Official GSM Hero 2.1 Thread

I'm running stock 1.5 version, but I can often be almost a full line typed before it writes text to the screen, which is annoying at times, but it's not consistent, which is equally annoying!

Yeah, this is the same thing I was getting at in my post, but it only seems to do it when I'm typing something into the internet, not for texts or stuff like that

How about you actually READ what has been written in this thread? Someone else has asked the same thing, and was promptly answered, just three or four posts above yours.

Even if someone doesn't want to trawl through this whole (quite sizeable!) thread, you'd at least read the first and last page surely?

The info was literally a few posts up from the request.

Anyway....

Hi guys.just a quick one.I may just have missed finding this.I am on a HTC hero in the UK on orange.I have rooted to villainRom and I am wondering if that when the 2.1 ota update comes,will the notification come up or will I need to be running stock HTC 1.5 thanks

You shouldn't have any problems with rooting your Hero, one of the users on here has even done a superb set of instructions over in the "All Things Root" sub-forum

yeah i dont really fancy trying to be honest. as i have this knack of cocking up at the last minute lol. if it doesnt come out soon il ask someone on here whos from newcastle to show me how to do it then that way i know it going to be done right lol

I'm horribly impatient and have been tempted to try rooting but it's sod's law that I'd try it, mess it up somehow and then find out that the 2.1 OTA update became available 5 minutes later!

It's the same standard information that everyone who has contacted HTC has received.

However it is STILL the same information that we've been getting from the beginning of the 'June' statement which I still see as positive for now.

Have been reading over at a Dutch site that they still seem to be expecting the update this week but no users have received it so far.

One of the users has reported receiving a pop-up message on his phone but accidentally cleared the message whilst unlocking the screen.

No, this is no joke, I got a black screen pop up with an OK button. I had to unlock him by accident and clicked away. Stupid enough "important and" update "the only thing I could see. Maybe an announcement? Sucks that I can watch ... not reporting.

Absolutely agree but it is in the territory where an HTC rep said the update would be out this week.

Could be anything if the guy didn't see the message properly but you never know. It's got to begin eventually....

Having said that, I suspect the first thing most people will do when the update comes is get it on the phone before going on forums to gloat!

If there's an OTA update, then you will probably need to be running stock 1.5 in order to receive it. However, there will probably be a download your service provider's website (and/or HTC's website) to allow you to install the update from your PC via HTC sync.

HOWEVER: note that if you install the new update you will lose root access. You may also find it very hard, if not impossible, to re-root your phone after installing the 2.1 update. Bear in mind this is probably the last official update we will ever get - if you ever want 2.2 (and upwards) on your hero youre gonna need a rooted phone.

My advice: wait for a pre-rooted custom ROM based on the official 2.1 firmware. Personally i'm gonna wait until modaco 4 is released.

Knowing HTC and their pisspoor support i am a little worried about this sentence.

This actually does not promise that i get it in June....It could even be 2014 before i get it and it would still not be a lie..

They have begun...As far as i know taiwan has gotten it and so they fulfilled their latest promise.

Basically i am at a point where i dont believe that we will ever get the update before it is actually installed on my phone and i would not be the least surprised if June is not the month where i get 2.1 on my hero..

This is a REAL longshot but I wonder if the delayed release of google navigation in Holland/Belgium has been the reason why the Hero 2.1 release has been so slow?

Obviously there must be plenty of people running 2.1 in Holland/Belgium but I wonder if Google didn't want to add even more users to the pile of people who can't use a well advertised android functionality?

Extremely unlikely but there seems to be a lot going on in the Netherlands right now....

I bet the real reason they did not release it sooner is that they did not want hero owners finding out that they did not have to buy a legend or desire because their hero would be more than enough to run 2.1

Now we are close to the release of 2.2 so now they release it because soon desire will be 2.2 ...

Will be interesting to see if they shaft the legend owners when it comes to 2.2 like they did with hero owners with regards to the long awaited 2.1 update.

One reason that hero will never get 2.2 officially is that it cannot run it because of old hardware and since legend has a slightly beefed professor with the same core as hero (600 MHz vs 528MHz) it would probably have to struggle like the hero.....IF that is at all a valid argument and not just sales babble for "we wont bother upgrading, buy a new phone"..

Everybody gets the update (and I think everyone can also do it OTA) but unbranded phones will get it before branded ones.

I got bored of waiting so ive installed the ROM based on the Taiwanese update for the time being, only annoying thing is that i cant calibrate the keyboard like you could on 1.5, dunno whether this is something to do with the rom or 2.1 itself
Im still gonna update to the offical 2.1 when it arrives for orange UK owners

OTA updates apparently started today in the Benelux with the preliminary update. Note that the hero checks every two weeks or so for updates. That means it takes another 2 weeks after this preliminary update to get 2.1. If you can't wait that long, there are tricks to get the hero to poll manually (just google for them!).
