What phone to get after Droid?

We "old farts" on existing 2-year contracts are eligible for early upgrade starting 20 months into the contract (that's ending too, along with 1-year contracts). I don't know that there are additional discounts for waiting until the dead end of 24 months, someone else who has done more upgrades can answer that one. But rejoice! Your last early upgrade is coming up just in time, it seems... :)

i remember hearing something about that, thanks for the info

I am really sad that i most likely leave Motorola because they still haven't said anything on their policy on locking/unlocking bootloaders. If they made their devices a bit more friendly for the mod community i would stay with them but all i see on my android feeds is htc and samsung most of the time about new roms; i never heard anything on there on moto phones. I have to look for it myself which i don't mind. At this rate every new moto phones are coming out and the time it takes to root them i dont see how the modders are able to keep up with the rate they come out :(

also the fact that motorola still hasnt released a droid successor with out the motoblur is also less appealing to me, i wasnt thinking they were going to leave it with stock but just i was still wishing they did. And i know every damn manufacturer has their on UI to android. I just wish they would just android stock. And motorola is notorious for huge amount of bloatware. At least with the galaxy s II i will be able to have a bigger mod community with it. hopefully.

i just want to make a really good choice picking the galaxy s 2 like i did with the original droid it has been such a good phone to me since the day it came out never felt behind with the times as new phones came out till just recently i need more space, and a faster processor. and its going to be hard to let go the qwerty keyboard. And the major reason it has stayed this good for so long wasnt motorola but the modders and the community. Peter Alfonso, xda, cyanogenmod, the forums of many droid sites and of course this forum have keep my phone and me happy.

idunno if motorola announces unlocked bootloaders before the droid 3 and it comes with that then i will stay with them but if not then galaxy s 2 will be my next phone

sorry for any run ons and horrible grammers i am just rambling

lol

They won't. Motorola has already announced NO intention of releasing unlocked bootloaders until LATE 2011 at the soonest. That means the Bionic and Droid 3 will be locked down tight.

I'm quite over Motorola, at this point. Heck with 'em, IMHO.

They DO make a kick-a$$ bluetooth stereo headset, though... :)

btw can any one here clarify how does the 2 year upgrade works, when i log on to my Verizon account it tells me i am available for an upgrade on 6th of july but my contract isn't over till the 6 of November. Is like a smaller discount at first or how does this work?

As Chief pointed out, we have one last 20 month upgrade, or early upgrade. The last time I did this, I was charged an early upgrade fee of either $20 or $35 (can't remember). The benefit to waiting is not paying that charge.

I am pushing my Droid until last day of NE2 contract and getting either the Bionic or the Samsung Function (Galaxy S II). Unless something better is announced.

Another benefit of waiting is I think there is 1 more level of price drop if you actually wait. My wife recently upgraded and I think by waiting until her actual upgrade time Verizon offers a better price. Do the early upgrade, and the price is not as good.

BTW, in the end my wide upgraded via Amazon and paid no tax, free ship, NO activation fee and got a smoking deal on the Dinc2

VZW got rid of the "early upgrade" where it was possible to upgrade after 13 months on a 2 year contract, you just wouldn't have gotten the NE2 discount. The 20 month upgrade on a 2 year contract hasn't changed.

That might have been what it was. I came to Verizon in Sept of '08 and being the account holder on a family plan, I was able to get an early update when the Droid launched in Nov of '09.

With Motorola unlocking their bootloaders I wonder if the Bionic would phone to consider against the Function? What about waiting for the Nexus Prime if it does come to Verizon?

If the Bionic is unlockable out of the box, I'm pretty sure it'll be what I wind up with. And if the Function isn't 4G, which we have no indication that it will be, then that makes the likelihood of my buying a Bionic even higher.

I'm with you! But I will not buy a locked phone that I can't root to get rid of the custom gui. I want plain vanilla android, and would really want a CM or like rom with all the customization I have come to appreciate. And for the love of God, why are these phones being shipped with last year's froyo?

I'm really debating on whether or not I want to upgrade my Droid. As far as actual phone use, it's more than plenty for my needs. I never understood the desire to play games on a tiny phone screen, so the lack of horsepower hasn't bothered me at all with this phone.

4G would be a nice temptation, if they ever actually brought the service into my area. I'd probably get to enjoy it around the time my next 2 yr upgrade comes around. As it is now, 3G is fine for me as I don't really download much anyway. And with the supercharger script, I can finally enjoy GB on the droid without much slowdown.

Guess I'll wait til I drop my phone in a lake or something and then see what phone is decent and who has the best plan, cause I'm not overly attached to VZW at all.

I am in a similar situation as everyone else.

I need a new phone as my OG Droid touchscreen has gone way beyond berzerk. I can only answer telephone calls with the device in hand. I cannot use it for anything else like text messaging or internet or dialing out phone calls. It just wants to take control. So I can only dial out with the bluetooth in my car and answer calls. What a bad situation.

So I am going to upgrade to the Droid 3 tomorrow.

I wish that it was a Vanilla Android. I wish that it was 4G. I wish that it was a Google Nexus Device. I wish it was a performance beast. I wish it wasn't Motorola after the problems with the screen on this one. I wish it had an unlocked bootloader.

But the real thing is that I need the keyboard for texting and emails and this is the best performing phone for that. Simple as that. I am ordering tomorrow.

Motorola Droid 3 Shipping with Locked Bootloader

yup i officially decided not to get the droid 3 completely disappointed on the fact it has that motobloat and it has a locked bootloader

I really wanted to like the D3, but just two things are really turning me away from it (obviously the bootloader is a huge issue). I'm pretty sure I don't need a physical KB anymore and if I'm going to have a new phone for at least a year or so, it needs to be LTE (I live in DC so the entire area has great coverage). Here's really hoping they can fit in an LTE radio in the SGSII!

Samsung Galaxy S II still not available in the U.S. – Motorola to blame? – Android and Me

if the galaxy s II does not come out for Verizon by the end of this summer i am just going to force myself to wait for the next Google phone, the nexus prime in fall.

Google's first Ice Cream Sandwich phone to be manufactured by Samsung, possibly dubbed 'Nexus Prime'

i just love stock vanilla android.

the galaxy s 2 was the only exception and if it fails to come out soon before more powerful phones come out then i am going to be pretty pissed. they are already changing the spec for north american gs2 and also they are come out with a different model galaxy s2 plus or whatever that has 200 mhz more to complete with the new iPhone, supposedly.

i want that ice cream goodness.

my contract expires on Nov 6 2011 two years after i got my droid. I would like to stay with Verizon and not switch. I am on second droid replacement so its like new, so i can hold off upgrading for a while. So sad to see Motorola not release a single stock droid phone :(.

I got en email from vz yesterday telling me I am eligible for an upgrade from my day one Droid. I looked at everything, but wasn't drooling over anything. The best thing they had to offer was the Charge, which didn't interest me. I told the guy I was looking forward to seeing the Bionic and the Galaxy S2. (He never even heard of the latter. Glad to know the salespeople are keeping up with the technology. But for $5 and hour what did I expect, expertise?) I told him I was disappointed that the all the hottest phones are going to AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint, and Verizon was woefully lacking, and reminded him that customer loyalty has been replaced by best product, best service, and best price, not flashy big red Vs. He probably muttered something rude under his breath as I left the store empty handed.

I wasn't going to buy either of the 2 phones I am interested in from this clown anyway. The saleman at Costco and I talked about rooting, roms, overclocking, apps, etc and I'd rather he got paid for his ability to speak intelligently with me about the products.

My OG just angers the hell out of me these days and I can't wait that long. I know I want 4G, so I'm almost definitely getting the Bionic. As I previously stated, I still have another upgrade. I can always hand it off down the road and get another device. That's if I enjoy it better, and/or can tolerate the locked bootloader.

You could always pay full retail for a phone that you like better later then sell the Bionic.

The Bionic's bootloader will probably be unlocked later as they're unlocking or have unlocked the Atrix's.

Yankee, you just made my day. We hae 3 lines - one phone is not getting upgraded, and one is getting my OG Droid as a hand me down - meaning I have 2 upgrades also lol....

Hell, technically I have 3 upgrades. Time to go shopping....at the end of the month.

Waiting for the Bionic, but have to wait for an upgrade. Bionic price is in the $600s. If it does crap out on you and you HAVE to have a phone, I'm sure you can find a Droid for cheap or someone who has something like it.

I cant believe how expensive these phones are getting. $250 - $300 with the upgrade..wasnt expecting to pay that much. No deals to be found so far. I remember when I got my Droid they were running a buy one get one free special....last year best buy ahad the free phone friday promotion. thats long gone now too.,...
