Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

Well, first, if you are trying to install the SU .zip file, you do not need to unzip it...just leave it zipped up:)

But that's the least of our concerns atm....what method did you use to install the recovery?
I assume you were in the process of rooting your device? :)

welcome to AF!!!!!!

first off mikey is 100% correct. we need to get recovery first. the red triangle means that you have the stock recovery which you do not have access to. you need to get a custom recovery in order to flash the su file.

and just an fyi never unzip a .zip file unless told to do so. if the instructions does not say to unzip the file then leave it zipped.

which method did you root your phone? are you unlocked or do you have s-off?
 
Hi guys, helpless cuase here. ive been trying to root my evo for a while now, but imsuch a noob that im losing hope. i brought up the bootloader, plugged it in, andmade the andriod file with the three downloads. But when i type in fastboot oem get_identifier_token. it just tells me its waiting on device. think you guys can help me out? >.<

what hboot do you have? what is your radio(baseband)?

let us know that then we can proceed further.

edit: oh and by the way.....welcome to AF!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
5.now we will need to reboot the phone into the stock recovery. power the phone off then press and hold power+vol down to get into the bootloader. on the bootloader menu select recovery. wait until you get the red triangle with an exclamation point. next press and hold both vol up and vol down along with the power button. this will give you the stock recovery menu select the top option to reboot the phone.

When doing the TacoRoot Method, after I press and hold the volume up, down, and power button, my phone automatically reboots without giving me a recovery menu.

I have unlocked the boot loader and have been running one of the recommended roms with s-on but recently used recovery to flash back to the stock rom from a nandroid backup.

I am unsure if I can proceed since I didn't get a menu option.

if you have recovery and flashed stock from backup you should be fine.
Is the phone doing something you dont think it should?

taco root only works if you do not have an unlocked bootloader. you will need to use captn's method to get s-off now.

LOL. Lately I have been having data roaming warnings for a brief moment pop up occasionally. They go away just as quickly as they come, and are replaced by 5 bars, which might turn into 1 bar. This is at home where usually I have had consistent 5 bar service. I was running MikGv3.11 and after experiencing it a few times i made a nandroid backup and then flashed back to a recovery made right after unlocking the bootloader. I thought made I should go ahead and get S-Off while I'm back to stock and messing around, also so I can fool around with flashing some ICS roms. From what I have read I will need S-Off to flash some of the beta and less stable roms running something other than gingerbread.

Signal issues could be carrier problems, With all the LTE updates issues like that are frequent.

Thats not to say yours could not be phone related, just dont get frustrated that nothing you do seems to fix it.
 
you should have no problem flashing ics and jb roms with s-on. you can't use any PC36IMG files with s-on or flash any radios......if you are having signal issues are your radios up to date? might be a good reason to get s-off to up date the radios,

So now that I've got S OFF, i made a back up with clock mod recovery. Aside from updating everything through the stock software, how do i update the radios?

Another question.

Looks like after getting s off, clockwork recovery only sees the backup i made with it and not my amonra recoveries. I assume they are still on my card somewhere, though if not i also made a copy of everything on my card (I hope-just mounted it and copy/pasted everything to a folder on my pc).
How do i get back to my previous recoveries?

for one thing i would ditch clockwork mod for either amon ra or smelkus as your recovery. they are waaaaaay better then cwm. on the og evo cwm just does not wipe well and has been known to cause more issues then you want......just my .02

if you want to update your radios you should go here http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/618281-list-utilities-apps-roms-kernels-og-evo.html. most radios are in the form of a PC36IMG file that you will flash in the bootloader.

if you need help with that then please let us know and we can guide you with that.

Is it OK to navigate Menu/System Update/ and update the Firmware, profile, prl, and htc software? Is there any reason to do that if I'm just going to flash a rom? I'm assuming not.

How do i get rid of clockwork? I see the folder when the drive is mounted, can I just delete the folder?

Looks like my backups are saved under nandroid so they are still there.

Just need to get clockwork off, then I can go back to the beginning and put amonra back on.

How do I get clockwork off?

if you go to the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html and go to the htcdev method. step 2 how to get recovery will show you how you can switch to get amon ra 2.3. it is what i use.

and never accept an ota while you are rooted. it could have some adverse effects that is hard to fix(most are fixable some are not). all you need to do to change your software version is to flash a custom rom. and you can always update your radios and such later. it is not necessary really.

this is the latest radio(firmware) for you:

congrats on the radio update.

are you doing the fastboot method? if so make sure that you are opening the command window in the android folder. also make sure that you have the boot.img in the android folder as well.

and fastboot usb is good.
 
hmmmmm double check and see if you have root permission. either download root checker from the play store. run it and see if you have root permission or not or you can run the su and see what it says as well.

if you have root permission then you should not have gotten that message. if yu are still getting that message then i would try the PC36IMG method.

my software doesn't match either of the PC36IMG versions. Might be why i'm having problems? I think captain throwback's method gave me Froyo, i am running Android 2.2 software 3.70.651.1

I'm no longer gingerbread anymore, so technically i'm in the wrong thread now and i guessing that's why it's not working.

Could I superwipe and then flash mikg and then i should be able to amonra?

yes, 3.70 is just a software version and you can change that by flashing a rom.....like mikg

ok if you have root permission then i'm not sure why you are getting that error. have you tried doing the PC36IMG method to get recovery?
