That's hilarious!

I love wireless adb!

(not 100% secure, though...just had a thought: how awesome would it be to go to next year's Google I/O and scan for devices with wireless adb connections and remotely install something that would play the rickroll video? :D).

That would be awesome. You should completely do it!

I'll definitely run it through its paces fully stock, just to see what Google/Samsung have accomplished. It most definitely will be rooted, though, but I'll wait to run any custom ROMs, early on.

i want to root simply for the tethering ability. i have my incredible rooted and its no big deal because it wont get any new updates past 2.2

my hesitation with rooting the GNex is losing updates. Will you lose updates if you root but don't flash any custom ROMs?

Nope you will be good to go.

Yes - unrevoked was HTC only afaik.
And from what I've read about Nexus devices - yes, that should work.

Thanks, I can't wait for this phone to come out. It feels like the Incredible waiting room all over again.

It is like the Incredible again. Except there shouldn't be shortages of screens to cause delays with this.

I hope so, hopefully Verizon has learned that when they offer a phone with a new feature for the first time it will more than likely be very very popular.

Does rooting with Verizon phones give you free tethering without having a custom rom?
I'm want to switch from tmobile but the extra for tethering is the only thing making me reconsider.

Yes, as long as you download a tethering app from the market. Using the included Verizon hotspot will still cost you $30/month.

I have though long and hard about rooting Nexus, BUT:

The phone is brand new and basically unproven. That warranty sure is attractive to me... and unless there is a real easy way developed to flash the stock ROM and bring it back to the store in pristine retail condition, I think I'll NOT be rooting it.

Rooting gave me great power over my Beloved OG Droid, but considering that I likely won't be holding onto the Nexus for 2 years, maybe it would be better if I take a pass on rooting this one :)

You guys have fun and who knows? I may change my mind...

Well, returning it to stock and re-locking the bootloader should be a very simple operation ;) (which will keep your warranty intact).

There's a stock image available for the GSM edition and I'm sure we'll have a stock VZW image soon (if its not out there already).

But I am looking forward to playing with stock ICS for a while, but I will throw the root su/Superuser.apk package on there immediately so I can use my root-only apps and be able to install a busybox so that navigating around the filesystem via adb shell and a terminal emulator is a little less challenging.

I might play with custom ROMs at some point, but I do need/want my root privileges right away.

Cheers!
