Siyah Gingerbread kernel (v2.x)

I think there is still an issue with beta 8. Core 1 does in fact kick in but not as often as I would like to see it. Core 0 seems to do a bit too much work for my liking.

I'm back on beta 6 for the time being.
 
Yeah I've gone back to beta 6 aswell. I didn't really notice about the second core not kicking in but battery seemed to be rubbish.
 
Siyah 2.2 beta9... been there... done that... taking the developers advice..

"Last known good beta:
(In case you have a problem, use this version before going back to previous release)
v2.2beta6"

First thing I found was that it would not play my HD videos.

Reverting back to beta6 which was the last build that really worked for me. Although, after a bit of trial and error, beta8 was starting to shape up.

It seems that beta's 7, 8 and 9 are pandering to CM ROM to the detriment of others. :(

Might view things differently tomorrow.

The only thing I've checked out is internet. Is it that bad? I would try myself but you seem willing and able

It might just be me old boy. A bit tired now. I suggest reading the change log before flashing as it comes with known issues.

As I said, I may give it another go tomorrow/later today after an infusion of coffee. :rolleyes:
 
Oh well... a new day and a fresh infusion of coffee!

However, my grouchy opinion from last night has not changed. If you are using Siyah 2.2 beta6... then I would be inclined to stay on it for the time being.

In fact I notice this morning that the, "Known issues", list for beta9 has grown overnight.

I think that even gokhanmoral, the developer, knows that beta's 7, 8 and 9 may not be up to scratch and recommends beta6.
 
I'm on TWD 2.5 for now as this comes with CWM 4.0.0.2 which allows CheckROM kitchen updates to be installed via the app, as I've found you cannot install a mod with Siyah as this is on CWM5. Its not a huge problem I know, as all you need to do is to then boot up into recovery mode and install manually, but it is an annoyance.

Battery was poor on TWD overnight for me (about 8%) but I will give it a go over the next day or two in order to have a more informed opinion. Otherwise I will go back to beta6 and just remember to install any kitchen updates manually (not that i do so very often)

I've now ditched TWD for Siyah 2.2 Beta6.
After more use, I found it quite laggy compared to Siyah.

Manual kitchen updates for me from now on:)
 
2.2 beta10 Dark Knight is now available to download

removed symlink from /mnt/emmc to /mnt/sdcard/external_sd
experimental fix for bt problems (confirmed by goose2600@XDA that it is working)
disabled SCHED_MC
experimental lower screen-brightness values for low light conditions (not yet configurable, but it will be)
fix for touchkey backlight not turning off
fixed liblights not being copied for miui and oxygen roms. copying lights library suppressed only for CM7 and derivatives.
DarkKnight edition is a safer version which doesn’t let you change some values (freq or voltage) that will make your device unstable (for instance, CPU undervolting is disabled completely in darkknight edition). So, if you don’t know how things work you better use DarkKnight edition. It is aimed for stability and battery life. The default i/o scheduler is noop and cpu governor is lulzactive@100-1200. Some experimental features may be disabled in DarkKnight editions.

known issues:

only external sd is mounted over usb in CWM recovery.

Will stick with Siyah 2.2 beta6 which is giving me very good results so far.

What we need is someone to test this version.

Someone who is daring, fearless, intrepid, skilful and above all else...

My verdict: Avoid!
Cwm navigation is very very slow. The bar would hopelessly be playing catch up with my key presses so invariably I would over shoot and have to key back all the time.
not to mention I thought it screwed my efs. I tried testing to see if a checkrom kitchen install would work automatically which it didn't and when it booted it failed to recognize my Sim and imei so pants began to quake violently. I put beta 6 back on and luckily I didn't need to restore from a backed up efs image.

Am I alone in starting to lose confidence in this kernel?
apparently there is a voodoo kernel out soon with checkrom so might give it a go
 
don't say that after i've only just got it working!!

seriously though, there seem to have been so many new beta versions, each seem to cause issues with different people, it's getting hard to see the wood from the trees.

be interesting to see the spec of this voodoo kernel
 
Hey all, can anyone tell me how Siyah v2.1.1 compares to v2.2 beta6?

I'm running CheckROM RevHD v.3.1.1 with speedmod-kernel_s2_k2_16, also installed XXKI4 modem (don't if that part is relevant, I've only had the s2 for a week, so I'm still learning!). After I installed speedmod I noticed a fair improvement in battery drain (which fixed the large percentage of Android OS in battery usage) compared to whatever I had before (not sure, did a full wipe before installing CheckROM though).

I'm still hardpressed to stretch 12 hours on battery however (Not sure what constitutes as heavy usage and if that's the reason why I don't get much?), so I thought I might give Siyah a try? So I guess mainly what I want to know is how v2.1.1 compares to v2.2 beta6 when it comes to battery life? And if it's roughly the same is there any advantage to getting the latter, since v2.1.1 is conveniently in the KitchenPro app?

p.s. Thanks for reading my long winded post if you happened to actually read it. :D

The simple and honest answer is that you will have to try it for yourself.

Different ROM's and differenent kernels suit users different needs.

There is no one ROM & kernel combination to suit everyone.

I would describe myself as a heavy user who does not play games on his phone and have CheckROM 3.1.1 + Siyah 2.2 beta6 kernel on "lulzactive" governor and this gets me through the day.

However, these two factors alone do not give the whole picture.

There are also a couple of app's worth installing that will monitor your battery and CPU usage and will help you to make decisions regarding adjustments to your phone's set-up.

Darn, I was hoping you weren't going to say that. :p

Without getting too far OT I have both CPUSpy and Betterybattery Stats, but I'm not sure yet what constitutes as things that should be a concern. Like as an example, in BBS I see suspend and events/0 in solid red, and I'm not sure whether I should be doing something about that or if that's just how it's supposed to be? I don't suppose you can point me in the right direction to a thread explaining on how to interpret the readings of these such programs?

Back OT, I think I might give beta6 a shot and see how it goes then, cheers. :)

Beta6 is very good, even on its defaults. Download the Ultimate Kernel Cleaning Script from here and run it before flashing the new kernel and you shouldn't have any problems.

Fwiw, beta11 hasn't given any problems yet. Battery is at 84% after 10h 3m off-charge. No issues in ordinary use... I'll give it a stress test in a while and see if the stability holds up then.
