The (maybe) "Epic" Motorola X Pre-Release Thread

I actually find that to be a little weird. Droid Life posted videos back when the new droids were announced, they dogged in for having a 720p screen and they were sure why they did that.

Now they say you don't need anything over 720p on a screen for the X. Why the 180? I agree you probably don't need anything over that but why change completely and hate on the droids when they are essentially the same thing?

Agreed, definitely inconsistent to say the least.

I think the difference is that with the Droids they were reviewing specs. With the X they sat and played with it for a day, learned about it, and used it, before they were able to open their yaps.

It seems they are actually reviewing the device itself instead of panning the specs.

Perhaps, or it could be that since they and everyone else in the blogosphere spent the last half year drooling over this phone that they had to find some way to justify all of the puddles.

Yep, I'll probably wait for the developer edition to come out on Verizon. Even if I don't unlock it and Rom it, I know the option will be there. I ran stock on my GNex (rooted and unlocked) until Saturday.

Radiator Springs Races taken with Moto X. Recorded in both light and dark.

Here it is through Google Glass

Because the blogosphere runs with what they think they know first.

Got a buddy, IOWA, with an LTEvo, SGS3, SGS4 and better eyes than mine.

Comparing the two Pentile phones, the Sammies - big difference on the displayed resolution.

I had him compare the LTEvo to the SGS4 - the SGS4 had the vivid color he liked common to AMOLED - but was surprised. Hardly any noticeable difference on the actual visible resolution.

Why?

Because the LTEvo is 720p using RGB display technology.

That's 50% more subpixels than an SGS3 and even more subpixels than the SGS4.

PenTile is a trick - a really great trick, but a trick - that takes fewer subpixels in a way that your eye-brain sees more resolution.

RGB is more expensive and harder to do with AMOLED and employs no tricks. The X is the first to do it above 800x480.

It's what all color display technology has been based on, beginning with color television.

The difference between the LTEvo and the SGS3, both 4.7" 720p displays is obvious even with my eyes.

The flip-flop on how many dots you can see is the result of reviewers not understanding what PenTile is, how it works, and how it relates and compares to RGB.

If I look at half of the specs for the LTEvo and SGS3, I would think that they are both the same resolution.

If I look at the subpixel specs or use my eyes, I know that they are not the same resolution.

Not all 720p phones are the same.

The X is True 720p, not PenTile 720p or PenTile 1080p.

Big difference whenever you get into true HD displays.

Every time.

Hope this clarifies it.

Well arent the new droids not pentile as well? I agree it makes a difference, I just love they posted a hands on video with the droids and dinged it for 720p regardless, then immediately fell in love with the display on the X.

Its been a while since I've posted, around two years or so. I've had an iphone 4s for the last two years. I'm feeling like coming back to Android and was looking at the Moto X or HTC One.. I'll be eligible at the end of this month. Any suggestions? I really like the size of the X. My last Android phone was the HTC Incredible..

Correct, and that's my point about the blogosphere.

They'll say what they think they know.

Some people can't see once their minds are made up.

They look but they cannot see.

They're looking at superior display family, they're looking at a superior processor giving outstanding results and all that they can see is how to fit in a report before others that showcases opinion over facts to get advertising revenue on the page visits.

While I don't dispute they had these phones in their hands, eyes open and pointed at the phones -

Have they actually seen them?

I say not, I say they're only seeing the noise in their brains and listening to the voices in their heads.

Per usual.

Welcome back to AF Willtrvl.:)

Sounds like you can't go wrong with either one.:thumb:

Welcome back, Willtrvl! Great to have you here again :)

I'm still leaning toward the X. When comparing the two, keep in mind it's the same size screen but the X has a smaller form factor. The One has stereo speakers up front, but the X is apparently louder (I use a BT headset anyway).

The only way you'll really know is the same way we'll really know: go to the store and play. Price and specs aside, I'm still leaning towards the X even though other phones look incredibly attractive to me.

The X is louder than the One?

I'm behind on some of the videos here...

yea stuffs coming in pretty fast :p

It might be worth updating the first post to include the confirmed specs and maybe a couple of the reviews etc. Just so people coming here for the first time dont have to sift through 55 pages of info.

Sigh. It really is the the lack of wireless charging for me, though it sounds like the camera could be a bit better. I can't bring myself to pay more then I wanted for less then I wanted. Here's hoping the bring out a "Maxx" version with bigger battery and wireless since this is the "Ultra" version.

Good idea.

Better to make a proper specs thread.

Will get to both in a bit.

Well word is that this is the first release in a new "family" of phones, there will be higher end X phones, and lower priced X phones. I don't recall where I read it but Woodside also was quoted in the last couple days saying there is still a lot of work to be done.

So just hang tight if you're in no rush.

Or take advantage of the awesome deals all the carriers are offering now allowing you to upgrade anytime.

I am STILL on the fence.

Pretty different tune between Engadget and the Verge on battery life. Engadget seemed very happy with it while The Verge quoted 15 hours (their use) battery life. Interested to see some more tests done on that front.

15 hours is still really good. Some might use it more. Phone arena quoted 8 hours, starting to think some dont even review it.

maybe they were gaming or running benchmarks the whole 8 hours

also i wonder if they were at the limits of the radio range which might have affected the battery life... to many variables between these articles. probably best to wait for AnandTech to come out with a real review before forming any definite opinions, I don't put a lot of faith in all these pop up tech blogs.

Also I would love it if these tech blogs would actually put a real camera test on rather then just comparing phone cams to other smartphones, I mean thats fine and all but they should really be using a good DSLR to benchmark them so we have a stable point to compare from.

From Engadget -

"It's sad, but I am that person at dinner or drinks who's always staring at his phone. And that sort of behavior nets you a 28 percent charge on the Moto X after one day, two hours, 12 minutes and three seconds without battery saver enabled. That result bests even Motorola's own conservative claim of 24-hour battery life. Under the strain of Engadget's formal battery rundown protocol, in which an HD video plays on a loop, the Moto X's 2,200mAh cell lasted 11 hours and 15 minutes. Clap your hands, people. This is the battery life you didn't know you were missing."

Engadget's prediction on my LTEvo, especially for screen-on time, was very close to my experience. I'm inclined to trust them again in this case.
