Root ROOTING For Dummies

Nope! Do not freeze or delete it, unless you don't want to receive SMSs. Any messaging app requires the stock messaging app to work. Just turn off notifications in the stock app.

Thanks. I appreciate it.

Matlock you might add that to the not safe to remove/freeze list. Just a thought.

Hey andy! I am going to go out on a limb here, and suggest that you reboot your computer. And give a another try. Also, I know that HTC needs to be uninstalled, you just need the drivers from it. And be sure your anti-virus is turned off on the computer.. Try these, at least until one of the EVO gurus gets a chance to reply! ;)

(If nothing else, at least it bumped the thread for you)

Yep, I've tried all of those and still gets hung up on the 'installing unrevoked3 service'. I'm not sure what's going on but I believe I've crossed all my t's and dotted my i's over and over. Strange:confused:

Any other suggestions?

Thanks:)

Just to make sure, did you successfully install the updated hboot drivers (assuming you're on windows)?

Yep, after I installed the first time I got the error then I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers again and still get hung on the same error

And you turned on usb debugging and made sure you don't have any other apps that might interfere with it? Also, is your AV turned off? How far along is it getting? Does it reboot the phone at all, or does it get hung up before rebooting even once?

AV may be the problem, I will try again once I get back to the computer.

With AV on, sometimes it only goes to 'pushing recovery', other times it goes to pushing 'pushing root access ui' but usually it stops at 'installing unrevoked 3'.

Yes, debugging is checked and I'm set to charge only

Thanks for your help, I will report back later tonight

I have a general question about flashing and backup images...

Can I flash a ROM and then create a backup image with ClockWork for two or three of my favorite ROMs and then "toggle" between the different ROMs via restoring?

So if I have an image on my PC for Myn, Fresh and Vaelek - can I just restore to one of those images trouble-free and relatively easily or is that sort of thing not recommended?

Yes, you can definitely keep a few different ROM backups. I have a few on my sd card (Myn's RLS5, Fresh 3.5, VaelPak, Cyanogen) and I backed them up on my PC as well. You can do the same and toggle between them when you feel like.

runnning into an interesting issue, im still using the stock rom rooted as per the instructions, as it runs just fine with the tweaks i have made but i needed to call sprint the other day and when i tried *2 it wont dial and the radio just resets... any ideas?

Turned off AV, rebooted computer, checked and made sure android bootloader interface drivers installed, try to run unrevoked3 and just the same. It gets to 'installing unrevoked3 service...' then it hangs, then 'internal error: installing package failed'

Any ideas?

And you're just booted up normally, right? Not in hboot? How are you connected? Charge only? Disk drive?

just flashed myn's warm 2.2 and still have the same issue, weird

Yep, booted up normal, did a factory reset earlier today also.
Charge only

You wouldn't happen to have anything like pdanet or any other applications like it installed on your computer, would you? Also, did you say you uninstalled HTC sync? Sometimes you need to install it first, then uninstall it. Also, you are using the latest version or unrevoked, right?

I had both pda net and HTC sync installed, I uninstalled them after updating drivers in hboot. I installed HTC sync and then uninstalled again. No change.

I'm trying to use the most recent version of unrevoked 3

YEAH! Woo Hoo!

Bought my Evo in October. Was sure that I would never ever want to root it. But, 3 months of crud made it get really slow and unresponsive requiring a reboot every couple of days.

So, after a ton of reading, I made up my mind to root it. Matlock's is, by far, the best laid out, least intimidating step-by-step guide to rooting and flashing for newbies. My original plan was to just root it, install Titanium backup on it, backup everything, do a a factory reset and just restore the apps and settings I want - since I really do like the Sense UI.

The rooting bit was anticlimactic - took less than 5 minutes end to end. Smooth as silk and easy as pie. Followed Matlock's steps in the OP to the letter.

Once I took my Titanium Backup, I decided to brave on and install another sense-based UI (Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo - based on the positive feedback in this thread and on xda). Flashing was a breeze. The ROM does seem snappy - but, honestly, I only see very few slight UI differences; I flashed its themed LauncherPro, but, can't seem to find a way to configure it.

The biggest letdown so far was when I found that I cannot restore my system settings from Titanium Backup (things like my wifi settings - I had a few secure networks "remembered", paired BT devices settings - this is a pain to configure frequently, other tweaks such as ringers, volumes, etc, and the layout (apps and widgets) on my 7 home screens. I purchased the Pro version of Titanium Backup hoping that it would let me restore system settings - it does have an option for it in the Batch Restore section, but, didn't do anything; it did restore my apps and their settings, but, not the system settings.

So, is there any way to backup and restore the above-mentioned system settings? I know that many of you change ROMs pretty frequently; do you really have to enter all your system settings manually every time on a new ROM (I understand that with a NAND backup, you can always go back to a previous ROM with all your settings in tact, but, what about new ROMs and new versions of ROMs that you are already using?) Does Titanium Backup have a way to restore these settings? If so, can you please help me find it.

Thanks,
MediocreFred.

So... I've decided to start my own thread on this because I'm not sure what's going on:confused:

Baseband 2.15.00.11.19
Software 3.70.651.1
PRI 1.90_003
PRL 60675
Hardware 0004

Bought the Evo last Sat, decided I wanted to root. No stranger to rooting(long time Hero flasher), flashing roms, kernels, Dalvik cache, wiping, formatting......... Installed the android bootloader interface drivers, uninstalled htc sync, rebooted computer, downloaded unrevoked3 3.32, Ran unrevoked3 (also ran unrevoked3 as an administrator), uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled, turned AV off, still nothing....

8 out of 10 times, I get hung up on 'installing unrevoked3' service then 5 min later I get 'internal error:installing package failed'. Disappointing to say the least as I'm having the flashing itch again:p

Other than going the adb rooting routes, does anyone have any suggestions? (Spent a month trying to get adb set up on the Hero, no go) I've found other rooting methods here HTC Supersonic/Guides & Tutorials - XDA-Developers and all but 3 are now defunct.

Any help would be much appreciated:)

Have you tried downloading unrevoke again? A new zip

Yep, I've tried downloading with AV on and then downloading unrevoked 3 with it off, still gets hung at the same spot.

Are you suggesting to download the usb zip again? If so I can try that!

Downloaded a new usb zip, still nothing

What does 'Disable security on phone' check mark do? It then says unrevoked forever will not be installed

I'm trying to use the most recent version of unrevoked 3

Hmm, I'm sure it's something simple. This may seem counter-intuitive, but connect the phone as a disk drive. I think somebody got it to work like that once. I'm going to go through a few posts, and see if I can remember what this problem is. We'll figure it out.

Basically, there are three things unrevoked is supposed to do:

1) Give you a custom recovery image
2) Root your ROM
3) Give you full root (write to system) via S-OFF. Security is enabled on the Evo, by default.

If you uncheck that, you'll just get a custom recovery and a rooted ROM. Presumably, you want full root, so leave that enabled (unless you don't want full root).

What exact did you redownload? Did you redownload the reflash_package.exe?
