Root ROOTING For Dummies

Basically, there are three things unrevoked is supposed to do:

1) Give you a custom recovery image
2) Root your ROM
3) Give you full root (write to system) via S-OFF. Security is enabled on the Evo, by default.

If you uncheck that, you'll just get a custom recovery and a rooted ROM. Presumably, you want full root, so leave that enabled (unless you don't want full root).

What exact did you redownload? Did you redownload the reflash_package.exe?

Thanks for the info:)

I've redownloaded everything again including the reflash_package.exe and the android-usb-driver. Uninstalled the drivers again and then reinstalled. I have no idea if I'm doing something wrong or my phone is not rootable, confusing:confused:

Hmm, I'm sure it's something simple. This may seem counter-intuitive, but connect the phone as a disk drive. I think somebody got it to work like that once. I'm going to go through a few posts, and see if I can remember what this problem is. We'll figure it out.

Ok, I will give that a try.

Seems silly to post in 2 threads, should we continue to do so or should I stay in this thread?:)

Is that farther that it got before or did it not get that far last time? Did it ever reboot?

It sometimes hangs at pushing recovery, then terminated. For the most part it goes to installing unrevoked3 service, then internal error. So I try running unrevoked again and that's where it hangs

The phone has never rebooted

Are you able to connect the phone to the computer while it's booted up normally? You have to install the hboot drivers, which it does need when in hboot, but what happens when you just connect the phone while in Android? Are you able to browse the sdcard when in disk drive mode? You should probably disable that option when trying unrevoked again, though. It was just a swag. Also, do you have the ability to try on a different computer? It sounds like something there is interfering with the process.

If you power on while holding volume down. What do you see at the top of that white hboot screen. S-on or s-off.

Silly question...but where did you get your reflash zip? From unrevoked.com? And make surebyou got the one for evo

Yep, I can browse through my sd card when I mount, I transfered all my pictures, TB txt for the pro version, bar codes for for Key Ring and everything works perfect

Yep, turned off phone, went to hboot usb plug, installed android bootloader interface drivers.

I tried running unrevoked before with disk drive and got hung up at the same place.

Nope, no other computer I can try on.:(

S-ON
hboot-2.10.0001

Yep, I got the reflash from unrevoked and the reflash.exe recognizes that the phone is an EVO 4G

I'm going to laugh if that actually works. (I do remember that working for somebody once).

Nope nothing, I rebooted phone, drivers were installed and still nothing! Oh well, looks like I'm going to look into other root methods!

Thanks for the help, I wish I/we could figure this out, so damn frustrating:(

When I rooted my Hero, I had similar issues, but after root.....:D:D:D

Sent you a PM. I have a (potentially stupid) idea for something I've been meaning to try.

You should now see something like this when it fully loads.

s-off is in green letters on bootloader... does it matter?

How big of a deal is it if I accidently left evo plugged in to my computer I then unplugged when I saw the notice while doing the backup, what damage could have been done and how do I check fot it?

runnning into an interesting issue, im still using the stock rom rooted as per the instructions, as it runs just fine with the tweaks i have made but i needed to call sprint the other day and when i tried *2 it wont dial and the radio just resets... any ideas?

Same here. I've run warm 2.2, calk's, CM 6.1 and 7. Can't dial *2 on any.

I was going through your list of apps that are ok to freeze and I don't see on there where it's ok to freeze the stock messaging app, if I am using handcent SMS. I assume it's ok to freeze/uninstall that? I would assume freeze would be better?

Just thought I would give Handcent a try, but I hate hearing my notifications twice.

Thanks.

I run chomp SMS. Go into the stock SMS' settings and uncheck notifications. That's why your getting 2 notifications.....just saw that you did. woops

You need to install sprint zone. Most ROMs that have it removed, with all the removed apks in a folder on the sdcard. It'll be named something different based on whatever ROM it is.

I deleted all of those. No biggie I have the main 800 number saved to contacts but good to know why. Thanks

This may have been asked already and I just didn't see it, but if I root my phone and something happens to it where I have to unroot it, will I be able to use my warranty/ insurance from Sprint for a replacement without any issues from them, or will they be able to tell if its been rooted before?
