Root System update

Sorry it took so long, but I've yanked the piggy (kernel) out of my ROM. It's all gzipped, and I don't know what else to do with it from here... hopefully it helps some people to figure out what's so quirky with the other kernels on this update. If you need the full boot.img just let me know.

Also, if you have the time, I'd like to learn what else could have been done to make this easier for you (developers) to extract what you need.

I continue to wonder, is the new radio an improvement?
I think it depends on where you are. Some people have said they didn't notice any improvement, one has said he can get reception inside his house where he hasn't before, but nobody has said it makes thing worse so I would recommend going with it to stay current if nothing else. You can always go back to older firmware by using the joe_blow zip if you think it is worse than what you have now.

Anyone have a clue what this "Self Service" app does and if it's safe to remove?

The benefits to this new radio are twofold:
1) You feel like a boss for being bleeding edge.
2) For me, there is better reception in my house. SMS/MMS are much faster on my end. I got a MMS that someone sent me about a week and a half ago that never properly downloaded. After running this update, the message popped through and downloaded almost immediately. Pretty nice, I thought, even if it was just a picture of me holding a core from a tree trunk.

Additionally, you will feel like a boss for being bleeding edge.

I have been going to an auction for years now. It is in a giant metal building and I could never get reception inside... maybe 1/10 tries I could get something back on 1x if I stood around waiting on it. The kicker is there is a tower within sight about a mile away, just outside the door I get full bars and perfect connections.

Tonight at the same place I had absolutely no problems getting connections for 3G. It only dropped to 1x one time, when previously it would always do it inside, and even with no bars showing 3G would return stuff I was looking up almost immediately.

That is a worst-case scenario though... many people may not even see a difference. To me it seems that there is a change in the radio to improve upon data throughput in poor signal areas.

I couldn't resist. I RUUed then took the Nov OTA, and then took this latest March OTA. I'm gonna stay stock and play around with it for a little while to see how things are. So far so good, I feel updated seeing the 2.95.652.5 in my phone info. xD

If you're not running one of the stockish roms, you might not see that number. It should be under Software number in "About Phone", and also if you click on "More"

If you took the March OTA, your baseband version should be 109.00.0108 and PRI should be 1.56_44:)

When you have the ringtone volume on even just a little does the Virgin Splash screen stay real loud during startup. Before the update it would play the splash to the volume I had set prior to restarting? This is bugging me because it's loud all the time when I restart unless I put the phone on silet or vibrate only before restarting.

Change your boot animation....

It's always been loud. I hate that VM boot screen.

Easy way to get rid of it is to just flash another rom and get a cooler boot sequence. :P

That damn splash screen was was THE reason I initially rooted. Even with the hassle this phone was, it was so worth it. Virgin engineers must have sat around for hours discussing "How can we possibly make a boot animation even more annoying than the Triumph's?"

Let me look real quick, I know ive seen posts about it. Will edit this comment in a bit

Edit:
Yeah, I know you hate it too!.

Sound removal for rooted and stock...

To remove sound, there is an app in the app store that can silence it, called boot sound remover or something like that. It may or may not work. it did on the Optimus V.

For rooted users
You need a rooted file maanger.
Go to system/customize/resource

For boot animation, delete SPC_bootanimation.zip
For sound, delete BoltAnimations.mp3

I think changing the boot animation is easier than setting up.a new Rom...just my $0.02

Yes but it's fun to set up from scratch once in a while. Plus why would anyone keep the stock rom and all of it's bloats and quirks after spending some minutes (for some hours) to root and S-off?

Because now with root you can remove bloat and quirks....and add your own tweaks and kernel preferences and such (boot ani, splash screens, themes, skins).....the beauty of android is there is a flavor for everyone....honestly though I have yet to find a Rom that really works better than stock....yes its fun to change, but its best to be home
