Root Universal Eris Root for Dummies!

teleburst,

If you can't get this to work after one more try, then use the one-click app:

http://androidforums.com/all-things...is-app-apk-no-pcs-no-scripts-needed-easy.html

The instructions there are not as verbose as in this thread, but there are fewer steps to be performed by the end user (and thereby fewer places for a mistake to creep in).

Make sure to follow the instructions about backing up your current ROM using Nandroid (3rd or 4th post in this thread) as the first thing you do after getting Amon_RA up and running. (That app installs the same recovery boot as this method).

Good Luck

Simply put, you are not following the instructions. If you just "click" on a .zip file, you will see a "preview" of what is in the .zip file, just the same way that a "preview" will occur if you browse a .zip file in Windows with Windows Explorer.

You see a preview, but they are not unpacked.

No where did I say to "just click" the .zip file in the instructions, except for when the "gscript.zip" file is in the "cut sash".

Look; you can verify whether or not you have unpacked your files correctly by using ES File manager to just browse around. If you unpacked them correctly, you will see four files, just like it is explained in the 2nd post in this thread. Two of them (the scripts) will be in /sdcard/gscript, and two will be in the /sdcard/gscript/tools folder.

Yes, I assumed that it would just be a preview.

I have done it exactly as your instructions have said about 6 different times now on two different cards. When I checked for the files after unpacking, there were all there, just like you say. that's why the last time, I thought I'd take a peek in the zip file itself. I have deleted all gscript files and folders (including the zip file itself) each time I have tried. I have re-downladed the zip file about 5 times now. I'm going to do it again and retry it, but I suspect that I'm going to have the same result.

I just can't figure out why the app itself isn't being created.

Go to Settings -> Applications -> Manage applications

and find Gscript Lite, and then:

1) Force Stop (if that button is lit up)
2) Clear Data
3) Uninstall

... and then go back to the Market and re-install it.

Ahhh, I see what the glitch is. I probably deleted gscript lite when I was taking out the zip files and the files and folders that it created. I forgot that it had been downloaded from the market and I was conflating the zip file with the app (I think that I thought that the zip file created the app). Yeah, I know, dumb...I've redownloaded it and will now go snatch the zip file yet again <groan> In my defense, I had already downloaded everything I needed yesterday so I forgot about the zip file and the app being separate...

The "app" is not "created" by unzipping the gscript.zip file - you download it and install Gscript Lite from the market.

Unless what you mean by "app itself isn't being created" is something like "Gscript Lite runs just fine but I can't locate either of the scripts" - but I certainly was not getting that from your prior posts.

Did you uninstall Gscript Lite and re-install it?

Edit for emphasis: the gscript.zip file has nothing to do with whether or not Gscript Lite is on your phone.

I don't know what you did so that it wouldn't start up, but fooling around on the SD card on an unrooted Android 2.1 phone won't delete an app.

I probably went in and deleted the app itself in my attempt to "clean things up".

Things are running well now. I'm one step away from rooting, but I'm having to recharge the phone before I go to step two due to all of the download and stuff. I'm going to go grab lunch and let it recharge.

Do you think that I can just put in the other SD card with the ROM download and load the ROM from there?

Thanks for the patience with this dummy and thanks for this procedure!

Yes.

But do it after you complete the rooting, when the phone is powered off, just before you start up Amon_RA.

[Edit] PS - If you need to for any reason, you can safely swap the SD card with Amon_RA running, but idle, with only one exception: when you are using the USB-MS toggle. The reason for this is that whenever you run an operation from the menu of Amon_RA that requires the SD card, it first mounts the SD card, then performs the operation, and dismounts it. So, when it is idle - it is safe to swap cards.

Hey guys, sorry this might be a dumb question but I'm wondering how do I get the ROM I dowloaded into the root folder? Thanks in advance for any help!

dont look for a root folder. it needs to be placed in the root directory of your SD card. that just means it needs to be transferred to the SD card and not be buried in any folder.

If you downloaded the ROM using the phone's browser, it will end up in /sdcard/download. The tutorial at the beginning of this thread (2nd post) shows exactly how to go about moving a file from /sdcard/download to /sdcard. When using a File Manager on the phone, "/sdcard" is the "root folder" of the SD card.

Note that in the case of a ROM .zip file, you do not unpack/unzip the ROM - the (Amon_RA) custom recovery will do that.

If you are using a PC to transfer the ROM file, and the Eris' SD card shows up as your E: (or F:, or G: ... you get the idea) drive, you drop the ROM .zip file right to the "top" of that drive - don't put it inside any folder that shows up inside the drive. If you transfer files this way, be absolutely sure to use the "Safely Remove Hardware" control in your system tray before you turn off "Disk Drive Mode" on the phone - otherwise you could corrupt your transferred files.

Root! XTR!

Market downloads not refreshing! (Not)

Thanks for all of the help. Now I guess I'm going to need help with my ROM since I can't get LauncherPro to load after downloading it (it worked fine with the HTC ROM). But that's a matter for a different thread.

Wheres root?! i dont get the su request. I just wanted the original root, not roms...

All this method does is provide you control over the phone in the form of the Amon_RA custom recovery. What you do after that is up to you.

You need to flash an "update" package that has a few components such as "su", "SuperUser.apk", and probably also the (Zanfur) OC kernel (which would be in a "boot.img" file).

With this "minimal root" method, you retain all your settings and 100% of your original ROM, but you "flash" the update in exactly the same way as you would a replacement ROM - with one critical exception: you do not wipe before you do the flashing.

Off the top of my head, I don't know where those update.zip packages are hosted - either you will find them yourself, or a good Samaritan will come along here and volunteer the information.

Good Luck - and make a Nandroid backup ASAP.

grndsers-rcng: okay, here's the engtools3.zip post re. gaining su/SuperUser.apk: http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-eris/132652-rooting-question.html#post1229966

And here's the post for the overclocking patch: http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-eris/135849-how-do-i-flash-oc-patch.html#post1253948

Keep in mind that you'll have to root before you can overclock. Also, you should certainly read through and understand exactly what you are doing (i.e., the gist of it) before just going-off and flashing these update files. But, the links for the downloads are contained in the posts.

Cheers!

If you download a ROM with the phone, it will end up in the

/sdcard/download

folder. But that's OK, because the above tutorial shows you exactly how to move a file from /sdcard/download to the "root" folder /sdcard. (Don't unzip the ROM file though!).

Because the ROMs are large (~ 70-100 MB), it takes a while to download a ROM to the phone - I suggest you plug the phone in to a charger, and set the option

Settings -> Applications -> Development -> Stay awake

so that the phone won't fall asleep while you are downloading. (If you are using WiFi, you might also want to set Settings -> Wireless & networks -> WiFi Settings -> (Menu -> Advanced) -> WiFi sleep policy -> Never while plugged in).

You can also copy it from a PC by connecting the phone to the PC via USB - but I'm not going to cover that, because this thread is about rooting without using a PC.

As far as picking a ROM, go do some reading at XDA Droid Eris Android Development. You might want to spend some time at this before you make a decision - some of the ROMs are quite similar to the "stock" OS and pretty rock-solid, and some of them require several workarounds to get certain features to work correctly.

What I would suggest you do is look carefully at the posts by the devs that release the ROMs - but not only for the information about the ROM. Look beyond that, and it will become evident to you which devs are thorough, and which ones rush to push things out without testing. Sloppy posts, weak details, no changelogs, no MD5 signatures - all hint that lack of attention to detail probably also happens while putting the ROM together.

Thanks for that. I was thinking that any rom could be added the same way. Awesome!

I have a few newbie questions for all you tech savy ppl out there. I used the tut in this thread and got all nice and rooted. YAY! My question is this. I downloaded ROM Manager and it is saying that I need the ClockworkMod Recovery. I am very new to all this and it is a bit confusing as to what I need and what I don't, what conflicts with what and what is just a different version of what I have already. I would appreciate any information you guys have to offer. This is what I have currently. I have the Droid Eris rooted with the PlainJane T2 rom. I would like to also know about OC. I tried to read up and find out what this rom came with (ie: kernel), if it OC and what it is clocked to. With that what can I raise it to. I would really love to understand all this and learn what all I can do with my Eris. I need the laymans terms guide until I get a grip on the terms and differences. I am here to learn and not have someone do it all for me, I just need a little help getting started. Thank you all for all you have done.

Harmageddon,

Yeah, its been quite the day on AF...looks like there were lots of posts and stuff lost for the last day or so :(.

Glad to know you want to read and learn for yourself, so I'll just nudge you in the right directions as best as I can.

I don't have any direct experience with ROM Manager or ClockworkMod Recovery, but I can tell you what little I do know. ClockworkMod is a custom recovery, similar to Amon_RA's custom recovery. ClockworkMod was authored by Koushik Dutta (AllDroid) and Amon_RA was authored by Amon_RA (XDA). I'm sure they both perform similar functions: allow you to flash updates and ROMs to your phone, make full system (Nandroid) backups and restore them, format /sdcard partitions, etc. Apparently, who(m)ever authored ROM Manager, selected ClockworkMod as the custom recovery of choice.

Here's Koush's ClockworkMod page: Official Homepage for the ClockworkMod Recovery.

Here's the XDA link for Amon_RA's custom recovery: xda-developers - View Single Post - [Recovery] [17-Mar-2010] RA-eris-v1.6.2

As far as PlaneJane T2 goes ([ROM]Plain_JaneT2 V2.0 7/18/10 Stock With everything ROOT!! - Page 15 - xda-developers), reading the first post really doesn't reveal too much about it and I've never flashed it. But here's a more informative thread on AF re. this ROM: http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-eris/115419-rom-plainjanet2-stock-2-1-oc-a2sd-2.html which will probably answer most of your questions.

From your questions, it does sound like you do know what overclocking is, so I won't give you a spiel re. that (unless you want :D).

Hope this helps. Cheers!

I tried searching the thread for this, but didn't see any posts about a possible problem that may come from performing a factory re-set. I did a factory re-set last week because certain features on my phone were not working. The re-set ended up knocking me off of Verizon's network, and I had to go to a store to have them fix it. According to your instructions, during the root process I will have to perform a wipe. This would potentially present the same problem where I would have to have Verizon re-authenticate my phone. Is there a way around doing the wipe or am will I be unable to root the phone? Any advice would be appreciated.
