Will 2.3 gingerbread come in the updates on moto droid x? Because right now I am running Android OS 2.2.1
There ya go.... Batman himself answered your question. Now it can be put to rest forever.
The answer is yes....it's the last update the droid x will receive...

Where does it say that Gingerbread(2.3) will be the update for the Droid X? What about Icecream Sandwich(2.4)?
I can believe it to be the last update the original Droid will get, but definitely not the X.
I spoke to a Verizon rep in Tech Support two days ago...he also owns a DX...seemed fairly knowledgeable...he assured me the DX would get gingerbread...and that would be the last update that the DX would receive...just passing the info along...
by the way, I'm really alfred...
If 2.3 really is the last we will see, then Moto better unlock the damn bootloader so those of us who signed a 2 year contract won't be stuck at 2.3 when 2.4+ comes out.
How is it Motorola's fault or responsibility that you signed a two year contract with Verizon?
We need to ask what is a reasonable time for a phone to be supported?
I understand both sides of the argument, here's my take.I find most of your post to be pretty reasonable and I agree with a lot of it.
However, I still think it's important to distinguish the supplier of the hardware and the software from the carrier of our wireless service. The fact that Verizon will subsidize the phone over 2 years because you will pay them a monthly fee has nothing to do with Motorola supporting the device's feature upgrades for that time.
I think it's unreasonable to say things like, "well I signed a contract, so they better support it."
Mototrola is end-of-lifeing the DX in march, and will not be updating it after that. That was my understanding anyways. Besides, I doubt if any updates beyond 2.3 will be able to run on the DX anyways. But its all speculation now, nothing official. And no, a 2nd-hand report of what a Verizon tech support rep said does not count as official. Not even a little.
I understand both sides of the argument, here's my take.
Considering that the vast majority of handsets are sold with two year contracts, it is not unreasonable to expect that the manufacturer will support for at least that term. However, I don't think "we" the consumer have to worry about such technicalities, as Verizon has already committed Motorola to support the device for that long.
In other words, Verizon's only interest is making money. They make money by having happy customers who continually resign contracts. Poor support by a manufacturer won't be tolerated, and Verizon and Motorola work hard to ensure that any issues are resolved in a reasonable manner.
The definition of "reasonable" of course can wildly vary, since some may think that never getting 2.3 since it was never promised is reasonable, and others who think that would be unacceptable and want Moto to burn in hell.
From a legal stance, Verizon will force Motorola to provide updates to the device that ensure it's proper operation as originally marketed. That means bug fixes, even if past EOL, will still be delivered. EOL only affects sales, not future support.
So consider anything past bug fixes to be gravy. I'd like to see 2.3, but not counting on it. To be honest, nothing in 2.3 rings as a must have feature that 2.2 had.
On a separate note, I'd love it if after a certain time the bootloader got unlocked.
