The (maybe) "Epic" Motorola X Pre-Release Thread

The One camera now isn't what it was during prerelease reviews.

Fair review for me would be with a proper app like Camera JB+.

If it's software, no big deal. But if it's not right with a proper camera app, that's another story.

I was kind of hoping Moto would improve that, the camera has always been by far the weakest part of Motorola's phones. My wife's RAZR M is really bad.

Yeah, even my S3 is considerably better than the Gnex's camera. Only problem is, since I'm on an AOSP ROM, I don't get Samsung's optimization which is why their GPE phone (along with the One's), isn't as good either. As much as I want stock, I feel like HTC and Samsung are really doing some great things for their camera software while Google just wants it to be as simple and basic without any optimization.

Ugh.

Just read more about the G2. And the more I read, the more I love it. 5.2" 1080p screen, microSD slot, Snapdragon 800, 3GB RAM, etc. What a dream machine.

So will I buy the Moto X for the novelty of using it hands-free? Or go with the higher-spec'd device that's more of the same that I have right now?

Ugh.

Flip a coin and go with it :)

Really dissappointed to hear the Moto X camera is just as bad as Motorola's have always been. I read up on the "Clear Pixel" technology last night and was hopeful that would allow for better pictures...sadly Moto just doesn't know how to make a good camera. My OG Droid was awful. Like others have said as well...the stock Android camera does NOTHING to help either.

This complicates matters.

How much bigger is the G2 body than the Galaxy Nexus? Have actual dimensions been revealed? I feel like the Galaxy Nexus is perfect size for me - not sure how much bigger I'd be willing to go.

PS: That's what she said.

Where are you reading about it?

LG G2 manual leak reveals rear buttons, nano-SIM, microSD slot | Android Central

Between that and the info we already know ahead of Wednesday's big reveal, it's all going to come down to what do we want our phones to DO for us. That hands-free thing is still very attractive to me, as is the Moto Connect so I can check and respond to texts and emails straight from my computer without ever pulling the Moto X out.

But MAN, the G2! It's going to be a knock-down, drag out when these two devices go head to head. It'll come down to sheer functionality for me.

Yea I keep hearing about it too. I have a buddy that has the Nexus and says the call quality is very good (that's paramount for me, a phone that actually works really good as a phone - crazy I know) that's why I have always loved Moto, great PHONES. I have never had an LG and the thing is gonna be huge, not a fan of that. I don't know. I am torn.

I do want quality build and phone, and enough power that I won't be behind the times in 6 months.

this year kinda sucks, no really "great" phones in the size range I am looking for. X is the closest I guess. Just need to see what "the word on the street" is after people actually get to use them.

Sad part is my HD is dying, which I don't hold against Moto near as much as I hold it against ATT.

:( <--- Sad camper.

Wow, I was hoping this was one thing that would be improved. Having a 3 and 4 year old, having a decent camera for times I don't have my real camera with me is big.

I'm trying to like this phone but it's hard to ignore the phones already out and the ones coming.

disappointing to hear negative reviews on the camera. I'm wondering if software might help it out.

Yea same here... I think that was the last straw for me. I might look into something like the HTC One since I like what they are doing with the large pixel tech and it actually seems to work.

its really sad when a 3-4 year old phone (Nokia N8/N9) has a better camera then many of todays high end smartphones. I'v been looking for something that could at least come close to the N8 for ages in a decent small-mid size, mid-high spec phone.

I'm sold on the Moto X CPU, GPU, and contextual processor cores. I'm sold on their computing architecture as a way to save battery. Sold on the screen, RAM, even the 16GB storage is fine with me. The camera just might be a deal-breaker. I don't know yet. For me...It's not a HUGE deal, but if I'm not confident in it, I won't buy it for my wife because I don't want to hear constant complaints about the camera. :p

Anyone else notice that anyone that has used an X raves about it and us forum / blog junkies are often panning it. I think EM posted earlier that this may be a device you need to try out to get a real feel for.

The camera is going to be ehhhh at best! A lot of reviewers are saying its just ok but not on par with the ONE or S4, which means we'll be getting a newer phone with a camera that isn't as good as the phones that were released roughly 6 months ago.

To me it won't be a total deal breaker unless the camera is just god awful because I always have an iphone on me as well.

You know this year seems to have flied by. In retrospect anyway.

I bring this up because I am wondering ...

IS IT END OF AUGUST OR EARLY SEPTEMBER YET???

I really want to play with this phone. I am experiencing flip flops worse than I can remember with any phone prior.

I was set on the Atrix before it hit, then I was just waiting for a worthy successor, ended up with the HD because I wanted basically the Atrix with LTE ... I just want someone to make it an easy decision for me.

And WHY oh WHY are they making the customizations exclusive to ATT? I am trying to escape the death star!

I actually find that to be a little weird. Droid Life posted videos back when the new droids were announced, they dogged in for having a 720p screen and they were sure why they did that.

Now they say you don't need anything over 720p on a screen for the X. Why the 180? I agree you probably don't need anything over that but why change completely and hate on the droids when they are essentially the same thing?
