I actually find that to be a little weird. Droid Life posted videos back when the new droids were announced, they dogged in for having a 720p screen and they were sure why they did that.
Now they say you don't need anything over 720p on a screen for the X. Why the 180? I agree you probably don't need anything over that but why change completely and hate on the droids when they are essentially the same thing?
Because the blogosphere runs with what they think they know first.
Got a buddy, IOWA, with an LTEvo, SGS3, SGS4 and better eyes than mine.
Comparing the two Pentile phones, the Sammies - big difference on the displayed resolution.
I had him compare the LTEvo to the SGS4 - the SGS4 had the vivid color he liked common to AMOLED - but was surprised. Hardly any noticeable difference on the actual visible resolution.
Why?
Because the LTEvo is 720p using RGB display technology.
That's 50% more subpixels than an SGS3 and even more subpixels than the SGS4.
PenTile is a trick - a really great trick, but a trick - that takes fewer subpixels in a way that your eye-brain sees more resolution.
RGB is more expensive and harder to do with AMOLED and employs no tricks. The X is the first to do it above 800x480.
It's what all color display technology has been based on, beginning with color television.
The difference between the LTEvo and the SGS3, both 4.7" 720p displays is obvious even with my eyes.
The flip-flop on how many dots you can see is the result of reviewers not understanding what PenTile is, how it works, and how it relates and compares to RGB.
If I look at half of the specs for the LTEvo and SGS3, I would think that they are both the same resolution.
If I look at the subpixel specs or use my eyes, I know that they are not the same resolution.
Not all 720p phones are the same.
The X is True 720p, not PenTile 720p or PenTile 1080p.
Big difference whenever you get into true HD displays.
Every time.
Hope this clarifies it.
