Siyah kernel - Dummies Guide

Yeah I've tried a few times to play with settings but as suggested, got sod etc.... Well check out you're link thank you :)
 
I have the i777 with AT&T. Is the new kernel good for that phone? I installed the wrong one once and almost never got over it. :) I'm still using 3.4.2 with stock ICS.

Can I install it with Odin Mobile or do I need to use CWM in recovery mode?

What all is involved in doing a dual boot?

3.4.2 worked fine and it was the one recommended to me, if not in this thread in another.

The new one disabled the right two buttons, guess I'm going back.

I guess that was the only part of my post that needed an answer.
 
I installed Siyah 5.0.1 earlier today and after the reboot a few of my apps are missing.

The logo for the app still appears on a homescreen, but not in the drawer. When I select the app I get a message saying 'app isn't installed'.

Anyone else had this issue?
 
Yesterday, I asked about Siyah kernel for JB leak on XDA. Here is the reply I got from Gokhanmoral himself:

I just installed Siyah kernel v 5.0.1 and mine did this too! Why are we losing RAM with a kernel flash?

I checked mine just before I switched, and I had 827mb, and now it is down to 782.

Do we know if this is just a visual problem, or we actually lost 45mb??

I had some time today and merged JB kernel with my modifications.
there were too many conflicts (because of my previous merges with s3 kernel) and I resolved them in 20-30 minutes.
I have sent the blindly compiled kernel to a friend and he said that it booted but the modem did not work.
so, everything is (almost) ready. I just need an s2 for several hours.
then some time to make dual-boot related changed (I need at least a day)
I have also put cm10.1 support but I think I will have to remove it because it moves your sdcard contents to a subfolder named 0. multiuser support will create different folders for different users and that will probably break dualboot support.
so, I will have to find another place to store dual-boot related files.

I just recently joined these forums. I have a SGSII and I have just recently flashed stock ICS. I wanted to root it and was referred by someone to Siyah as it's easy to install and once you get the hang of it, it is great to customize.
Just a few questions -
1. From reading this entire thread I can see that most of you'll have preferred Siyah v4.1.4 to v5.0.1. So according to you'll, for a noob like me, which version should I go for?
2. Once I install Siyah, I will mostly be flashing custom ROM's, so will I still have access to all the advanced tweaks and customisations Siyah provides?

Hello and welcome to Android Forums dkt8792! :)

I would, and do, recommend Siyah v5.0.1 in my step-by-step guide to rooting for beginners, "Rooting Galaxy S2 - Dummies Guide".

After installing the Siyah kernel you will have an app called STweaks, see post #1 of this thread, that allows you further configuration of the kernel.

That is correct. Just make sure that you read everything thoroughly and carefully before flashing any ROM's as research is 50% of the exercise.

Hey I've been reading up and am confused with the sheer number of ROM's out there. Between Resurrection ROM, NeatROM and MIUI which one would you suggest for a beginner?
Also is it possible to install JB ROM's directly through CWM or do I have to flash stock JB first?

I'm sorry I didn't completely understand how to go about it.
It's the normal procedure right?
Download and place it in my sd card. Do a complete nandroid backup and Titanium Backup of data and apps. Then factory reset, wipe cache and Dalvik cache. Then I apply update from zip. And also install gapps from zip if necessary. Is this correct?
P.S - Could you provide me with the link to download the latest Neat ROM for my ICS S2?

Full installation instructions for NEAT ROM are also included in the link I just mentioned. Both with No wipe and with Full wipe. You obviously read that I installed the stock JB firmware first?

I think you need to take a little time to carefully and thoroughly read through the posts I've given you. ;)
 
Here is another update from gokhanmoral, one which is SURE to lift your spirits as it did mine :)

- undervolting cpu/gpu
- overclocking cpu (by changing the highest step only)
- increasing charge current
- additional i/o schedulers (sio, v/r and row)
- some additional governors maybe
- CWM-flashable stweaks support as an init.d script so that you can use stweaks on some repacked kernels such as philz

some features are not possible to compile as modules, such as bln, but I doubt I can get it working on JB without breaking anything else in such a short time (I will have about an hour with an s2). gestures won't be available as a module neither..

so, the question is: since there are lots of positive reviews about the JB leak, what do expect from a custom kernel? undervolting cpu/gpu, overclocking? what else?

Tested only on i9100 jb leak LS6. Not tested on CM10, even if it boots some features (cam, for example) may be broken on cm10.
No dualboot support yet. I will have to update recovery to support that again, but I have no idea when I will have time for that.
Test it only if you are using Samsung
