Samsung Fascinate Lounge

Just about.
If your DVD has commercial encryption you will need another free program to break that. DVD Decrypter, AnyDVD, DVD Shrink there's plenty out there. I used AnyDVD which is a free trial of like 3 weeks. Honestly I ripped everything I wanted to in less than 2 weeks so it didnt matter to me when my trial ended. But there are several permanently free ones.
It helps to have a faster computer when converting these. My i7 rig handles the job nicely but even slower rigs are ok they just take longer

Got it, I may make that my Saturday project...if I can get some time. I still need to read up on rooting and such!

Hello. See this is all we need. Stop by and say hello. We need too get more of the usual suspects in here too. Although just a handful of us gave this place a nice boost today

Maybe post a shoutout about this thread in the Fascinate forum?

Yes agreed! This is a lounge...not a funeral (hopfully)!

Anyway I'm REALLY hoping that verizon releases the white back cover...mine is always covered....but I like the idea that my phone is even a little unique

I'd really like a higher quality "Captivate-esque" back cover, my boss has a Captivate and it looks alot nicer.

Huzzah, for it is Friday. And I read that as "modding the back pirate piece", which would've been interesting.

Oh yeah it has the metal/rubber feel to it doesn't it?

Oh yeah it has the metal/rubber feel to it doesn't it?

It's more of a faux carbon fiber/graphite look and feel with a grippy metal "Galaxy S" imbedded.

Gimme a sec, I'll take a pic of my boss' Captivate and post pictures of the back.

hey guys, just thought id drop by over here and check out what was going on :)

Glad to have ya! Join in on the randomness!

Here it is:

OhO yeah I like it. If we had that...we wouldn't even need a case...or that's why I have one., to protect the back plate

Yeah, it feels MUCH more high quality. On top of that, the solid black part below the textured part is actually what holds the cover on. You slide it down to take the cover off, VERY slick indeed.

I must admit I like the faux carbon fiber look. The Captivate also feels more solid and metal than our SF. Mind you I do love the SF of course but the back is superior on the Cap.
Here's a fun little story:
The manager of my gym has a Cap. so we were comparing and contrasting the other day. He also preferred the feel of his own Cap. So we're comparing our Galaxy S's and he was like why dont you go to AT&T....after I stopped laughing :p:rolleyes: I reminded him everyone in my family and most of my friends are on VZW. I also made him DL speedtest and FCCtest and we ran the 3G speed tests. In our town VZW dominates just as it does in most places. Let's just say his Cap was averaging around 500kbps down and 300up. I was pulling closer to 2K down and 800up. He was like wow this thing is a piece of junk [his Cap.]. I reminded him it was the cousin/brother phone to my SF so the hardware was largely the same. That much of his problem was AT&T related. It was an interesting reminder of how many people aren't as esoteric about their phones as we are in here. He'd never heard of AF. I told him join us in here. I did my workout and on the way out he wanted to pow-wow a bit more on the differences between our phones. I reminded him that hardware wise we had the same guts, [cpu, gpu, screen]. He had more internal storage I had a 16gb card, blah blah blah. In the end he felt he was ok and that we basically had the same phone. He complained about his battery life. Till I told him I was running an OC/UV kernel and I showed him setcpu running 1.2 told him he was at 1 even. I really had to go so I ripped out a page from my training log and wrote down some benchmarking apps to DL from market. So I gave him all the usual suspects, Quadrant, Linpack, SpeedPi, NeoCore, etc.
I went in yesterday and I was like did you get those apps. He was like yeah. So to mess with him and knowing he's at stock. I said why dont we compare Quadrant scores. So we fire them up. He got 872 or something and I pulled like 2K+, He was like :eek:WTF!! I said hey I gotta workout but I'll talk to you after. So after my workout I explained to him how Quadrant is only so accurately per se because of I/O and we had a nice little chat. I confessed to messing with him.:p Of course now he wants to root and OC and get voodoo and ROM's the whole nine yards. I dont think he's joined AF yet but he was working late last night and had to come right back around and open at 5am this morning so thats understandable.

@Kabob
thats awesome! really impressive for sure and much better than what comes stock.

saps, yeah i love talking android with people at work/real life and explaining/comparing how things are and how much better they can be with a little tinkering.

Agreed....now what I didnt tell my gym friend was the whole soft brick escapades but he has my number so Im waiting for that call ;):p:D

Ha, that's awesome!

Oh dear..now saps is starting to corrupt people in the real world, too. I propose we make him always start off his conversations with "Hi, I'm __ and I'm a root addict" or something. Perhaps make it a step in the support group..

I agree, it's nice to talk to people about Android stuff. The only family member that has something with Android is my uncle, but I do have some coworkers with them (although two have Incredible's and one has an X). Even convinced one to give LauncherPro a second shot, since he tried it and immediately didn't like it. Yay for pointing out all its little details and how customized you can make it.

OK, question for the lounge. I noticed saps mentioning Quadrant as a benchmarking tool so I downloaded it and went to System Information. Under CPU it says:

Current freq: 800 MHz
Max freq: 1000 MHz
Min freq: 1000 MHz

So the min and the max are 1 GHz but somehow I'm swinging 800 MHz? Is that just a big in the app or is it because I'm not running anything or what?

No, no, I've been in the corruption game a long, long time.:p

See this is what the Lounge is all about.

You guys realize this Lounge has more activity in the last 24 hours than any week of its existence. Shoot if we keep this up we'll catch that no good DInc lounge :D JK I bounce in there every once in awhile too.

On that note, apparently we can be looking forward to an AF app, which also has a IRC built in. The Mods and Guides are beta testing it now. They wouldnt/couldnt say when its dropping but I must assume sooner than later. That will be nice. I know I use the xda app almost everyday.

@Kabob: I'm guessing this is after a restart or installing the app? You usually have to set it right by dragging the slider(s) left and then back. Annoying little bug, but could be worse.

@saps: Aha! So the condition started young.. Ah well, corrupting people is fun. The AF app sounds interesting. Though tbh I don't do much browsing on my phone, most of the time I'm on a work computer or my own. But still would be nice rather than zooming in/out and all that jazz.

Good question. The hummingbird cpu is design to throttle down [kinda like almost all desktop/laptop cpu's these days]. The idea is to conserve power and battery. Basically why run at full speed if your phone is sleeping. For the stock cpu the increment steps available are 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1000Mhz respectively. So its very common for the cpu not to be at fullbore.
Here's a ShootMe I just took.
snap20101022_103740.png

Notice the Time in State section. Now this will vary based on use but clearly for me I've been at 100Mhz the longest and 1200Mhz the least. In fact I've learned when I watch movies on my SF the cpu is usually just at 400Mhz.
So if anyone does not have SetCPU I'd grab it its very informative. Admittedly, its less functional and practical if you dont have a custom OC/UV kernel. But, thats a whole 'nother conversation

Ahh, got it! I thought that might be the case (why run full power when not under load) but wasn't sure.

Much thanks guys!!

Actually unless you lock in the max speed using Performance option in SetCPU. You will usually see 800Mhz displayed in that tab:
snap20101006_012209.png

Basically the cpu does not need to crank all the way up for Quadrant to merely open. Again its part of that whole system management complex

Im the same way with most of these posts coming from a desktop [work or home]. But on occassion I have and will get on AF from the SF and yeah its pretty good but certainly more tedious

Well yes, but in the SS *coughShootMeAddictcough* it shows the min as 100 while Kabob said max AND min were set to 1000. Thought that was a known bug with SetCPU.

Now as aforementioned you can set to Performance and that will lock the cpu at max speed [whatever your kernel's is]. This does improve response since you dont wait that fraction of a second to ramp up. Benchmarks are higher blah blah blah. But yeah outside benchmarking there is no need to not have it on Conservative. Save the battery, the performance will be there when called upon.
In fact, give there are even people out there chasing freakish battery life and they are running the 1000LV kernel [which if anyone does not know runs 1225mv for the cpu as opposed to 1300mv from stock]. And while this mathematically and in a linear sense looks like only a 6% reduction in voltage; in actuality the battery life increase in the real world, again varying based on usage, can be as much as 30% better. So they take this 30% better battery life kernel and then underclock it and run it at just 800Mhz. Which is still decent speed for sure but these guys go days on end on their battery. Now personally I dont need to have a battery which lives for 4 days. I'd rather have a 1.4Ghz cpu running 1400mv or whatever it will need, because Im more of a power addict and the battery on the SF is decent enough. As is, Im running the 1200LV which is still undervolted at 1250mv and my battery life is certainly better than stock. I'd guess its 15-20% better but who knows.
In fact our friend GoBruins is running the 1000LV and he has a screen shot somewhere around here showcasing how he went 3 1/2 days on a charge  sickeningly great battery life
