From the after root sections:

i would really recommend that everyone switch to amon ra 2.3. it is a much better recovery then clockwork mod. you can get the recovery here:PC36IMG_RA_2.3.zip
here are the instructions:
1.download the file.
2.rename the file by erasing the "_RA_2.3" part of the name so that it is only named PC36IMG. make sure not to add ".zip" to the name as windows hides extensions.
3.transfer the file to the root (that means not in any folder) of the sd card.
4.power off (you most likely need to uncheck fastboot. settings/apps/uncheck fastboot.) then press and hold power+vol down.
5.hboot should see the file and select yes to update.
6.select no to reboot because we want to go into recovery and make a nandroid backup.
7.select recovery.
8.select backup and restore and select backup
9. select the first three and wimax. the other partitions do not need to be backed up. always keep one nandroid backup with wimax keys backed up on your computer.
10.now you can reboot.
11.using a file manager of some sort or even through your computer via usb, you should rename or delete the PC36IMG file on your card. otherwise you will be asked to update every time you go to the hboot screen. you do not need that file any more.

After you followed the directions and got a recovery on there you should be rooted.

S-off + custom recovery = rooted.

You may need to flash the superuser file located in the guide

no that is not needed. revolutionary gives you s-off. so if you have s-off then there is no need to re-run it. now all you need to do is flash a rom. please read the dummies guide that rxpert linked to. go to the flashing section to get the instructions.

i would try out mikg3.0. here is the link:MikG v3.0 [12/17/2011]

if you wat to stay just on the stock rom then you need to download the superuser app from the market and you are then fully rooted.
 
revolutionary just finished, and i have s-off, still. so just to make sure i went to the market and downloaded root checker and it told me that i do not have proper root access...

actually nevermind. i forgot to flash superuser onto the phone, therefor i never got the actual full root. but now it has superuser flashed.

i used to have an evo 4g that was given to me rooted but i broke the screen. it had an aftermarket rom on it that was installed using rom manager. should i do it again? if so i need help with that as well.

NOOOO do not use rom manager. it is way to buggy and tends to create more problems then it is worth. do everything in recovery. amon ra you have is a great recovery and also it will not work with rom manager.

try mikg like i suggested in my previous post. also please read the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html especially the flashing sections.
 
Ok. And one last thing. Is there a way for me to get rid of some of these factory apps? I am tired of seeing the updates for things I don't use.
 
Yes there is. After you have flashed MikG (which will get rid of most of the bloat doing that) download an app called titanium backup. You can use that to uninstall any other bloatware that you still dont use.

You can also use titanium to backup any non-system app data like games and such so you dont lose your progress.

so i either overlooked something or i just cant read but i am confused about how i would go about the roms.

ok so revolutionary is what you used to get you s-off. it is not a recovery. i believe then you have clockwork mod. i would recommend that you switch recoveries to amon ra2.3. the instructions to switch you recoveriy is in the guide i linked you to.

and as far as roms go i would suggest that you try mikg3.0 it is a far better rom then the stock rom. it is fast abd stable. it has sense 2.1 and sense 3.0 built in.
 
Reboot into your recovery. It will tell you what recovery you are on in the bottom left corner.


If you have Amon Ra, thats good. If you have clockwork mod, I would suggest switching to Amon Ra 2.3 Instructions are in the switching recovery part of the Rooting for Dummies Gingerbread Gudie

The Instructions for flashing can also be found there. I always wipe EVERYTHING except SD card 2-3 times. (SD-EXT and SD-android.secure should be wiped). Then I flash Superwipe just to make sure its all clean and good to go.


Following the wiping process flash your ROM.
