The HTC EVO 4G off-topic Banter thread

Got my evo a few days ago from Google I/O. Love it so far, its a tad glitchy though, 30 days for unlimited service :D.

The reaction time is great, very similar to the incredible's thanks to the processor.

The camera let me down a little though, 8 mp of a semi-grainy anything.

3G: Fastest down speed is 2.25 mbps for me, up is .25 mbps.

4G: Fastest down speed is 2.42 mbps, up is .45 mbps.

Android OS, you gotta love it.

One thing I did notice though was that some processes seem to start themselves on occasion, sprint tv, sprint zone, clock, navigation(according to Advanced Task Killer).

Ping, can you take a photo of something using yours and post it here? I took a flick of the box above with the evo. @ Briver, it glitches on me sometimes when viewing images in my gallery, an exclamation point is shown in place of each image, and sometimes my music library, only about 30 songs right now, runs into freezing issues.

I took it to a tmobile store to look for a case for it, thinking an hd2 case would fit, but they didn't. The reps there were in awe.

I think there's a minimum distance you have to be for focus to work correctly. And make sure you tap the screen to focus on the correct area.

See attached picture. Had to resize it cause it was bigger than the forum's max size.

The problem is the lens on these phones are VERY small so they can not absorb much light so you are left with a lot of "noise." They slightly compensate for this by usually having a longer exposure time than a regular camera but that makes getting a blurry photo a large possibility if your subject is moving or you are not holding the camera perfectly still.

Basically they have to make the lens and censor bigger because there really is no magical way to capture more light. However this would lead to a bigger and thicker phone.

I hate people bragging about this as an 8MP phone like it is a DSLR because a 5MP point and shoot would destroy it any day. That said it's a pretty damn good camera phone and it will be a huge improvement from my iPhone 2G, so I'm happy.

Thanks. In general, it seems that next to battery life, camera quality is the next biggest issue that faces phones in general. Much rather them tackle the battery issue first.

SCB, thanks for posting those videos. I noticed when you zoomed in on the steering wheel and panned right it was choppy, but when you were pointing out the windshield and panning left it wasn't...seems like its best at ranges beyond a few feet.

Got it, how is it working for you as a hotspot? Are you running into gallery issues at all?

Tried hotspot for about 10 seconds. It worked no problem.

Gallery only has 8 pictures, but that also has no problems. The problem is... the Gallery is not 3D and has no Picasa integration. ARRGGGHH

EVO 4G vs. Touch Pro 2

My friend is contemplating switching to my plan come June and picking up the EVO and selling his Touch Pro 2 but he doesn't know if he wants to part with it. The main use for his phone seems to be music, and internet use.

I have 26 photos on my Evo, running into issues already. Have you done a speedtest yet?

HTC Evo with Spring 3G: Down 1003, Up 723, Latency 127
Motorola Droid with Verizon 3G: Down 901, Up 512, Latency 115
Tested from Berkeley, CA, using the Speedtest.net app in the market. Measurements in kbps

Edit: Test in Irvine, CA
Evo: 77.7 kB/s down, 64.3 kB/s up, 112ms ping
Droid: 80.4 kB/s down, 75.1 kB/s up, 88ms ping

I am assuming you were not a Hero owner. That is standard behavior with the Hero

the problem is the memory card... had that issue on my hero until i upgraded the memory cards class

So its the 8gb microsd that came with? I tried formatting and saw the issue still, also saw an evo a district rep had, he was running into similar issue. What the hay?

Sprint includes a class 2 SD card. they are ridiculously slow. Get a class 4 or 6 card and you will notice less lag.
