What the heck is the deal with iphone users Vs Android users

Honestly, the innovative thing was the user interface I guess thats subjective as well but I am not the only person that felt that way by a long shot, apple saw a gap in the market and went for it, that's it, but it payed off and was a damned innovative interface that was intuitive and effective and all other phones were left playing catchup, sure there was other things left out but that doesn't mean it wasn't innovative.

In the way that the first mom put jelly on a peanut butter sandwich, then yes Apple was innovative ... and they even cut the crusts off. However if you are going to play the popularity card, one could argue that Apple is still playing catchup with RIM and Symbian who continue to dominate the smartphone market, even in light of Apple's great success. Of course they are all developing using different business models and so far they seem to be successful for all involved, including Google, given Android's growth rate. If we can get beyond the subjective semantics of 'intuitive' and 'effective' as well as 'innovative', the success of the iPhone design, marketing and packaging (Apple's greatest strengths) in combination with decent QC and good customer service. I applaud their success.

I have read far more positive than negative reviews, maybe that was just chance, but the other guy was suggesting that the majority of reviews are negative, I don't think that is true.

If everyone can get past the superlative anecdotal statements and learn to put things in perspective, then we can have a reasonable discussion. You have probably read more positive results because you are most likely drawn to those types of reviewers and the organizations they write for. The other guy is most likely prone to read sites that are critical of Apple. The blogs are awash with references both positive and negative, but where the original, the 3G, and the 3GS were met with only petty sniping, there seems to be several issues with the iPhone 4 that more credible reviewers seem to find newsworthy. Perhaps it's simply the growth of Apple that makes them a bigger target to the media or it's a reaction to the way Apple's PR has dismissed the critics, but I am saying that there are markedly more negative comments about this device then there have been with previous major releases from Apple.

Please don't insult me, I'm not stupid, I don't think I am massively influenced by apples marketing, I don't want an iPhone. I did mean that in my experience it is smoother, don't try to imply that a simple omission is indication of poor thinking.

My apologies if my comment was perceived as a personal insult. I was speaking to iPhone proponents who regurgitate generalities as fact without support or room for rebuttal. Your comment's omission is the exact thing I was criticizing as it does appear to be a statement of fact rather than an opinion.

However I have tried them both and I do think the iPhone is a smoother experience, ok I accept that's a pretty vague term, but what I really mean is the interface is easier to use, more intuitive and simpler (not neccecerily by a long shot especialy with recent android phones). And you know what? That's largely because it is a simpler phone, it doesn't have a lot of the features newer android devices do, however it has far and away enough features for the average user which brings me to your next comment.

"In your opinion", please. Especially due to the volatility of this topic, it is essential not to misrepresent opinion as fact. Truth be told, most users would be perfectly happy with the features of a 'dumb' phone.

I don't disagree, I like the ability to customise my phone, which is why I want an android, but it does come at a cost of ease of use, I'm not saying the iPhone is simply objectively better than the competition I'm saying that calling it garbage or a "kids toy" is stupid, yeah the advertising from apple is obnoxious, what advertisements aren't? Doesn't mean you (not specifically you but the "iphone is garbage"/"just a toy" crowd) have to respond in kind.

Honestly, Apple counts on the response. It keeps this kind of discussion going long after their expenses have ended -- it is calculated and deliberate (this is 25 years of major market advertising experience speaking here). The worst thing that could happen is for nobody to care one way or the other.

Like what? show me a phone which was released before the iPhone which did what it could with the same ease of use sure phones could browse the web etc before, but it was clunky and awkward and unreliable? as for it being a hit only because of the apple logo Apple had no reputation for phones before the iPhone launched, you could make the claim for current iPhones (you'd still be wrong, the label does help the sales but they are still good phones without it) but for the first iPhone?

You want me to list every feature of the iPhone and shoot it down, one by one?

How about you point out the features you think were NEW and I will point you in the direction of which phones had already done that.

Yes but the person I was referring to was acting like it was not a big step up from the previous iPhone, that it was receiving lackluster reviews all over the place which is simply false.

Now, it DID get a "DO NOT BUY" from Consumer Reports. Who I've never seen be biased for/against a product.

Techradar ran a comparison review of the Galaxy S, the Desire and the iPhone4

Desire came out on top overall, but didn't win all the categories. But that's the Desire at 2.1, once 2.2 hits the streets officially all the reviews will need to be rewritten to take into account it's new level of awesomeness :) ;)

iphone4? iPhoneflaw, snigger...

I LOVE APPLE AND ALL OF THERE iPHONES....

WHY????

Because now google are competing with them, MY ANDROID PHONE IS AWESOMEEEE,

would my HTC Desire be what it is now without iPhone....... Probably not.

And it wont be long till Google take over like windows did, but what will happen then? they get lazy and start producing rubbish...... Vista anybody hmmmm no thanks.

But untill that happens, and it will believe me, I will enjoy every single android release HTC phone for giving me a bundle of stuff Apple cant, (on the other side of the coin i will also miss stuff apple provide)

Just my two pence worth

And yet making devices which imitate the iPhones interface more and more, and besides it doesn't matter how simple an idea it was, I mean your peanut butter and jam analogy is pretty apt. It's not like it was some massive godly genius of apple that made it happen, they just stumbled upon a collection of things that worked really well together. Just like putting peanut butter and jam together doesn't take a first class degree, but it really really works (sorry I'm a PB&J fanboy).

I don't think I am drawn to particular sites that love apple, I don't love apple so I'm not sure why I would be. Honestly it is probably just chance. From what I've seen most of the negative press has been focussed on one (admittedly fairly big) design flaw, but they still found a lot to love about the phone. and the idea that it is not as big a step up as from the 3G to 3Gs is not borne out by the reviews.

In everyday language people often omit IMO or I think qualifiers simply because it is taken as a given in that context. Nonethless I accept your next point that due to the nature of the discussion it is best to keep them in.

"In your opinion", please. Especially due to the volatility of this topic, it is essential not to misrepresent opinion as fact. Truth be told, most users would be perfectly happy with the features of a 'dumb' phone.

"I do think the iPhone is a smoother experience"
"what I really mean is the interface is easier to use, more intuitive and simpler"
No need to put in my opinion as the second sentence is clarifying a term used in the first and therefore covered by the "I think".

It keeps this kind of discussion going long after their expenses have ended -- it is calculated and deliberate (this is 25 years of major market advertising experience speaking here). No disagreements here, all the more reason for android proponents to be more reasonable. And yes I am aware that apple fanboys are just as bad, I just don't see that as a good excuse.

I said it was the implementation and interface which was innovative, and I didn't want you to list the features which wern't new, I asked for an example of a phone which did everything the iphone did as well as it did.

I don't think you can really classify a screen full of icons as something new... do you?

And by definition "implementation" cannot be innovation.

I don't think you can really classify a screen full of icons as something new... do you?

Yes.
As I said before just because it's not something flashy or complicated it doesn't mean it's not innovation. And a new implementation that works better than an old one is innovation. It was the simplicity of the user interface that was the innovation, you can argue it was overhyped (it was) and you can argue that it's a bad idea (it wasn't), but it certainly was a novel implementation of the technology.

And by definition "implementation" cannot be innovation.

This is just false, implementation can be innovative, things aren't either fully new or fully old.

Yes.

Umm... no. If it isn't new, it's not innovation. Just plain and simple.

that's the problem with defining "innovation" - it's such a vague term
you can interpret it to mean every new little ui component or a polished corner of an icon; anything newly introduced, (which, in practice translates in to everything)
or you can pick the more useful (not for marketing) definition of it referring to some actually new functionality

Apple releases one new type of Iphone per year. In comparison with the multiple different kinds of droid phones that are released per year.

While it may appear as though any one specific type of droid phone doesn't have the 'problems' that the Iphone 4 is reported to have, that is not an accurate comparison, because the previous droid models released 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 months prior, had problems of their own. Droid has the capacity of immediately correcting any issues because a new phone will be released in 1-2 months anyway.

If you compare the total number of hardware/software issues that Apple releases in one year in comparison to the total number that the droid phones have in one year, I'll give droid the benefit of the doubt and assume that number will be equal (reality is different).
i don't get what you're trying to argue here - you seem to be saying that the iphone has as much problems as all the android phones put together, and you figure that's a positive thing about the iphone?

2. If you have to replace the battery in your Eris simply to catch up to the Iphone 4's battery...that should be the indication that the Iphone 4 has a longer lasting battery.
see my previous post

...but I believe it to be a very very small number, much like the reception issue.

Again, I've had absolutely zero problems with my Iphone 4, as have all my co-workers and friends who have one as well.
seeing as how cr got 3 devices, all bought from separate retailers, and all of them had this issue (which a communications engineer would gladly point out by just looking at the device), i'm inclined to think it's a very very large number that has the reception issue
you likely happen to reside in a high reception area, so the loss in signal strength doesn't cause a dropped call

What will happen once the antenna issue is actually fixed by Apple
unless their "fix" is to give everyone free bumpers (not very likely) or to recall and replace all the devices (yeah, right), it will not be fixed - it's a design fault in the hardware, you can't fix that with a firmware update

I actually really like the iPhone, my ipod Touch, and my iPad 3G. Apple makes amazing products with good quality and a natual ease of use that many companies should strive to copy.

The thing is I like Android more escpecialy for smart phones. My Moto Droid is by far the best phone I have ever owned, and I hope to have an Android phone for many years to come.

on the other hand, i'd say most people today would agree with byteware's claim that "by definition implementation can not be innovation" - words do evolve and that particular word has been force fed to us in the exact same context quite a lot in recent years

It's unfortunate that Creative did 0 commercials for their device. If they had at least 1, it would have helped spread the word about their great-sounding mp3 player.

Anyways... KUDOS to you for having a Creative Zen. :) My closest friends and I all got the Creative Zen Vision:M when there was the iPod Video just to shove it up their a**es. We were basically the only 3 in the entire school who had anything but an iPod.

Even in high school right now, it is so cool to have an iPhone 3GS (and I'm sure it will be even more when the iPhone 4G) comes out. If you don't have it, then you're not part of the "cool crowd".
I too have a Creative Zen (Microphoto) and still use it daily. The main sellnig point for me over an ipod were the fact it had a radio and you can drag and drop. The need to sync everything through a piece of software like iTunes really puts me off (I tried to load a file onto my other half's ipod when she first got it - it went onto the drive but couldn't be played).

A radio is a good example of something that every device has except Apple right up from the smallest pen drive mp3 stick.

At least the people who DECIDE to get a device like the HTC Incredible or HTC EVO 4G will have known better and actually made the decision for themselves and not by influence from friends.
Exactly, at least those of us with droids, nokias, samsungs etc have actually gone out, researched, shopped around and found the best for us rather than just plump for the easy option of the one that's constantly promoted on every TV programme.

In fact on that last point, the more prominence and hype something gets the less inclined I am to buy it

It made me chuckle that Apple or rather Jobs said that even though Google has chosen to challange (and challange very well) Apple (not just apple but you get my point) in the smarthpone market there's no need to be impolite (or something to that effect)

And then go on to produce adverts which have an arrogence beyond compare, ban google from iAds and still spew words like magical, innovative and revolutionary in the face of the development of Android software and hardware just shows Apple as a childish company whose only response to a strong challanger is to put its fingers in its ears, scream and act like nothing is happening in its perfect world where its the best.

YES i am glad that Apple and the iPhone are in the market it has made android a better product, but as a company they just act like the most arrogant jerks in the world with no reason, to their customers, their partners and their competitors.

Apple could be a very good product if it wasn't for the over inflated egos of the heads of the company, after all how can they justify charging so much more for a device that isn't in a league of its own

Oh with the advances in Android... it's quickly heading toward a league of it's own.... and not in a good way.

Or the fact that consumer reports can't recommend it:

Consumer Reports Electronics Blog: Lab tests: Why Consumer Reports can't recommend the iPhone 4

Surely yet another black eye for Apple.
Sooner or later that armor of fanboys protecting their church of jobs will be penetrated.

Unless the facade is beginning to crack here....

And now this...

Apple Deleting Any Mention Of Consumer Reports Findings From Support Forum Threads? - The Consumerist

You know, we haven't heard from Alieno since Consumer Reports rated the iPhone 4 as "Do Not Buy".

The Consumer report confirmed a hardware default and offered a remedy (using a case) and stated that atm, they could not stand behind the iphone 4.

However, comsumer report also rated the iphone 4 as the "best smartphone on the market" , placing it well above the htc evo.

Again, it appears as though only some people are experiencing these issues, and if some people have an iphone 4 that is a lemon, then apple should take care of it.

Sent from my IPhone 4.

... they could not stand behind the iphone 4.

... also rated the iphone 4 as the "best smartphone on the market" ...

Sounds like they're still up to the idiocy that made me stop putting any stock in their reviews several years ago. They tested a domestic car vs an import (can't remember which ones anymore) and right down the line in every individual category the domestic had the same score or higher. In no category was the import rated higher. Their total score however had the import rated higher.

Something is amiss there.
They won't recommend it but it's the best?
Huh?

I have yet to find the page where they say that but it's being widely reported.

Too bad Apple is working overtime to censor it.
