Root Unrevoked3: Is your firmware too new?

Thanks for the link...I was already reading that thread prior.

Disregard my question please. Apparently I'm in over my head with this stuff. It's by no means quick and painless. I've tried all methods of rooting my EVO...on Windows Vista, as well as Mac OS X Lion...and have had no success. The error message remains, "...firmware too new?"

After hours of reading forums, and attempting all methods in this thread, I've had no luck, so I'm over it. Nothing but respect for all you who know how to root the EVO, cause my EVO's being a stubborn SOB.

well if you still have access to a pc we can still try if your game. i need to know though what your hboot is. power off then press and hold power+vol down. this will get you to the hboot(bootloader) screen. at the top it will say what your hboot is. what does it say?

I had this problem and tried everything suggested above, but none of it worked.

In the end the solution that worked for me was to use the earlier unrevoked 3.21. Worked with no problems at all, really straight forward.

I downloaded it from here Download unrEVOked 3.21.exe from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way (got the link from xda-dev forum, but can't remember the exact page and who to credit for it).

I was getting error with original install "firmware to new" so i tried this option i have factory reset about 5 times, tried with htc sync and without it, tries setting to disk drive instead of "charge only", and it still wont root for me, using HTC EVO 4g from sprint. and the unrevoked 3.21, seems to get further along, but now its just sitting there with a message "waiting for root ... (safe to restart if this doesnt work)" ... im not technology inept, but i could really use some help.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!
what is your hboot? power off the press and hold power+vol down.

actually after i posted this, i went and tried HTC Evo 4G - EVO 4G Gingerbread update now has root via Revolutionary

and it rooted me fine, also with my HTC EVO 4G from sprint, the only way to get myself into the bootloader is to remove the battery, then hold vol-down. press powerbutton for 3 sec, and continue to hold vol-down untill bootloader apears. i dont know why, but if i dont pull the battery, it will not allow me to get into the bootloader.

yeah gingerbread introduced fastboot. to disable it you need to go to settings/applications/and uncheck fastboot.

I tried the factory reset and switching it from charge only to disk drive. I have tried about ten times hoping that i would get lucky and i cant get it to root. i have the

Evo 4g
Android version 2.3.3
baseband version 2.15.00.0808

could it really be that it is too new and i just have to wait

With having android version 2.3.3 you most likely have hboot 2.16 which unrevoked does not work with. Go to the Gingerbread rooting guide stickied at the top of the forum and follow those directions.

xtreme is right, but to be sure lets check and see what your hboot is. power your phone off then press and hold power+vol down. this will take you to the hboot (bootloader) screen.

if your hboot is 6.16 or 6.17 (revolution will chnage your hboot from 2.15 or 2.16) then you need to go here:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html.

if you hboot is 2.10 or less then you need to use unrevoked.

edit: oops forgot to link the other guide. and here it is:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html

Thats a new one for me. Did the doss box give you the sn so you can put it in the box on the revolutionary web site?

so the doss box closes when you try to type the beta key in or after you type the beta key in and hit enter?

It closed even I haven't type it or even read it.

when I run revolutionary.exe, an error comes up. " this application has failed to start because AdbWinApi.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."
