***Official Galaxy Nexus Pre-Release speculation thread**

Didn't we see something a few days ago with a Verizon and 4g/lte logo on the cover? When we saw something about ordering the battery cover maybe?

yea, there was a link to the rear cover from the samsung site i remember seeing that had vzw branding on it, but i still havent seen a functional vzw version in the wild. anyone else?

I kinda like the GSM colors better, reminds me of my aging Nexus One, which I still love.

Anyway, I wanna thank you guys for the entertainment over the past month. I basically answer phones all day and I've become bored of the Internet because of all the down time.

The picture in the post above yes, but the link to the other comparison was the same angle. But man, why did they ditch that really classy color combo of the GMS unit????

It's all a personal preference really. You'll find examples of people earlier in the thread saying it looked like a playskool phone with the silver and grey color scheme. Black would be a more 'professional' look usually.

Personally, both look rather nice. As far as 'looks' go, I'm mostly concerned about how the screen looks rather than a color combo on the outer casing. If the screen is great and the phone performs well, they could make it hot pink with neon green polka dots.. I'd just buy a case to cover it up. In this case, I'd have no problem leaving my GNex naked in either of those versions.

As a side note, is there anything you do like about the GNex? Seems like every post you bring up issues about Samsung radios, gps, etc.. while praising the razr (at first) and now the rezound. Sometimes I have to double check your post name/avatar to see if CK came back to give us Gnex folks a hard time.

i mean, its 9.5mm thick, my dinc is 11.9 and i think that it is pretty thin as is. IMO, and i have larger hands being 6'3", at a certain point a phone gets too thin and feels just weird

That's true that the SGS2 released first with Gingerbread in May of this year.

The release date corresponds to the HTC Flyer tablet also launching with Gingerbread.

The HTC phones launched in June (little over a month later) had GB as well.

Getting to the next rev of Android is a matter of corporate will and a willingness to work with Google.

I posted some days ago that ASUS was working closely with Google so that the Transformer Prime would have ICS at launch - both sides wanting to differentiate the platform from non-Android contenders.

To hear the tech blogs describe it, ICS hit the AOSP on the 14th and ASUS announced they were ready on the 16th - taking just two days to get the work done. (Yep, I've actually seen that lie in print, and ASUS marketing stood up and said, yes, you bet!)

It will be months before others launch phones with ICS because it will be months before others launch phones.

But updates are a matter of corporate will and support targets, nothing more.

And to take EM's points a step or two further...

The day that the ICS code went gold, every authorized Android handset manufacturer had access to the source code. We will likely never know what, if any, resources they dedicated to begin the process of compiling code but I think it's prudent to assume that Motorola, Samsung, and HTC all began the process of building ICS images (on or around gold release day) for their respective non-Nexus handsets.

Any quick turnaround updates that Google releases for ICS will likely be incorporated into the firmware images as pre-release updates... or as pushed updates at some point in the near future. By this point I'd be surprised if Motorola, HTC, and Samsung didn't already have ICS firmware images being tested in their respective labs.

Integrating the respective vendor UI's will definitely take some additional time to do. And with "detail oriented" carriers like Verizon, it'll take longer for them to come up with images that Big Red approves of. I'm still guessing that an ICS release for the Razr and/or Rezound isn't out of the question for January or February.

With Quad-core handsets on the horizon, handset manufacturers don't have the luxury of time right now. They each have limited software development staff's and need to finish these updates... or push them back till Q2/Q3 2012 so they can start development on the firmware images for their upcoming quad core devices. And since each has already announced that ICS will be delivered to these new devices in early 2012, they likely find themselves in a position where they have little alternative but to get these updates done before CES. After all CES will likely be the catalyst that starts the push for the release of quad core devices.

Makes me glad that I got out of the software development biz...

Great point. Pretty amazing as well as I already think my Inc is a nice thickness.

I couldn't stand it anymore, so I got a RAZR. Am I "renting" it? We'll see. If the GNex comes out before January 15, I'll go take a long look at it and decide if it's worth an extra $35 to me. If it doesn't, oh, well, I have a great phone that will be getting ICS sooner than later anyhow.

FWIW, I went back and forth between the RAZR and Rezound at the store last night for about 20 minutes running apps, looking at videos, etc. Two things put the RAZR over the top for me: The screen, while lower resolution, has much better color and black levels. It really pops, while the Rezound's doesn't. And the speed. They had Quadrant installed on both, and the RAZR absolutely smoked the Rezound. And it seemed more responsive, anyhow.

Good luck to you GNex'ers who are keeping the faith. I may yet join you!

I may be right there with you. I bought the Rezound two days ago, but I think I should have gone with the Razr for exactly the reasons you mentioned. The higher rez screen of the Rezound is nice, but the blacks & color of the Razr are immediately obvious and very nice.

With what's going on with the Nexus, I think it's entirely possible I'll stick with the Razr (if I exchange it) and just wait for ICS. After seeing the new pix of the GNex, I think the Razr is much nicer looking.

So last thursday when we all thought we were going to get our Galaxy Nexus on Monday or Tuesday I ordered 20 NFC tags in anticipation. Obviously we didnt get our phones yet but I'm excited to at least get these in the mail. $21 for 20 tags and free shipping seems like a good deal. Ordered the outdoor ones so I can use them in puzzles for some Geocaching hides.

And with Cyanogen pegging their ICS rom at around January 7, there won't be a huge difference if the SGN does come out closer to Xmas.

This is getting ridiculous.

This isn't entirely true. Like most people on the Droid X/2/3/X2 will tell you, CM on a locked bootloader phone isn't exactly everyone's cup of tea. The RAZR will be no different if I was a betting man.

On the Rezound side of things, they aren't even sure if they're going to be able to permroot the thing, much less unlock the bootloader. Though, precedent does say this will happen before the Moto device is unlocked
(never).

The point is, there is absolutely no guarantee that either of these phones will ever have a stable ICS port unofficially, and I'm beginning to ere on the side of them not and certainly not before the Nexus is out.

That all being said, if you want a viable ICS port and you don't want to wait for the Nexus, you're going to have to jump ship or hope and pray to whatever god you worship that the Rezound is unlocked and permrooted.

Keep in mind the new "pics" aren't really pics, they are coming from the 3D view that has been on google.com/nexus for about a week already. As such, they are 3D renders, not actual photos of the device. You aren't seeing much of any texture or accurate color/material representation in the 3D renders. IMO, the phone will look a lot nicer in person.
