Root [HOW-TO] Simplified Root + Recovery + Custom ROM

10. Flash the custom ROM.zip from sdcard and gapps.zip too if going to a CyanogenMod ROM

What does Flash the custom ROM.zip mean? In CWM-based Recovery 4.0.1.5 the nearest things is

-install zip from sdcard

then

-choose zip from sdcard

where I have Backside-IHO-VM670-01312012.zip and it says "choose a zip to apply"

The word "Flash" is never used and "update" seems wrong. I'm trying to follow things "to the letter" as recommended so I don't want to jump to the conclusion that update means flash.

Also, using the BACKside ROM in the original post is gapps.zip necessary? It's implied and I downloaded the gapps for CyanogenMod 7 but not seeing Optimus V listed would like to double check that's right.
 
To answer " what does Flash the custom ROM.zip mean" your installing it using the flash_image. So you can say Install or flash, same thing.
Your doing the same thing with the gapps,kernel,update,patch,theme,and sometimes the Bootanimation.
Choosing zip to apply: choosing a zip to flash/install.
 
hey there im not exactly new to the root scene with many samsung moments under my belt (lol, yeah it took this long to get a new phone and i went optimus cuz im broke) anyhow i followed your directions as far as i can tell and the root worked but after attempting to flash rom im stuck at lg logo... doesnt ever make it to boot screen... any thoughts? i know the boot will take for friggin ever after a flash but this feels like a freeze to me.

Another newbie question: do I leave it in USB debug forever now?

I do. Hasn't hurt anything. Although I guess it hasn't been forever yet. When would forever end? When I die? I suppose I wouldn't care then? :confused:
 
Pull battery.
Re-install battery.
Restore your backup.
Download a fresh ROM and Gapps (might have gotten a corrupt download because of a slow download speed)
Re-wipe and format.
Install the fresh ROM and Gapps.
 
Soo, I was stupid and forgot to download backside, I flashed gapps and greenmachine, but not the actual ROM. herp derp.

Waiting for it to download now. Hopefully it'll work so I can go to bed.

EDIT: Ha, like I'm going to go to bed when this works...
 
I just wanted to post to say that I carefully followed the instructions at the beginning of this thread, with no prior experience or knowledge of rooting, flashing or any of that other stuff, and it worked great -- thank you very much to the developers!

I only had one minor issue, which was that Flash Image GUI kept saying I didn't have root access. I ran GingerBreak again, did a couple of restarts, and suddenly it worked. I'm not sure exactly what made the difference.

I also got a little confused about finding the correct gapps.zip file, but that was because I didn't read the page closely enough to see that the latest version is device independent.

Other than those minor issues, which may well have been the result of errors on my part, everything seemed to follow the instructions very well.

Most importantly, it's now like I have a brand new phone! It's faster and free of all of the bloatware, and I keep coming across neat features of the new environment.

I couldn't be happier -- thank you all so much!!

This is almost word-for-word what I was going to say.
 
First post on this forum. I just wanted to thank Whyzor and everyone who has contributed to this thread. A great resource. I followed the instructions to the letter and successfully flashed BACKside on the first attempt.

Now I am left wondering why I didnt do it sooner.
 
So, I've tried running GingerBreak like 8 times & it has just stuck on the rooting process. I've rebooted every time before attempting once more. I refuse to give up!

I saw above that I should reformat the SD card & try again? It's the stock 2GB one. I don't have to worry about any default stuff on that card disappearing? I'm assuming it'll all come back once the card gets started in the phone. Just say yeah so I can proceed without worries. I really want Gingerbread now that VM told me they didn't plan to update.
 
Back it up on your pc. Once you format that card everything on it will be gone but you can move everything from you pc back to your card. however it should have no effect on it not working. It can take a free tries, uninstall it and reinstall and try again.
 
Put the uSD card in your PC and put the contents in a new folder you created, you can name it anything you want.
The Gingerbreak.apk needs to be rebooted on every failed attempt. If after 12 minutes your phone hasn't rebooted then you need to pull the battery and Re-install. Power on (this counts as a reboot). Sometimes it gets picky about the uSD card. Use the stock uSD card. If you get a error message then reformat the uSD card and try again. It might take a few try's but it will work.
 
Okay, so I'm at Step 9. Everything has gone fine til now. I hit 'Wipe Data/ Factory Reset'. It has been 10mins and the screen has been black since I clicked the option. Should I restart?
 
Wow I'm dumb. I had clicked on the Home key to select the option, thus hiding the menu. Selected with the Camera button and voila, PEACHY KEEN! Thanks AndyOpie150 & other random heads in this post. Lasted 2 weeks with this phone w/o flashing it. Hah!
