Root [Virgin Mobile] [New Update] Patience Please

Could I also install Chainfire's supersu instead of "Koush's" superuser?

Yes, but you may have to do it via a flashable zip file. There were issues with a recent update of Chainfire's SU that caused boot loops on many different phone models. Koush's superuser is open source, as it should be. After all, you are opening your phone to unlimited dangers, you should be able to know what's happening. I highly recommend Koush's version for many reasons!

Okay, thank you for all of the help. I was running the rooted stock rom so I just backed up then updated, everything went well. Actually, I was having problems with handcent mms before, and messaging mms. The messaging would try to download and wouldnt succeed until I made it downlpad manually. Now I can receive mms through handcent. I haven't encountered any problems whatsoever.

Hey Jerry, I've been trying to get this update to flash all day, but unfortunately I haven't had any luck. I've tried flashing the update.zip after restoring the stock backup, after restoring, then factory resetting, after restoring, factory resetting, and rooting...I'm just fresh out of ideas. I've also tried reflashing TWRP through odin, but that didn't help either. I love your work, and I jump on every opportunity I can to use your latest software =] The error I get receive when I attempt to flash the update.zip is always the same:

"assert failed: apply_patch_check ("EMMC:/dev/bloc
E: Error in /external_sd/Download/UPDATE/update_S
(Status 7)"

Here's an image of my info:

I'm just so sad :'(

It gave me an error when I tried to update once but it did actually update. Go into your settings and check for an update in the settings to make sure it didn't do it?

Looks like you might never have updated your phone originally? When we are talking about stock, it means you must be on the 4.1.2 stock update. Did you ever update your phone right out of the box?

I'm stuck at the same point as a few others. I've restored the TWRP backup from g60, and my update via no-props keeps failing.

I've been using SuperSU without problems thus far, but plan to switch to Koush's Superuser once I am done fooling around with this update.

That's what I was thinking. Was there an ota for ma8 to mc1?

The new update is mc1 to mg5 so those with ma8 baseband would fail asset check.

I'm guessing the asset check could be removed to allow it to be installed unless there was some type of hardware difference.

Removing assert checks will not work, the patches check each files sha1sum and if they don't match it fails. If you have updated/modified/changed anything that is updated by the zip file, it will fail.

If you cannot use the no-props zip file, you will need to restore g60madman's backup, install the stock recovery, and possibly do a factory reset in order to update.

Whoaaa it's all coming together..

So I found a stock recovery.tar, flashed it..and that's all working. I did a factory reset of the stock rom, but when I try to let the phone do its system update, it fails with the exact same error because it's still trying to update MC1 to MG5.. :frown: I've contacted VM customer support and asked if they could send me a MA8 to MC1 OTA update file (a looong shot, I know). Would anyone here happen to know where else I may procure such a file? :)

If you restore g60madman's backup, you should be updated to 4.1.2. ;)

After restoring g60madman's backup and rebooting, please tell us what it shows under

Settings>>About Device>>

  1. Baseband version
  2. Kernel version
  3. Build number

Please give the exact error stated in recovery when the install fails (you can scroll the text window at the failed screen).

There are a few reasons it could fail, 1- you have not successfully restored stock, 2- you are not using the no-props zip, 3- your TWRP install is messed up, 4- unknown ;)

After restoring the g60 backup with TWRP 2.5.0.0 I get:

It looks like the issue is with your modems, that's what's on mmcblk0p1. Are you on a sprint or a virgin mobile phone? Have you tried to flash a modem at some point?

OK SO I GET AN ERROR WHEN I TRY TO FLASH THE NO PROPS.ZIP, now how do I get my stock recovery back and when I get it back I just am unsure of the process, please can a guide or someone make a way of helping me make my phone complexly stock so I can update to mg5 via virgin mobile update firmware annoying thing that used to pop up, then root like I did from the sticky on this page and then flash victorious right now my phone says its mg5, but I cannot flash new victorious(it just softbricks at the Samsung logo) and when I try to flash the no props.zip again I get an error and, buti can still use my phone to call, please jerry can you help me sort this out via irc chat?

I'm a VM user. And no I have not :/ I've only ever flashed the Victorious ROMs, The VaeVictus Kernels, or restored g60madman's stock backup :O

EDIT: it may actually be a slightly different problem than mmcblk0p1...because I've been receiving the status 7 error :x

Status 7 just means an assert check has failed, which we know from the output.

Please try installling with TWRP 2.4.3, this may be a TWRP 2.5 issue (I have not used 2.5). You can either flash it via Odin, or extract the recovery.img file and place it on your sdcard, then use dd to install it (note- this assumes your sdcards are not swapped):
Code:
su
dd if=/mnt/extSdCard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/recovery
reboot recovery
Then try restoring g60madman's backup and then flashing the no-props zip
-----------------------------------
edit: another idea:
Try using dd to make a backup of your modem, then copy this stock modem backup: NON-HLOS.bin (put it on your sdcard)
Code:
su
dd if=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/modem of=/mnt/extSdCard/NON-HLOS.bin.bak
dd if=/mnt/extSdCard/NON-HLOS.bin of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/modem
Then try to flash the no-props zip

If you have issues, you can restore your backup with this code:
Code:
su
dd if=/mnt/extSdCard/NON-HLOS.bin.bak of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/modem

I was going to say, can we have someone who hasn't updated pull a modem image via ADB and post it? ...and maybe some of us can save some copies for archiving in case of future emergencies.

Then we have a fix for folks restoring g60's images over the MA8 build. We might also want to edit in HUGE blinking, capital letters for people to do all the carrier updates before they root or install Victorious. Did older versions of Victorious install over MA8 builds?
