Root So, now they say we will have to sbf to receive update

P3 tweeted that we will now have to be on froyo to receive update. Also that gingerbreak is not going to work. And not to take update if u want to stay rooted. Bummer

Honestly, not a big deal. Expected this, and probably in due time you won't need to be on froyo.

I'm sure they'll get it rooted as well. They always do.

Not to be a jinx, but .596 (OTA) probably won't be ALL that much better than .595 either. So no worries, but even if OTA is way better, root will come in due time and there will come easier ways to flash it.

so far every leak has had root within a couple days, I don't see too much problem (myself) other than I hate having ads on my device that I pay a ton of money for already.

ugh, screw it. i'll stay with this .595 until someone makes a gb rom with black notification bar and icons from stock gb
 
I saw this coming as well. Its happened in the past and not just with the DX. But with time it will be worked out. It is the main reason I never jump on something with such a risk. I enjoy root and the current roms are just fine until the next best thing comes along (ROOTED). :)
 
no big deal...was very surprised when it was first told to us that those on .595 would get the update anyway...

loving GB...might SBF and take the OTA...might not...right now im leaning towards just staying on the leaked GB and waiting for us to get a .zip to flash through clockwork

me too. I knew it was too good to be true. Motorola actually allow users like us to upgrade easily? pssshhhh.
 
Figures. It's raining where I live and now I see this. Coincidence? It's o"k, P3 and TBH are on it as we speak. They have to be, they gotta feed us GB/root/deodex junkies.

I was rooted but when i upgraded to .595 i chose the stock version so i could get the .596 ota, but i guess thats not happening now.

Well just flasht he rooted deodexed... pretty easy right? Im sure the official 596 or whatever it chooses to finally name itself, will be rooted within a few days (hours ?) max.
 
I don't understand what the big deal is with accepting an OTA update. The dev-distributed updates are EXACTLY THE SAME.

I think people are under the impression that the OTA does something special that something like, say, TBH's release of a pre-rooted version doesn't. Same thing happened with FroYo. People were so quick to jump back to the stock Eclair and accept the OTA, when it was way easier to install the dev-released update instead of putting your phone back in its stock condition.

Nothing special happens to your phone during the OTA. It's an upgrade script. TBH takes the same upgrade script, applies whatever rooting magic they need to apply, and runs it.

If you've gotten as far as installing a leaked, beta OS, you're way outside the realm of OTA updates. P3 had some information that turned out to be wrong - but who cares? You'll just install the OTA through one of the dev's release packages and be happy.

Just my two cents. It's worth exactly that.
 
Aaaggghhh. Had to go back to Uncle Froyo. Tether (the app) on GB kept dropping after 5-6 minutes. I'll root it so I can freeze a couple apps then "wait patiently" for the update.
 
This is exactly why I don't want any of the OTA updates. The improvements from the newest leak will probably be minimal and there is always a chance that gaining root access will be difficult or not at all possible.

From a support perspective, it makes no sense whatsoever to support ANYTHING but stock-to-stock upgrades.

You guys realize the level of validation and testing - all, mind you, documented, controlled and procedural - that this software goes through? Why would they want to double their efforts by validating an upgrade from a LEAKED version? Not to mention those people installing the leaked version are most likely to have modified their systems - again adding complications to the upgrade.

It's not a deliberate dig at the community. It's just absurd for them to try to test upgrade processes again and again over various system permutations and especially not targeted at the group of users who are most likely to have unknown modifications.
