Unofficial Incredible Wallpaper Thread

thanks to both of you, that's the first thing I've had to go on for awhile! I assume I can also resize any photos I take to 480 x 800 and copy/paste to that 960 x 800 template and they'll be centered nicely?

I'll try to figure out how to create that template in the meantime and if I can't figure how to do it, I'll be in touch, but thanks again!

Yes, you can resize (or crop) them to make it fit. Just be careful how you resize so that you don't distort the image.

I'm a huge fan of Photoshop and it's super easy to do this in it. With Photoshop, when you /paste it goes right to the center. No adjusting or guessing needed.

If you don't have something to make a template in, just grab one of the plain black wallpapers from this thread and use that as your template. Actually any 960x480 wallpaper from here will do since you won't see the sides anyway.

Here's a site with thousands of 480x800, I got a lot of my images from here. Everything from abstract to movies to animals to cars, etc:

My first attempt and creating a wallpaper. I know the white doesn't extend to the edge of the image, but you can't see it when it's on the phone. Go Green!!

I am not working this weekend, so I am sure I can throw a Red Wings wallpaper together. I was planning on making one for the start of the season, anyway. Glad you like the Michigan and Detroit wallpapers.

1st of all, thank you all for the great pics, and the info shared in this forum!

2ndly, i have tried to fix a pic for my phone (which i do not have in hand yet), but had a few questions: 1) when you resize to 960x800, we mean pixels right? does it matter what the image size is? 2) when i finished the pic, i saved at the 960x800 (as a png) and it stretched it sideways. is this supposed to happen?

i will attach the pic with no changes other than the graphics. have not resized 1st one at all, and 2nd one is to test on a phone. could someone please tell me if ieither would work? or perhaps fix it to make it work? or finally, just tell me it's hopeless? ;)

Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with NoobBoobs like me! :D

Nope, neither will work. The one that you resized is 618x800. Is that first one the original image that you want? I can try to make it the right size for you if you want...

1) when you resize to 960x800, we mean pixels right? does it matter what the image size is? Yes, we mean pixels. And if by "image size" you mean file size, no... it doesn't matter.

2) when i finished the pic, i saved at the 960x800 (as a png) and it stretched it sideways. is this supposed to happen? Nope, it sure isn't. Not sure why it did that, but you should be saving these as .jpeg. It works better.

Okay, I just worked this one up for you. The image part itself is only 480x800, which is the size of the main screen. So as long as you don't want it scrolling, this will be perfect.

There is really no way to get the image onto a full 960 without stretching the hell out of it, which kind of defeats the point of the "skinny" image :D

Terabethia,

thanks so much for your help. i thought png was they way to go based on something i thought i read a million pages ago, but maybe not. i could resave it as a jpeg and try again, but i'd hate for your work to go to waste! i will try this when my phone comes in and see how it works. if for some reason i have issues, i'll be back to pick your brains again. the page for some reason would not let me post a big, original image on the page like the others have done. that, or i used the wrong link, but it said it had to be a certain size to attach. maybe if i use the right html link, it will show as a big pic (unaltered) in the post and can be better modified from there.

thanks again for your help!

PNG is lossless, meaning it doesn't have any compression. Whenever you are working with graphics, you want to use PNG. PNG also has transparancy which is another reason to use it with graphics. But for wallpapers, it's pretty much a waste. The file sizes are a lot higher and you just don't need that level of detail when not using animation.

So anyway, if you upload the original full size picture to photobucket and just post the link (like you did with the other two), that might work. You probably can't post it as an attachment here since the forum restricts the file size and image size of attachments.

If you do end up using Photobucket, make sure you set the image uploading to full, or something like that. Mine was set to medium, and shrank it down to around 640X533. Also, the largest file size you can upload Photobucket is 1MB, unless you have a paid account. So if you have larger .png images, resave them as .jpg and the file size will shrink, so you are able to upload the full resolution picture

I'm at work so I can't do it right now, but will give you instructions on how to do it. Teach a man to fish, if you will

This is from memory, so the exact steps might be a little different

1. Download Paint.net here (it's free)

2. Save the image to your computer, and open it in paint.net

3. Go to image -> resize (at the top)

4. Resize the image by changing one of the axis (make sure Maintain Aspect Ratio is checked). You will have to determine which one to change. Try the top one first, by changing it to 960. If the bottom axis is larger than 800, this is the one to change. If it is not, change the bottom number to 800, and the top number should be at least 960.

5. Now that the image is resized, you will need to crop it. click the dotted square, which is in the top left of the pane on the right of the screen. This allows you to select part of the image. When you are doing this, on the bottom it will say the size of the selection, in pixels. Select the image so you get 960x800.

6. select image -> crop to selection

7. You now have a 960x800 image.

8. Enjoy

If this helped, please click the Thanks button. If you have more questions, feel free to ask or PM me.

I have posted it before, but in case anyone missed it....

The easiest way to make a perfectly sized wallpaper for your incredible (or several other phones) without having to have any knowledge of picture editing or downloading software, is to use THIS website. All you have to do is browse to a saved picture on your computer, select the type of phone you have, and then crop it how you want it. The site takes care of the rest. All of the wallpapers I have uploaded to this thread were made there (I used to use Photoshop but this is much faster). As an example, I made this one in about 15 seconds. lol

That is a hell of a lot easier than my method, lol

I don't have Photoshop but tried this a couple times in Picasa, and had no luck, as it wasn't as obvious as I'd hoped. (I know it uses the "collage" function, but I was definitely unsuccessful)

Anyone out there (Hello, Terabethia, are you there?!) have step-by-step directions to get a 480 x 800 wallpaper centered on a 960 x 800 background, without using Photoshop and hopefully using something free like Picasa, Irfanview, Paint, etc?

This, as I've understood it, is the only way to get the full photo as your wallpaper if you're using non-scrolling screens? I just can't seem to get the final piece of the puzzle in place...

I use Paint.net.

Create a new image that is 960x800. Open up your 480x800 image. Copy this and paste it in a new layer on your blank image (edit -> paste in new layer). Press escape to deselect the image. Center your mouse cursor in the middle of the image (on the bottom right, it shows where your mouse is at, shown as first number comma second number (246,43 for example). Move your mouse so the first number is 240. it doesn't matter what the second number is, just take note of it) Now drag the image so the first number shows 480, and the second number is the one you noted. Now that it is centered, merge your layers (layers -> merge layer down)

There is probably an easier way to do this, but this is how I did it in post #1420

Hope this helps

beenz and detroitwhiteboy,

Appreciate all the help. Thanks for the wallpapers, and I will check out the sites that you posted.

Hi there :D

Okay, here's what you do in Photoshop.

  • Open Photoshop.
  • Click on File, then click New.
  • In the options, set your width to 960 and your height to 800. Resolution should be 72 (it defaults to this). Background doesn't really matter, it can be any color you want since you don't see it.
  • Click Okay.

Now you have a blank 980x800 template.

  • Next you wanna open your image in Photoshop.
  • You can either drag and drop it into the program or you can go to File - Open and navigate to your picture.
  • While in your picture, hold down ctrl key and then press A. This will select all. Now hold down ctrl key and press C. This will copy.
  • Move to your blank template and hold down ctrl while clicking V. This will paste the image onto your blank template.
  • It will default to the direct center of the template, so you should not move it once copied.

Now just save the template with your image on it to your desktop and then transfer it to your phone.

As for other programs, I am not going to be much help. I can tell you that you can not do this with Picasa. There is probably some way to do this (or something similar) in paint but I have no idea. When you have access to $2000 photo editing software you don't much else... sorry :(

If you want to email me the pictures you would like done, I can just do them for you if you can't figure it out with any of the free programs. Someone on here posted a link to a website that seems to work well enough as well. The problem is, it won't help with what you want, as that website crops and stretches in order to get it the right size. So if you have pic that is very large and the same (or close to) aspect ratio it will be fine, otherwise it won't work for you.
