Rant Thread - What really grinds your gears?

I may have said this before, but I will say it again.

When there is a bike lane, bicyclists need to get the eff out of the car lane. I understand it is legally their right here in Minneapolis to take a lane, and I encourage them to (and do myself). But when going down the river parkway at 10-15mph in the already narrow two way street, you're endangering yourself and others as well as unnecessarily making more drivers pissed at cyclists. The bike lane/path is two feet away and is reserved for you and you alone. Use it please.
 
Well, I Restored Windows to before the latest update that Toshiba, in their infinite wisdom, installed.

Still borked.

My data is still there, but I am going to have to rebuild my boot partition.

So sorry to hear about your plight. We went back to Windows 8, just for my wife-to-be to be able to play her games on the Pogo website, courtesy of Electronic Arts... they seem to be moving away from Java, to Flash... but, Toshiba got us because of the price point... now, even the keyboard on our laptop is acting up... we feel your pain.
 
I actually hope Microsoft goes out of business. I just spent the majority of the past two weeks trying to fix my PC. I started having intermittent problems. They were easy enough to recover from - Just reboot Windows. I finally decided to run sfc /scannow to recover the system. This resulted in about 20 files that were missing or corrupted that csf couldn't fix. I then downloaded and burned an install dvd since my system didn't come with one. Rather than do a complete wipe and reinstall, I decided to do an upgrade in place. The upgrade started copying files. When it got to about 8% the upgrade aborted with a files missing or corrupted message.

I then spent the best part of a week looking for a copy of Windows 7 that I had purchased a few years ago in case I ever had problems. I finally found the dvd. I then tried the update in place again using the purchased disk. Again the upgrade quit at 8% with the corrupted or missing file message. I then started searching Windows 7 forums. I finally found 1 post by a MS MVP that said "That error is caused by a bad registry entry. Running Regcure Pro usually fixes it."

I then downloaded Regcure Pro from his link. After Virus checking the file I ran it and it indicated 40 registry errors. If I wanted to fix them I would have to purchase the program. I did. After running it, it took about 10 seconds to fix the problems, I then was able to successfully run the upgrade in place with my downloaded and burned install disk. AAAA RR GG HH!! ARGH! argh! :mad: :smokingsomb: :mad:

I then took the 45 minutes needed to back up the boot partition and the C and D drives.

I say again. I hate MS products and hope they go out of business! :eek::mad::(:smokingsomb:

Well, it appears that I have restored my laptop to a shadow of its former glory.

For the record, it wasn't Toshiba who borked my machine up, I did it to myself: before sending it out, I used efibootmgr to set the Windows bootloader as primary boot (that, along with an added "Tech" user, was intended to allow them access without giving them a chance to mess with my Linux partitions).

It worked in that it kept my alternate OSs under wraps, but it also kept me from accessing them as well.

Finally figured it out, though.

On an only slightly related note, I added a silicon keyboard protector to said laptop and it is definitely something I will have to get used to...
 
Glad to hear you've got some sort of semblance of a laptop, Dngrsone. I used a a can of compressed air on the Toshiba we have, and things have improved. However, another rant is mounting, courtesy of Boost Mobile. I awoke this morning to no service... no bars, along with LG's little red star to let you know that YOU HAVE NO PHONE SERVICE. So, my fiancee has a 12:30 appointment in a nearby town with good phone service, and, 4G. I've instructed my wife-to-be on how to update the PRL, and profile. We had a power-outage early this AM; I wonder if that's related to the tower signal... ahh, rats! I can only hope that my better half gets the phone PRL'd, and re-profiled. That should work. One can only hope, right? I'm also awaiting the delivery of a new lawn tractor, since the one we bought less than 30 days ago wouldn't even crank over after Sunday's mowing attempt... just one of those days, I guess...

Some browsers let you choose background. In Pale Moon it's under options.
Under content, there's a tab for colors. You can uncheck "let page choose colors"

Pale Moon is a clone of Firefox, so FX has it, too.

Watch out. MS just re-released that patch and it's still flawed.
