Setting up CM6

Andy,

I think you answered my question re: kernels in another thread, but I have another for you (or whoever). If the CM6 mod already has a kernel that can be overclocked, will it/can it go past 691? Also, what is the difference between 'CFS' and BFS'? I live in the Texas so anytime I see CFS I think of chicken fried steak. ;) LOL!

Yes, the stock kernel can be overclocked

Look here [Kernel][GPL] UncappedKernel (CFS/BFS versions) [2.6.29.6][11/18/2010] - xda-developers The best way to look at it is, if you use gps, google navigation on a regular basis, stick with the CFS kernels. BFS kernels can break GPS

Does a theme bog down the speed of CM6?

Also, a few times now CM6 RC1 has frozen up on something (don't recall exact app) and I've had to pull battery out because nothing would work. Has anyone experienced this??

Are you overclocked ?? if yes you may want to tweak it back a little and find a happy median

Try wiping davlik cache and cache and reflashing the RC1

I might have asked this question before, will that wipe the way my screens/layout look? I know to do an android first. Will I have to flash gapps and things like that?

All will be as you left it, ringtones, screens, text messages..... Just reflash the RC1 after wiping davlik cache and cache

How do I do that?

Try setcpu or overclock widget from the android market. Setcpu is $1.99 (unless you are a member of xda), OC widget for root users is free. I use oc widget, it works fine for me. Setcpu has more adjustments. If you try oc widget, set the widget on a screen, press it and then set your frequencies with the screen off and the screen on.

What frequencies are you guys running at?? What Kernals? This is so new to me I don't know where to start.

Like I said I use oc widget. First, you can oc the stock kernel. You do not need the CFS or BFS kernels to oc.

CFS kernels are stable and BFS kernels can break GPS. If you use gps a lot, stick with the CFS kernels.

Be aware, some phones can overclock to 768 and others can't. I would determine what frequency your phone can handle before flashing one of Deca's kernels.

My settings are simple, 556 min and 768 max.

Andy,

When you say 556 min and 768 max, you're referring to 'screen on' right? What do you have your 'screen off' set to? Do you have the 'Differ Freq Screen Off' checked? I imagine anything higher than 768 is not stable correct? I didn't realize I could go higher than 691! I was tinkering w/ the OC widget and I clicked on detect frequencies and all of a sudden my max went higher than 691...LOL! I'm a bonafide noob! :D

When I open the oc widget, the screen has the min frequency and the max frequency. I set the min frequency at 556, I set the max frequency at 768. Then I press the 'Set To It' button. That's it;) I do NOT go into the advanced settings( which btw has 'screen on' settings and 'screen off' settings)

Unless you flash a kernel which allows to go higher, 768 is the max.

By the way, there is a kernel floating around that will allow you to go up to 844, but most if not all, will freeze up and you will have to do a battery pull. 787 was stable for me but a bit inconsistent;)

Thanks for the reply! I had to go into the advanced in order to allow me to see the 768. It was only showing me a max of 691 until I did that which is weird.

Remember, if freezes or random reboots happen, lower the frequency until you find that happy place for your phone. If your phone can handle 768, so be it:D:D

sorry if this has been beat to death but i'm a little confused; besides being able to set freqs to 768, what is/are the benefits of flashing decad3nce's kernels if the kernel that comes with CM6 can already be OC'd? is it that noticeable? because if it is then i want it ha

For me it's trial and error. Some of his kernels work well for me and others don't.

The biggest advantage to flashing the kernels though is lock screen lag, battery life can/will improve, if you play games on your phone, the BFS kernels will help with that. Deca's kernels are always up to date with the kernel source.

using RC1 and my phone randomly reboots once a day or so, and boot-loops 3x before finally starting up... much more often than the 2 month old nightly I was running before that. Think I'll install the latest nightly... has anyone else had similar experiences with RC1?

Are there any kernels that anyone swears by? CM6 is nice, but all my ROMs (even CM6!) seem to get slow after a while... how can I avoid this without doing a full wipe?

Also -- last time I tried wiping Davlik Cache I got an error -- "Error: run deldalv via console!". maybe that is why it is slow... Just tried it again, same error message. How can I fix this?
