Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

Is this site current? I have an EVO 4g I'd like to root and hopefully install ICS or even Jelly Bean in the event that is possible.

The very first post shows links needing to be downloaded but the first three links are dead so I can't get the files. 1- adb.exe 2- fastboot.ext 3- AdbWinApi.dll

Can anyone offer help?

Thanks!

Just curious if you were able to get rooted or not.

in taco method after [--root] cmd phone gets to start screen briefly then reboots into a bootloop. I noticed a few other people having this issue, "No such file or directory," because phone never reboots long enough to mount the sd readable. has anyone figured this out? I've tried several times and always bootloop.

about to give up and try other method, obstinately.

Welcome jskull!
Are you talking about what happens after step 10?

yes: step 10 taco root command reboots phone then the furthest it gets is the main screen, like everything is working fine, but then it boots again into endless bootloop.

and the first reboot is a good boot: the LED indicator comes on, which should verify phone is charging and communicating with PC, but then bootloop has no indication / response.

I vaguely remember someone having an issue such as this, and I want to say that even though it is bootlooping, continue on with step 11 and so forth.
Like I said, I vaguely remember this....I'd have to look back a few posts  lol....where we at, like over 3K posts in this thread? wow :)

ya, i ran a search for "No such file" from 'No such file or directory' and found people with my same problem, but no resolution. that's the out-put from cmd prompt because the sd card never mounts, so it can't read the flash image or the other file. the # symbol comes up but none of the other part about daemon starting. just

c:\Android>adb_shell
#

and the cat command yields

/sdcard/flash_image: No such file or directory

are there any downsides to the other method, besides time? I know with other devices, bootloader method messes up certain options.

Did this step complete with no issues?

5.now we will need to reboot the phone into the stock recovery. power the phone off then press and hold power+vol down to get into the bootloader. on the bootloader menu select recovery. wait until you get the red triangle with an exclamation point. next press and hold both vol up and vol down along with the power button. this will give you the stock recovery menu select the top option to reboot the phone.

The Captain's method? No downsides to that. TacoRoot is just a different method to achieve the same results as using the Capt'ns method with HTCDev method.

If all you want to do is flash roms, kernels and have root access, then you need not get fully s-off as you would using Taco or Captain....you just need to do the HTCDev method and the steps listed there.

yes. screen reads

Android system recovery <3e>

Use volume key to highlight:
click power key to select.

Reboot system now
Apply update from sdcard
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition

then a phone with a red ! triangle

E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command

--------

I always select top [Reboot system now] and it reboots.

then it says something like

success rebooting by ~ oem something something

o.k....and I'm sorry if I sound like a broken recording of the steps, but just making sure on step 6....

6.connect the phone to the pc via the usb cable and make sure that it is in charge only, and make sure that usb debugging is turned on, settings>apps>development>check usb debugging, and lastly that fastboot is disabled, settings>apps>uncheck fastboot.

ya, I've checked all the steps and must have tried it about a dozen times (because I read someone say the bootloop is like a gamble), and everything seems to be working fine up until the root step. it gets to home screen then ultimately reboots into bootloop.

I wonder if it's a sd card compatibility issue? my card is not stock. I think it's a high-speed 16 gb (reads 14.89GB) card.

for what it's worth, I'm running win XP not 7, but I feel like the error is with the device: the commands are being sent to the phone, just not receiving --root command well.

hmmm, I'm running out of ideas here :(
Would you be opposed to doing the HTC dev method and then Captains method?

My friend Ocnbrze might know what is up but I can't pinpoint your issue.
He's had more experience than I have with Taco root.

If you decide to quit the Taco method, don't forget to do step 13:

Code:
/data/local/tacoroot.sh --undo

so I initially did the default factory reset but decided to try the option from the recovery menu. This time around I didn't comply with any of the initial setup menus: unchecked gps / share location, declined and unchecked sprint 'optimization' utility, skipped google account sync, and anything else the phone throws at you after a factory reset. Then I removed all the widgets and most of the shortcuts from the 7 home screens. Then I reformatted my sd card (again) just to be thorough.

Then I added the flash and mtd files back to the sd card, checked debugging and stay awake in development, switched back to charge only and checked 'Don't ask again,' oh and uncheck fastboot.

most of that was probably voodoo, but I think not setting up the google account and the sprint optimization are good precautions. I didn't see any heads up anywhere, but I feel like recovery menu factory reset was more thorough than the normal method: there was a residual, empty 'whatsapp' folder that was removed only through the former.

so la de freaking da woohoo taco party :smokingsomb:

Taco root is very unstable and thus not always predictable.....the safer bet is the captain's method IMO.......

So it is not your sd card.

Ninja'd.......lol

Thanx for posting your solution........congrats!!!!!!!

so did they get jelly bean working without sacrificing 4G or front facing camera? do you have any recommendations for roms for this old fossil?

but taco method is a much lazier and therefore better solution

do you have a safe link for ZZZVR_SUPERWIPE.zip? the two in the guide are down.

The link in the htcdev method works......just checked it.......what browser are you using? Just checked it in chrome with no issues.

If you can't get it to work then let me know,I might have it some place else.

Edit: sorry was thinking about the su file......let me see what I can dig up......to be honest it is not necessary any more........but give me a minute or two to find it.
