Okay. Yes I used this thread to get help rooting my phone as well. I can't tell you how many different rooting methods I tried. None worked. Turned out I had the updated Bo7 stock and that's why I couldn't root. So once I downloaded a zip file someone referred me to and got back to the Bo4 stock, I then used the kingo app and connected my phone to the computer and literally clicked one button and my phone was rooted. It really is that simple. Amd I, like you, just wanted to be able to enable the wifi hotspot thing that my carrier seemed to block on my phone. I had to download a third party app to get the hotspot to work though but it's okay now. I got what I wanted. My hotspot. 
btw just for an extra thing. I don't know if you'll run into the same problem I did but my wifi and 3G were acting up after root. I got it fixed now though. Just let me know if the same thing happens with you. And if you find that you still can't get the tethering thing to work, just ask me for the app I use. good luck!
