Official GSM Hero 2.1 Thread

htc will have a list of every single imei number for every hero
they'll contact each network asking which of their number are active and provide the update as so

IMEI numbers yes but HTC aren't going to ask each UK network provider to check thousands of IMEIs!

I used to work for Vodafone and there's no way any time or resources would be provided to assist a software update for a year old phone.

Besides, that quote from HTC says the notification will only pop up when connected to the internet. So that implies the networks aren't involved.

I don't think it will work that way, I am only guessing but i'd reckon the phone already pings HTCs server for updates from time to time. The phone presents its sku and if there is a matching update the pop up box appears and asks you to download it. Using Imei or phone numbers to track the update would not be logical for HTC....

That makes a lot of sense :)

Remember there is an option in the settings for "firmware download" which you can configure to automatically download. So a "call" to the HTC server(s) from time-to-time seems logical.

Bunjiweb, that's more along the lines that I was thinking of!

Redskies - this is why I was wondering how the magic would happen. Thought there would be a 'check for update' type of thing but I can't see anything like what you've mentioned in the settings?

Settings > Security > Firmware Download > Download automatically/Prompt before download*/Never

*The default option as far as I can recall.

:)

just wondering - would the 2.1 update be a slightly different update for each carrier IE: vodaphone, orange, 3. etc. and if that is the case i'm on 3 so i'll probably have to wait longer for it HMMMPH!!!!

I have a feeling that will be the case but you never know.

The last set of updates did seem to take forever to reach 3 network users!

Just spoke to 3, LOL call center in india:rolleyes: - didn't have a clue about any impending update from htc.
Oh and according to their records I am still using my N95 8Gig (which I upgraded to a hero 8 MONTHS AGO!!!) AARRHHHHHH:mad:

2.1 ugrade from 3??
two chances - slim & none:(

Hi there,

I'm in the UK and thinking of getting the Hero on 3 Mobile. I know it ships with 1.5, but is the 2.1 upgrade now June has arrived finally?

Thanks

John

Hi all!

This is my first post cause I became Hero user just yesterday, by accident :) My Nokia E90 died and since I can't be unavailable for too long I had to buy the first thing that was decent enough. Small town, not too many options, and I ended up with Hero. I had plans on buying Android based phone, but I was aiming at the Nexus One or something with 2.2. Bummer :)

But, back to the topic. I received an email from HTC regarding my question about 2.1 and 2.2 and basically, what they said is the same thing they said to everybody else. They did mention that the delay is caused by problems with adopting Sense to Android 2.1. Now, I don't know much about HTC offerings, but if they have single phone with Android 2.1 and Sense, then I wouldn't trust them to much :) They were apologizing for the delay and wrote that we will soon get a preparatory update followed by full update to

i'm on 3 they are the worst phone company i've ever dealt with, their aftercare service is chronic. don't know wether its me or not but i always end up talkin to some numbnuts from an indian call ctr who seems to be reading a script from an A4 peice of paper and can't deviate from the script
as for 2.1 upgrade when asked they were clueless, if i was you i'd go somewhere else
theres nothing wrong with the hero its a cracking phone but if you want 2.1 get a nexus 'cus it will be a while yet before you see 2.1 on a 3 hero

"They did mention that the delay is caused by problems with adopting Sense to Android 2.1."

why is HTC having problems when they've already released a phone with 2.1 sense, and if you check the forums there are loads of roms out there that are near perfect 2.1 with sense. so if the amatures can do it why can't they, i feel like i'm being treated like a pratt by HTC sometimes its one exuse after another

I just did some quick googling and it does seem 2.1 has been released for Taiwanese heroes. Which I think are GSM, right?

Can't be long until we see a rooted version released :)

I wouldn't worry about EU market (or any other). It's much easier just to roll out update than to support two different operating systems on the same hardware.

Big news. YAY!

@thevicman Thanks for this. Doesn't sound so good. I'm happy enough to go with 1.5 though. I'm also interested to know how BBC video plays on the Hero (their typical embedded video in news and sports stories on their news.bbc.co.uk). I've read that Flash Lite 4 can handle this OK (I've also read that Flash 10.1 will NOT be coming to the Hero at all, ever).

I'm basically choosing between a Samsung Galaxy Portal running 2.1 (800Mhz processor) or a Hero running 1.5 (580 Mhz & possible 2.1 upgrade sometime never  ). Both on 3 Mobile though ..... :o

Any thought anyone ?

thanks again

John
