entirely up to you and it's a matter of opinion how much difference that makes. I normally just use the current version from the update PRL function in settings.

Ok, I flashed the FW from the OTA update you linked to. Is there a way I can verify that it stuck?

I'll probably try non-AOSP based ROMs before I screw with the HBOOT for now. Any ROM you recommend? I'm looking for great battery life and for it to be reliable and with all the bloat removed.

If you go into About phone/Software information/More in settings and it shows the baseband version as 1.09.00.0706 it stuck.

I don't run the Evo V specific ROM's since I have an Evo 3D but from what I've seen on this forum the Harmonia or Mobster HD Lite ROM's might be a good place to start given your preferences.

Good luck!

I'll wait for confirmation if I can do Evo V 3D ROMs on my phone or not, I', just hoping for a JB ROM on my phone.

Took me about 15 minutes to complete the S-Off procedures. My EVO V is now Unlocked and S-Off with JuopunutBear. Success with the wire trick on first try! :D

Will a spare 1 gig SD card work? Is it large enough? [looks like it must be between 2-16gb, damn, I don't have a spare card in that size range]
I also have a copious supply of 24awg solid strand cross connect wire, that should be just fine for the wire right? If not, I can upgrade to DS3 coax, which will take a bit more stripping to get a nice end.

I'd like to avoid the paper clip...a guy just recently bricked his phone using a paperclip. It seems the clip got stuck in the hole and he had trouble removing it. Maybe he used a jumbo clip?

EDIT:

Also, I'm pretty sure it's pronounced in a cuban accent: "Ju open it bear" :)

I just looked and it said this wont work with 64bit windows 7, anyone get it to work?

It's not SUPPORTED with 64 bit. That doesn't mean it won't work, but it does mean the Juopunut Bear hasn't tested it and given it their stamp of approval. I am sure there's a list of people who were successful in using windows 7 64 bit, but you have to decide if you feel comfortable. See if you can find those people and get an idea of their experience.

DO NOT go to the Juopunut website and ask them if it's OK to use 64 bit. They will be very short with you and tell you to read the instructions.

I personally went the LiveCD route using Ubuntu, and it was a pleasure. YMMV.

I used 64 bit and had no problems. Well I did have one problem but it was due to an insufficient wire, not windows 64 bit. There's compatibility mode in Windows 7 64 bit and it can run 32 bit software just fine. It supports both.

While i was trying to do the wire trick my phone shut off and wont turn back on or charge. Any help? :/

It happened to me as well. Scared the crap out of me. I went to the juopunut bear help chat and they told me I hit the "deep sleep". Their advice was leave it plugged into the wall for 8 hrs and don't touch it. I left it for the rest of the night, and then all night while I slept. Got up in the morning. Still dead. Panic ensued!

Did a battery pull, then turned on. The little Juopunut bear icon showed up on the screen waiting for me to attempt the wire trick again. I was using a wire that was too thin and wasn't working. I grabbed a new wire once my phone was revived and got the wire trick on the first try. Just needed a better wire.

If you revive your phone, watch this video to help with the wire trick timing.

Has anyone had an issue with a driver during this process. Right after I do the wire trick my pc fails to find a driver for QHSUSB_DLOAD device and the process won't continue. I have tried twice on 2 different computers but no luck. Just RUU'd back until I can figure it out

It will take you less time to download and burn the Ubuntu LiveCD than it will to figure out your driver issue. Once you do that, and are booted into Ubuntu, download the juopunut bear .zip file and go from there. There may be one linux command that isn
