Update of Android 2.1

i get the feeling that htc has 2.1 for the hero ready to roll and is just waiting for the green light from google.

theyve had 2.1 long enough to get the nexus one up and running on it, they know the sence ui interface inside out, and i cant really see them strugling to incorperate the 2 on a technical level.

its all down to marketing now.. google arnt going to want the nexus ones thunder to be stolen by the hero getting 2.1 plus sence ui in the same week or even month as the nexus one going live..

just my opinion...

Neither will HTC as the Nexus One is an HTC device after all...

@TeleC@ster: I don't follow your "simple reasoning". We don't know how many "background tasks" will be running on the Hero because we haven't seen 2.0 running on it yet. Also, "more functionality" doesn't necessarily equate to lower performance.

That doesn't mean my simple reasoning doesn't make sense, does it?

2.1 will it run in Hero: Yip
2.1 will it perform as good as on 1GHz machines? Nope

well it is and it isnt.. sure htc manufacture the nexus but google own the rights to it..

you wont see an htc badge on a nexus one.

Er...?

Was about to tell you to look again but Selespeed beat me to it lol

So far, we only know that Google owns the rights to sell it. Beyond that, we don't know what their agreement is. They've openly said that the device is entirely manufactured and designed by HTC with input from Google.

According to HTC, from the Article about the NExus One's offical unveiling...

"... The phone is actually HTC branded, unlike the pre-release versions we've seen ..."

EDIT: Looks Like I was beat to it! :D

My point is that it may perform "as good as on 1GHz machines" because it is tuned to do so! The Android 2.0 installed on a Hero will not be identical in build to that seen on (for example) the Nexus. There's far more affecting performance and usability than mere clock speed, something that will be obvious to anyone who has experienced both the initial release ROM and the updated version.

so 2.1 on the Hero will not be the same "version" as 2.1 on Nexus. Well, that's an interesting angle.

2.1.x tuned for Hero: tuned to what? faster? at least without flash
2.1.y tuned for Nexus: to not perform too good but with flash?

My point is just: Running Windows7 on a machine with minimum requirements will not Perform as nice as running it on a mean machine.
What's wrong with that?

I'm not going to be convinced that with the right Benchmarking Hero and Nexus will perform the same.

On the other hand 2.1 will solve a lot of issues on/with the Hero.

i agree with that!!

2.1 will fix lots of stuff on the hero but it wont be the same performance as a 1gb procrssor, hopefully HTC tweek it enough so that it keeps up and works well and then someone strips the junk and rubbish enough so that it'll perform very well

whatever 2.1 brings it least it'll fix
(hopefully)
- bluetooth file transfer
- vioce related stuff
- general iFan boy/girl egos

I cant wait to get it regardless of if it performs as well as the Nexus because it'll fix those problems and probably lots of others.

my opinion!!

Please don't put words into my mouth. I didn't say "version", I said "build". There's a fundamental difference.

Sorry for that. The subject is not important enough to irritate you or anybody.

I put version between " " to express that using different builds to differentiate is interesting. Again, apologies.

In that case, you weren't misrepresenting me and it's I who should apologise for suggesting that you were. :)

I guess it could be said to resemble installing a desktop OS such as Windows, in that specific drivers and libraries are installed depending on the hardware found. Similarly, the various Android devices also have differences which will be reflected in how the OS is compiled for that device. It's the same underlying OS, though.

The proof through, as the saying goes, will be in the pudding. If 2.1 turns out to be a three-legged dog I'll take all the "told you so" comments like a man. :D

it's never wrong to apologise to an honest man :)

the pudding makes us eager...uhm at least me.

OT then:

I would find it amazing if developers succeed to give me the top of the bill feeling although it is also in their interest to make me look at my next machine.

Have a good night.

so i was wrong about the htc branding on the nexus then.... oh hum...

point still stands .. google will want there moment of glory, and if all the speculation regarding how well htc manage to tweak 2.1 + sence ui for the hero turns out to be true and it really does run well and fix most of the bugs and add some cool new features. then id happily stick with my hero..

if 2.1 turns out that good then why bother chopping a hero in for a nexus.. for a flash on the camera?

i know this is a very simplistic way to explain my thoughts but i hope people can take it as an opinion, and not start listing each and every diferance between the 2 phones.

hehe my heart just skipped a beat when i saw there was a new rom upgrade for the Hero on the HTC site!! but its not 2.1...its for some H3 thing :(

Yeah - it's the 2.73 build for the Hero on 3. The rest of us have been using the 2.73 build for months now.

yea i saw that a couple of hours ago and thought ooo - but then i read it properly :( oh well

heres a reply from htc when i asked when will hero get android 2.1

Hi Mark,

Although new software is continually in testing for our devcies, until testing is passed new ROM versions are not released and we do not know which versions the ROM's will be.

We cannot confirm which devices will receive the 2.1 update at this time.

Best Regards

Mike

Lol customer support will be one of the last to know when a ROM update is due. I guarantee they won't have bothered to ask the people who actually know.

In fact, HTC will probably release it and then tell customer support it has been released lol
