Mods The root club [Root only]

If she wasn't such a light sleeper I would have already.

Unfortunately it would be pretty hard to do without her noticing it since unlocking the bootloader would wipe it, which she would notice. I've always said "better to ask forgiveness then permission" though.

I think you can fastboot boot recovery and nandroid her setup, then save all photos and nandroid to the computer, unlock, flash recovery, root, transfer files back to phone, nandroid back, then reroot if need be. She'd never know! ;)

BTW, please ask Scary Alien if this is possible. I am freestyling but I think it is possible.

Yeah, unfortunately, you gotta be unlocked for the really useful fastboot commands to work (like flash or boot).

I know your'e speaking of an N4, but with the GNex, it's actually possible to unlock the bootloader in a couple of ways without losing your data (there's a newer method than the old mempodroid method whose exploit was patched in recent kernel version updates).

Still really wish VZW had the N4 so I could mess with it--I'm a Nexus device guy now--not sure if I'll get another non-Nexus phone :).

That's my exact opinion. Non-Nexus devices are difficult to deal with in comparison, and are much more brick proof than other devices. Other devices might be relativly easy, but still more difficult if only by a little. Verizon's inablity to get another nexus will probably result in me dumping them when my contract is up.

+1 ;) :).

After this December, I should be down to only two lines on VZW (both my son and wife are with other carriers now).

I don't really fault VZW for not keeping their doors (devices) as open as other's do since they feel that business model seems to work, but my wallet will do my voting :).

What's really funny is that I don't do any wi-fi tethering (only ever briefly ever tested this a few times) and most of the time I have and use a wi-fi connection vs. taxing their 3G network (I also keep my 4G Nexus on 3G most of the time since that seems to help with my battery life). So, my rooting behavior has no real impact on them whatsoever :p.

Yeah, I won't ever get another non Nexus phone either. Didn't take me long to miss my Nexus S after getting a GS2.

I almost bricked my wifes phone rooting it :D I thought I had completely screwed up but it is sorta well now. She has an Optimus S I think her next phone will be either my EVO LTE or (shudder to think it) an Iphone. My next phone will be a nexus

You got me. As I said, I just did it yesterday, and I'm really just catching in to all the lingo.
But I followed the directions in the thread on rooting in the sticky section. So, whatever recovery is there, that's the one I have.

So far have rooted my mate's Desire Z... it was pretty easy, once we realized that we had to downgrade to an earlier version... should have seen it, as it was in the instructions!

Think the wife's phone will have to wait until tomorrow!! :)

So apparently I am a rooted user... My recently new ex boyfriend stole my phone for almost a day. When it was returned I assumed he had put spyware or something on it. I was researching root for my HTC wildfire and had discovered one of the benefits is having hotspot access, which was one of the first things I noticed that was obviously different and unexplained. Can someone please give me some advice on how to end his access to my phone please?

Do a factory data reset, and make sure that you install only apps that you want and need. Change your passwords if you think they've been compromised.

If you want to change your gmail password, do that first, before clearing out your phone with a factory data reset.

I would IMMEDIATELY do a factory reset. That will eliminate any apps that he could have installed that needed root access that can spy on you. While having root access can be incredibly useful, it can also be really bad if someone has installed things on your phone without your knowledge.

Captivate has been rooted since Christmas Day two years ago. Rooted my Galaxy S 3 the day I got it and just now rooted my Nexus 10 and sister's LG Thrive.

Word on the wire today (twitter) one of the devs, @liquid0624 has had his motherboard fry, so he is not going to be developing for a while.

Bummer!

Congrats!

Backup before you flash a new rom, though!
Oh yeah! This Samsung is a little different than my HTC Evo. Especially the rooting of it. I think the Samsung was alot easier tho!
Got alot more questions about tho, and will post over in the SGIII forums!

That dev you mentioned, what phone does he develop for? And what roms does he have?

You betcha! I read until my eyes bled, and rooted it!
No issues so far! Wanna buy my Evo? Fully rooted s-off. Perhaps I will post it in the Classifieds!

The Note 2 seemed to me a little big to operate with one hand imo. But it did look sweet:)

I am running liquid smooth RC7 on my AT&T SIII, I think it is up to RC9 (RC = release candidate). I am not sure what other phones he has. I think the Nexus 4 and perhaps Galaxy Nexus.
