Honestly, the innovative thing was the user interface I guess thats subjective as well but I am not the only person that felt that way by a long shot, apple saw a gap in the market and went for it, that's it, but it payed off and was a damned innovative interface that was intuitive and effective and all other phones were left playing catchup, sure there was other things left out but that doesn't mean it wasn't innovative.
In the way that the first mom put jelly on a peanut butter sandwich, then yes Apple was innovative ... and they even cut the crusts off. However if you are going to play the popularity card, one could argue that Apple is still playing catchup with RIM and Symbian who continue to dominate the smartphone market, even in light of Apple's great success. Of course they are all developing using different business models and so far they seem to be successful for all involved, including Google, given Android's growth rate. If we can get beyond the subjective semantics of 'intuitive' and 'effective' as well as 'innovative', the success of the iPhone design, marketing and packaging (Apple's greatest strengths) in combination with decent QC and good customer service. I applaud their success.
I have read far more positive than negative reviews, maybe that was just chance, but the other guy was suggesting that the majority of reviews are negative, I don't think that is true.
If everyone can get past the superlative anecdotal statements and learn to put things in perspective, then we can have a reasonable discussion. You have probably read more positive results because you are most likely drawn to those types of reviewers and the organizations they write for. The other guy is most likely prone to read sites that are critical of Apple. The blogs are awash with references both positive and negative, but where the original, the 3G, and the 3GS were met with only petty sniping, there seems to be several issues with the iPhone 4 that more credible reviewers seem to find newsworthy. Perhaps it's simply the growth of Apple that makes them a bigger target to the media or it's a reaction to the way Apple's PR has dismissed the critics, but I am saying that there are markedly more negative comments about this device then there have been with previous major releases from Apple.
Please don't insult me, I'm not stupid, I don't think I am massively influenced by apples marketing, I don't want an iPhone. I did mean that in my experience it is smoother, don't try to imply that a simple omission is indication of poor thinking.
My apologies if my comment was perceived as a personal insult. I was speaking to iPhone proponents who regurgitate generalities as fact without support or room for rebuttal. Your comment's omission is the exact thing I was criticizing as it does appear to be a statement of fact rather than an opinion.
However I have tried them both and I do think the iPhone is a smoother experience, ok I accept that's a pretty vague term, but what I really mean is the interface is easier to use, more intuitive and simpler (not neccecerily by a long shot especialy with recent android phones). And you know what? That's largely because it is a simpler phone, it doesn't have a lot of the features newer android devices do, however it has far and away enough features for the average user which brings me to your next comment.
"In your opinion", please. Especially due to the volatility of this topic, it is essential not to misrepresent opinion as fact. Truth be told, most users would be perfectly happy with the features of a 'dumb' phone.
I don't disagree, I like the ability to customise my phone, which is why I want an android, but it does come at a cost of ease of use, I'm not saying the iPhone is simply objectively better than the competition I'm saying that calling it garbage or a "kids toy" is stupid, yeah the advertising from apple is obnoxious, what advertisements aren't? Doesn't mean you (not specifically you but the "iphone is garbage"/"just a toy" crowd) have to respond in kind.
Honestly, Apple counts on the response. It keeps this kind of discussion going long after their expenses have ended -- it is calculated and deliberate (this is 25 years of major market advertising experience speaking here). The worst thing that could happen is for nobody to care one way or the other.
