The (maybe) "Epic" Motorola X Pre-Release Thread

I really hope this phone is something special but so far it seems like a mid range phone. I hope that Motorola and Google are pulling a prank on us all. Moto needs to come back to be a player at this point and with lackluster specs I am not sure this will do it. I mean custom colors? Meh? Anyone can throw a cheap case on a phone for custom colors right? :p

Sup peeps, its been awhile.

I've been throwing in the Ultra and Maxx news here. Really no where else to put it. I just read that article before I came here. That would be impressive.

Hmm, this may be the first Moto I'll be seriously considering since the original Razr.

I'm wanting me some battery life like no other. Last 2 phones = Dinc and Gnex. Seriously folks not kidding here, need flippin battery life!! And Moto delivers.

I've decided that if the VZW HTC One has some sort of super locked bootloader and the Moto X doesn't, I'll get the Moto X. I mean, it's a step up from my GNex, and my favorite thing about my GNex is the ability to do whatever I want to it. It's nearly impossible to brick, unless you know what you're doing and you intentionally brick it or a hardware problem that bricks it.

Others have been winning with a specs war.

What happened with PCs?

Unless you have special needs, you can get phenomenonal power for cheep.

Or still pay more and get better.

What's the big driver in the demand curve? Price.

Looking to me like Motorola has stepped right up to the plate on price.

On a phone that however narrowly is besting last year's models in some areas.

A few months ago I thought that I wanted the Moto X to take the game up a notch on the specs.

I'm now seeing that the game just got real.

Agreed. My wife's S3 is very smooth with Cyanogen. I have no intention of playing games on the phone other then Angry Birds on my "special office chair".

I do need a camera good enough to replace a point and shoot for the few pictures I take a year. I have an ok mirrorless camera for vacations. Give me battery life and my wireless charging to go along with Google's update schedule and I'm sold for the prices they are rumoring.

HTC devices always come with a super locked bootloader these days, however they've got a dev tool that unlocks it and registers it as unlocked so you can't claim your warranty. However, Verizon has showed in the past that they demand that HTC not allow their dev tool to work with their branded phones.

Almost any new phone will be better than those due to the new and efficient processors. My Nexus 4 had the same battery capacity as my Gnex, and I easily get twice the average screen time. I can only imagine how well a rumored 3500mAh battery will be in these processors.

People have done a good job of finding hackable exploits on recent devices. The One has 2 S-Off methods now, and I unlocked mine last week without going anywhere near HTCDev. :)

Of course there's no guarantee that such things will work with a VZW handset, though IIRC last year's S-Off for S4-based HTCs included the DNA.

Yeah when I had the Droid Razr Maxx HD battery life was awesome. These devices look to be even better, which is great I must say! Hope that they have lessened blur a bit. My HD Maxx had lag on stock, which sucked. Had data issues on each rom that I ran, so had to stay on stock lol. Also wifi problems after the update to jelly bean.

Would be awesome if they ran stock android but eh.

Yeah, I do remember hearing that it got S-Off. I also remember the dev tool being blocked on it after an OTA that came out on release. I didn't follow it too closely, though I'm sure Night Angel or Antimony could probably tell the whole story since they have the device.

Ah the good old days of hacking HTC's. Good to hear there's still work being done. I was worried with HTCDev, exploit efforts might get abandoned. As usual, probably better odds on a flagship phone I suppose.

I was reading that there's another S-Off method that hasn't been made public so it won't get patched before VZW's release.

Okay I'm officially looking for my next phone. My Gnex is not in distress so I am not in the same boat as I was when I was coming from my Dinc to my Gnex.

Here is my question, is this phone going to be a mid-range phone or will it be a flagship device for Moto with all of the highest end technology?

The Moto X will not be flag ship. It will be midrange with innovation. The Ultra should be flagship if that is what you want.

Rumors are saying a 720p screen where the latest high end phones from HTC and Sammy are 1080p.

Also saying that it uses the S4 Pro dual core processor rather than a quad core as found on several others. The S4 appeared in many phones last year, the S4 Pro sports a better gpu.

Those alone prevent it from being classed with the latest high end technology.

However - both 1080p and a quad core mean less battery life in general.

It's also said to sport 2 GB ram, that's the current high end ram spec and that they've done something with the camera sensor, but whether that's just changes or improvements will have to be seen.

It's likely to be quite good.

A year ago this would have out-spec'd the HTC One X or the SGS3, two example high end phones of 2012.

There's an expectation for a higher end Moto to hit later this year. What that really means is anyone's guess so far as I know.

PS - hey Trooper! :)

The Moto X Phone will not be a "Flagship" phone in the sense that it has the latest specs.

Anonymous Twitter account @evleaks, rumours that Moto X Phone will feature 5-inches of 720p display, 1.7GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB internal storage, 10MP primary camera and 2MP secondary camera.

The philisophy behind this phone is not to be the game changer phone with specs, but to change the game in regards to user experinence and affordabilty.

Motorola is taking a chance here, and it

It will take nerve to actually advertise 48 hour battery life, but I read it right there on the storyboard.

So, look like the Droid Ultra is coming out 8/8/13. Still no word on release date of the Moto X. Why do they tease me so?

If they make a GSM version of that with the battery life advertised and an unlockable bootloader, it might be one of the few things that could get me away from a nexus. And I never thought I'd say that.
