The (maybe) "Epic" Motorola X Pre-Release Thread

I am leaning toward the maxx but I want to wait to see what's going on with the bootloader. I would be fine if there was a root exploit for it but having an unlocked bootloader would make life that much easier.

I think it will come locked like they always have. However Motorola's unlock tool has a history of working on the GSM versions of their modern razrs, which gives me hope.

The old Motorola ceo promised it years ago and held out until retirement.

They may play carrier games but at some point, the mother ship ought to insist that Motorola just stop with the bootloader chicken dance. Seriously.
I do wonder how a game of bootloader chicken would turn out between Verizon and Google, assuming Google actually fights. Verizon has a lot of money tied up in the DROID trademark license that mostly gets used on Motorola devices except for a few HTC and a single older Samsung device. If it does happen, I'll bring the popcorn.

Phandroid reported today that Verizon and ATT customers not take the latest SGS4 update due to root and bootloader lock-out, so, game of chicken is a good description! :(

Yeah, I've been busy in the S4 forums because Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon have all released updates these past 3 days bringing the apps2sd feature back, but verizon and at&t have really locked down their devices. I stickied PSAs in both their root forums as a warning, I hope they helped someone avoid the lockdown.

It kind of already happened with the block c fight
Google pushed up the price to trigger an open device policy. VZ has responded by arguing any device that uses their other spectrum as well must meet their rules. Google would have to release a block c only nexus device to really force the issue. Truth is Google lost because the TelCos own the FCC. The lobbyist and FCC is a revolving door and AT&T specifically does a lot of astroturfing to limit public networks(just google Wiscnet and AT&T for an example) and other tools that would help the issue.

@black_man_x Buddy brought me a new moto.. Interesting to use one of these. I kind of ignore the build quality but it is nice

@black_man_x Just so I don't have to do the answer everyone thing... Its a droid

^ bmx had a great reputation as a credible source until the Thunderbolt release, and comments here on our forums against him. Up until then, he was an active poster.

Despite the hate, mods supported him - me especially.

I found him a credible source who was overcome by Verizon flip-flopping back then. And he was called out for it.

Those of you who survived the epic GNex thread know exactly what I'm talking about because Steven's deep source was giving us info and then we'd see the Verizon change-ups.

Now that everyone has seen that at play with the GNex, I hope that someday bmx will join us here again and be met with patience and trust.

I'll eat my hat if wrong, but I still think he's a straight shooter who may know things that we want to know too.

:)

Good lord, the Gnex release... At one point I could swear Verizon was flip-flopping just to cause agony.

Still not sure how I feel about these new Droid's and the X phone. Would love to come back to Motorola but unless the bootloader is unlockable, dunno if I will bite. I have an S4 at the moment and its nice, but I have a soft spot for anything Moto.

I am tired of the same old Razr type design though with the kevlar and all. Unless it has some special sauce, I may pass and see what they do next year. I have had way to many devices in less than a year and now money is tight. Anybody here hiring? :D

EDIT: P.S. Hey EarlyMon!

You list your carrier as T-Mobile. If they make gsm versions of these phones like they did with the razr hd, and razr m(i), they will come locked and will be unlockable. The Verizon versions will be locked down tight just like most in the past have been, though they may sell developer editions.

It will take nerve to actually advertise 48 hour battery life, but I read it right there on the storyboard.

Assuming that is the Maxx, this really excites me for the Ultra. If I can get a slimmer profile Ultra and get old Razr Maxx HD battery out of it then I am in.

I really just hope they go all in with processor, 1080, and camera. If so, Moto here I come.

Leaked road map for Verizon lists the Moto X at August 23rd. And the HTC One for August 1st.

I need to fix that. I never get around to updating it much. :o

Thanks for the heads up!

Wow, this is my first time following a phone prior to its release, but if release is supposed to be in about 1 month, I'd figure they (Motorola) would be announcing it by now to build a more widespread public hype.
Even the supposed/rumored July 11 (ie inviting Guy K. for a private press conference) announcement was put to rest by Motorola themselves. As a newbie follower, I interpret all this dodging activity by Moto (or parent Google?) as either they are paranoid X is not going compete well, or X is just plain out not ready :(
I need a new phone already! Haha

Some of us here were part of the Gnex release thread. We know not to get our hopes about release dates and that anything can change everyday.

Why didn't they name these new phones...Moto X, Moto X Ultra, Moto X Ultra Maxx, Moto X Ultra Mini?

Well, they're spending $500 million in marketing, or rather soon will be, and may not be putting anything out until it's really there.

:dontknow:

When it comes to prereleases, most anything is possible.

More when you add in Verizon. Both the Thunderbolt and the GNex were exercises in downright other.

For the GNex, we saw it exposed on things like the Today show, and buzzed like crazy. Then the UK got it. Then Canada. Weeks later, after the excitement died down and a lot of people turned off, it came out on Verizon - and that was their fault.

All we can do as the dates get closer is put our trays in the upright position and fasten our safety belts for a landing.

Until then, you can see why we care not just about leaks but the credibility of those involved. :o
