Yeah you can just flash the pc36 like we did for yours it will overwrite clockwork mod.

I tried everything mentioned above: factory reset twice, used different versions of unrevoked 3.21 and 3.32, used charge only and disk drive connection, combinations of all of them...and it still not work....just firmware too new...
USB debugg is on...
I have no antivirus neither computer or phone, win XP...

did you accept the latest ota? what is your hboot?

This seems like a really helpful forum. I've been trying to root my HTC Evo 4G from Sprint for over 6 hours... I think I need some help at this point!
Like the poster above, I've done a factory reset, used both versions of Unrevoked, used charge only and disk drive modes, and various combinations of all of the above. I get the "firmware too new" in the new version of Unrevoked, and in the older version, it says that rooting was unsuccessful, this happens sometimes, and please try again. Which I did, vigorously, many different ways.
Settings: USB Debugging is on. This is what I see in boot menu:

I vaguely understand that S-On.. but Unrevoked Forever says you can't use it to turn S-Off unless you've already rooted the phone.
I'm on software number: 4.22.651.2
I also installed the suggested HBOOT drivers for a windows user, and that was successful. I'm running Windows 7, 32-bit, and have access to a Windows 7 64-bit machine if that would help.
Earlier in the day, I tried with SimpleRoot, then read all 78 pages in their forums to discover that my software number puts on a newer OTA than SimpleRoot was meant to handle. The end of the forum sends everyone over to Unrevoked (all fresh hope!).
If it helps, I just picked up this phone from the Sprint store 2 days ago, fresh out of the box. I assume that the March 8th, 2011 I'm seeing in my boot menu is the last time the phone was updated.
I understand enough to realize what I'm doing, but not enough to try new fixes out of the box. I could really use some advice.

unfortunately you will have to wait as you have the latest hboot and software version that comes with the latest gingerbread ota. currently there is no exploit for hboot 2.16 yet. however, please keep checking back here. there will be a sticky with instructions on how to root the current hboot.

and who knows when. all i know is that they are working hard to find a new exploit. i think the last ota it was about a month before a new exploit was found. but how knows what htc has done with this new hboot.
For what its worth... I'm rooting two EVO 4Gs right now. They have the exact same firmware on them. All details of these phones are identical. The first one rooted just fine through Unrevoked. The second one wouldn't go and gave the error of the firmware being too new.
I downloaded the HBOOT driver again and reinstalled it. The next shot with Unrevoked worked like a champ on the second phone. So before you do a factory reset, just double check the HBOOT driver and maybe reinstall it. That may fix the issue.

I tried all of those things as well. This is my second Evo 4G and the first one rooted with ease using this video. However, downloading apps was slow as hell out of the box, and after rooting was basically a no-go and trying to update the firmware/software gave me a roaming triangle with an exclamation point so I got a new one. This one also was also slow downloading out of the box, but worked perfect with a complete update of the profile/firmware/software. Downloads in an instant. I was reluctant to wipe this evo to root it because I didn't want to lose the functionality like I had with the first. However, after trying everything else, I did, and still no luck. I still get the 'firmware too new' error. I really just want to get rid of bloatware and have adfree. I'm not too concerned with anything else, mod wise. Can anyone help a sister out?

question, so i reflashed to accept the ota update, but my phone still says s-off? did i do anything wrong?

Did you flash the s-on tool before flashing the RUU?
Why did you unroot to accept the OTA? We have the rooted version(same as OTA expect you don't have to unroot to get it)
this second evo, does it have the gingerbread update? what is your hboot(power off then press and hold power+vol down)? if it has the gingerbread update and you have hboot 2.16 then you will have to wait until an exploit is found for your hboot.

I don't know what the gingerbread update is, but yeah I have hboot 2.16

You will not be able to root that hboot version yet. They are trying to find the exploit that will allow us to root it but have not found it yet. Keep checking back here. You will know when it is found.

Okay so I haven't rooted yet, and I just got the gingerbread system update. Do I install it? In the future once I've rooted, do I avoid system updates?
most of the time when we get an update, htc will also update the hboot(booloader). the current exploit makes use of a hole in the hboot. and by updating the hboot, that hole is then closed up. so do not install it otherwise you will have to wait for an exploit to be found as the update inlcudes a new hboot. if you are still on 2.2, you can still root it. just read the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html guide. and you will be rooted in no time.

If you are still on 2.2 with an hboot of 2.10 or lower then you can still root your phone. If you want to have it updated to the latest stock OTA release, then after you are rooted you can flash the current stock rooted rom and the radio updates if you want to. These rooted versions will not update your hboot version and possibly cause you to loose root.

are you on a work server or network? usually that comes up when you are not allowed access to certain websites.
