Thinking of starting the 'Private' series from James Patterson since I am almost done with the Dresden Series.

Anyone read Private?

!!!!

Excellent choice!
Huge James Patterson fan here :)

I have read private and did thoroughly enjoy it, not as much as the Alex Cross series but still very good.

Just started Second Honeymoon.

Just finished Generation Kill by Evan Wright which recounts his embedded experience with the First Reconnaissance Battalion Marines in 2003 in Iraq. It's a great read (esp if you've served) and HBO made a great (and faithful) mini-series based on this fine chronicle.

I just picked up a book I read in high school when it first came out as I enjoy "revisiting" books I've read when I younger to see how my perspectives and opinions have changed over the years. It's John Irving's A Prayer for Owen Meany. I enjoy many of his novels...but he has also written a lot of "turds".

Just started up The Dark Tower Series by Stephen King. Finished the first book. Not too bad so far.

I really enjoyed the first two books. It's all down hill after that. I suffered through the last three books just as a matter of principle.

I'm not a huge Stephen King fan but I did read most of his earlier works when I was younger and I remember really enjoying The Stand.

Brian Green, The Elegant Universe

Also the follow up, Fabric of the Cosmos.

Excellent reads if you can follow them. Took a few read throughs to get it for me. :)

These are excellent. Greene does a great job of describing complex ideas for laymen and he's a gifted teacher. I believe he hosts a TV show that cover the topics from the books but I haven't seem them yet.

Paul Davies wrote similar books in the 80's that covered some of the earlier theories of the time and Nigel Calder was from that same vein.

And of course, there is the illustrious Richard Feynman who really made quantum physics accessible for so many young students and fans of the sciences. His autobiographical books (Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!) are a fun read as are his Six Easy Pieces and Six Not-So-Easy Pieces. But I think his crowning work is QED: The Strange Theory of Light and Matter which really brought QED into focus for me (does anyone really understand anything to do with quantum theory?).

And for those cosmology fans...Rocky Kolb's Blind Watchers Of The Sky: The People And Ideas That Shaped Our View Of The Universe is a well written primer on the subject.

There are so many other great books on these subjects...but I gotta run.

I'm kind of on again off again with Stephen King as well, but I too really enjoyed The Stand. Maybe because a good chunk of it took place in areas I'm familiar with in Colorado. I've never been to Main (and am not likely to because of all the weird crap that happens there :-D)

Rudyard Kipling:-
Captains Courageous
Kim

Voltaire:-
Candide

Patrick O'Brian
Master & Commander & the following 19 books. Highly recommended intelligent adventure based on actual historical events of naval warfare in Napoleonic era

This is book 4 in the series. I've read the other 3. This is a highly enjoyable alternate history/magic is real romp.

How is it? I have it lined up on my kindle but I haven't started reading it yet.

I'm really loving it. I read The Shining ages ago, but Doctor Sleep gave a quick run down of what happened and continues forward. I'm finding the book to be very easy to read and understand, but somewhat lacking in the 'suspense' department. I guess I will get there soon enough. I'm only about 34% through the book according to Kindle app.

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, in audiobook form, read by Wil Wheaton.

This is right up my alley. Everything about this book is directly wired to every seratonin receptor in my brain.

In fact, I am so much in nerd heaven when I read this that I feel furtive and guilty, as though I'm hunkered down in a dark corner stuffing myself with ten pounds of the tastiest junk food known to man and staring at porn.

Okay, that last was so the guys could identify with it, too. The porn would actually gross me out; I'd just be eating the junk food.

If I had to describe this book in one word, it would be nerdgasm. But that's kind of crass and gross, so maybe ... nerdvana.

You lost me at Wil Wheaton. I might hate him as much as Sheldon Cooper does lol.

Edit: just looked it up on Amazon. Sounds cool. Added to my wish list. Just hope I don't hear Wil Wheaton's voice in my head while I'm reading it lol.:p
