Root Tired of Waiting for GB root/rom discussion

I was a well-read total noob at this until two days ago. I used unrevoked3 to root. Flashed Clockworkmod Recovery, though it was 5.0.2.0, not 3.x. I pulled Business_GingerSense-v3.0.zip by way of here (make sure you click through the 'download' link rather than right-click it). Renamed the file 'update.zip', and all was good, ready to flash. I'd highly advise a nandroid backup of your newly rooted phone, and a Titanium backup of everything, before you flash GingerSense.

Thanks for the help. Did you reformat your SD card to FAT32 before unrevoking?

Nils 3.0 is great, it has sense 3.0 and makes a whole new phone out of the Inc but IMO it does run a little slow compared to what new rooters might be used to. For anyone who wants a stock GB experience, I recommend:

The black dialer and the rosie remap addon make this the perfect setup. Not trying to talk anyone out of Sense 3.0, it's graphics are superior but if you want to maintain max speed...just throwing it out there.

When you (and others) comment that Nils 3.0 is a little slow do you mean that it's a little slow compared to other faster roms? Or will it even be slow compared to my stock, unrooted froyo phone?

You say that Verizon has no choice and they can't (or shouldn't) admit there is a problem and the update was halted, yet they have no problem announcing that the update for the Thunderbolt was stopped for problems:

"It has come to the attention of Verizon Wireless and HTC that customers using the Thunderbolt by HTC have experienced a voicemail notification error with the recent software update. As a result, the update has been temporarily suspended while the companies work together to resolve the issue. Verizon Wireless and HTC anticipate the update being available soon; customers will be notified directly on their devices when it is ready for download."

Sure, maybe people haven't had to have their phones replaced, but if Verizon acted as quickly with the Incredible as they did with the Thunderbolt (which I think just started pushing out the update), maybe they wouldn't have such an issue... It's strange how communicating to your customers goes a long way, huh? How many less angry, upset, pissed Incredible users would there be, if they just said, "yeah, there's a problem, it warrants us halting the update to fix it". I know that'd be OK with me. I for one would rather know a little bad news, then be totally in the dark.

1. I think the difference between having to replace 2 year old EOL phones and asking the current TB users to be patient is massive.

2. You might overestimate the number of people that know about the update and severely underestimate the number of people who call support and get angr because of the incredible update problems .

Anyway. Hopefully they get it right this time.

IMO it's slower than Froyo or GB. The reason I'm assuming is the accelerated graphics in Sense 3.0. They look very nice to be sure, but it uses more system resources and our processor is only so fast. There's a reason we don't have it on our phone as stock, but the devs tweak the rom as best they can to reduce lag and they've done a helluva job with it. So what you end up with is a solid experience and if it's all you ever ran, it'd seem perfect. But run it against stock 2.2 or 2.3.4 (or a stock GB rom with Sense 1.0) and I can easily notice the difference.

Thanks for all the rooters who guided me through this process. Rooted and have Nils' Business Gingersense running great. Taking some time customizing with my old apps--but really happy with added functionality. Big step up from 2.2. For all those still waiting for the OTA, hope it's worth it.

OK, congrats to all of you who have made the rooting leap. Welcome to the dark side.
If you're looking for a fun change, I just flashed 666th Sense last week and am loving it. The boot animation is great and there's even graphics in the pulldown menu. (for those with a penchant for offending friends or relatives who are a bit too holy roller for your tastes you may want to check this out). No offense intended for anyone religious.

Which rom is closest to the real GB? I was unimpressed with Nils.

There are a couple out there at XDA that are ROMs of the official OTA. That is what I run. I have tried Nil's, CM7, couple others, but for some reason always find myself going back to the stock OTA ROM...

Pulled the trigger yesterday and rooted with the unrEVoked3 method. Was a very painless process. I flashed to gingersense 3.0-v2.3 and even though it's been a short time I've not had any issues to speak of and it's like a new phone. I'm loving the sense 3.0 interface.

Go to the unrevoked website and follow their instructions. It's quite simple. (even simpler with a mac because it's one click and no extra drivers)

Think that's going to be the method I use. Just concerned about drivers and my Win 7 64bit laptop. Almost pulled the trigger last night. Am thinking about a bigger micro SD card on the way home tonight.

I'm using a 16gb card that I've had since I got the phone and its never even come close. At one point I even had a couple of zips on there for the queue of rom's i wanted to try.

I know some people have an issue with apple products but I was concerned about the same thing you were when I wanted to root which is how I decided to use the work computer to do it. So if you have any possible way to get on a mac it would be what I recommend.

I'm getting there:).... maybe.....

Sure sure.

Still using the 2Gb card that came with the phone. Didn't get to pick up a bigger card today.

That's what I get for picking up a Windows 7 64bit laptop. Bad choice.

Hey folks, I've decided to take the plunge of rooting. Not because I want the OTA so badly, but because I am interested in seeing what else there is in Android Land. I am debating between CM7 and Nils Gingersense. I can't decide if the extra bit of eye candy and features is worth the lag some have reported. I'll likely end up trying both, Nils first.

I've rooted, using unrevoked3. Everything went perfectly there. S-off is showing, etc when I power up with the Volume Down Power button method.

My question is some are mentioning the Clockworkmod Recovery almost as if it is a separate step. That's not true, right? It was automatically done in the unrevoked process of rooting, yes yes?

If so, all I need to do at this point is back up my apps with Titanium, get the ROM of choice on the SD card, and go from there?

Appreciate the help and looking forward to some new Android.

Ok scratch that. I guess I was confused cause once I got to the white screen with text, you still have to select RECOVERY to get into ClockworkMod Recovery.

Mine shows it is running 2.5.1.2 --- One guide I am reading (http://androidforums.com/incredible...nogenmod-7-google-apps-after-rooting-inc.html) has step 5 as updating that through ROM Manager from the market. I need to do that first before I go much farther, I assume?

unRevoked loads an older version of Clockworkmod so go to the market and download Rom Manager and launch this program. In there you'll see an option to flash Clockworkmod which will update to version 5.02 (or something like that).

Then you can reboot into Recovery (Clockworkmod) and flash from there. Make sure to go through all the wipe commands (including the ones in Advanced). May want to do a backup before you do this though.

Definitely make a back up before you wipe anything. ALWAYS ALWAYS Always make a backup before going to a new rom.

And that backup could/would be the Nandroid method, correct? That as well as backing up my apps with Titanium.

A side question, where is the Nandroid backup file stored? On the SD card I presume?

Thanks again for the help,

Thanks again for the help,

Once you get ROM Manager from the market there is an option in there to backup your current ROM. I do it at least once a week, sometimes more if I get to making bigger changes. Yes, it's then stored on your sd card in a folder called clockworkmod

And once the nandroid is made go to the sd card through something like Astro and make sure it's there. Only once did I not do this - and guess what - it wasn't there!!!
