Root 2.3 OTA Update w/ Rooted EVO vs an Unrooted Evo

What is TB?

Why is every1 after 2.3?

I guess I will update it in 3 months.
This is off-topic, but I can see why you'd ask. TB = Titanium Backup, an excellent app for rooted phones that can back up and restore apps, data, and settings. There's are free and pro versions, but the pro (last time I checked, around $5) has much more functionality and automation. IMO, its a bargain and a must have tool for root users.

I've been running 2.3 for a couple of months, and I like it much better than 2.2. Looks nicer, runs smoother, better menus, IMO just generally a more polished OS. YMMV.

I think it's safe to say that Gingerbread will probably be the last major update we'll see for this phone. I'd be completely surprised if we got anything else. So even tho I don't want to have to reinstall my apps and such, I guess I might as well because I do use tethering from time to time.

Bring on the rooted update. Looking forward to it. :)

Ther is no reason to unroot and accept this update guys...there are no major changes and it is VERY watered down.

If you plan on keeping your phone ...wait until the devs cook up a 2.3.? rom with sense 2.1 and or 3.o and flash that.

again I will post the "official" release notes

Ok, so here's what I did. I already had the October 2010 PC36IMG.zip on my sd card, so I just flashed back to that. I've lost root, but it reinstalled ALL of the stock components (recovery, radios, etc) and now I'm going to download the OTA for 2.3 and just await unrevoked to publish their update for the EVO and get root back.

why would you do this???? lol

would be curious to see if unrevoked works...I don't know that anyone has tried

I have heard that the flip clock actually flips now, so that's an improvement. Hopefully they patched the Peep app as well. DMs were severely broken with the last update.

If you mean official Sprint update, possibly so. But a lot of very skilled devs really like this phone. I would bet on a very bright future for interesting Evo updates.

Just my .02

It does...There are Rom's that have had that for about a month and a half though...

I am trying to save you guys the hassle of unrooting etc just to "accept this update"...but if you really really really got to do it then go for it. :D

I am curious why you would go to the trouble of doing that rather than waiting a couple days(if that) for a rooted version of the rom. There is no telling how long it will be for an exploit to be found to root(though the devs are awesome when it comes to that stuff!).

I finally broke down and rooted for the first time last night and this anticipation is killing me to get this update. I can't wait to get to the point where flashing new ROM's is second nature on the EVO so I can feel comfortable doing it when I get the 3D

It doesn't take long to get the hang of it. Welcome to rooting and your new addiction BTW :)

There are versions of 2.3 out already though none for the new wimax or kernel as of yet. Alot of us have been running 2.3 for months now thanks to CyanogenMod and some other devs. This will just be an improvement on an already awesome assortment of roms to choose from.

+1
In fact, + another 1.

Virus is already all over this.

I guess I just don't get it.

Agreed. Most of the Gingerbread changes are under the hood and, even then, there's nothing compelling enough to make me want to try it until it's possible to get it and keep root.

Root has been much more valuable to me than any improvements in Gingergread: nandroid backups, ease of getting the MSL, Titanium backup, etc. Those are more useful to me than any of the Gingerbread improvements I've read about.

Don't get me wrong. I think it's very important to keep the OS updated to the most current version (which is why I wish the carriers could be removed from the equation). But I haven't seen any security improvements that outweigh the benefit of waiting a few days.

so.. if there are roms out there with 2.3 allready.. why are rooted guys even interested in the stock rom?

I am rooted.. but have never flashed anything.. as i dont know what to flash.. and dont want to hassle with reinstalling all my apps.. and losing all my progress in games..

one more thing.. i did download and try to install the update.. got the exclamation point with the triangle.. so.. pulled the battery..and restarted.. now i got that ugly icon in my notification bar.. any way i can get rid of that?

Well I was really waiting to get an official Gingerbread ROM with sense, didn't want an AOSP ROM. I'm constantly looking over a xda to see if new ROMS are available, Theres one but seems to have wifi issues that I trule don't want to deal with. But feature wise (2.3, Sense 2.1, elements of Sense 3.0) had me attempting to download anyway but I just cancelled. I'm hoping Flipz jumps on it soon and releases a nice clean ROM w/ Sense 2.1 on top... then I'll be set.

Once I get 2.3 downloaded, I'm going to try unrevoked 3 and see if it works.

Thanks for volunteering to be the guinea pig, heh :)

I'm sure there will be others doing the same. But like what most people here are saying, for the least hassle upgrade for rooted Evos, just be patient and wait for the announcement of the rooted stock ROM. I don't think it will take more than a day.

patience is definitely a virtue here.

Flipz is already on this; he's already put out a Fresh GB ROM based off of a leaked Sprint test (although it's buggy). Now that the official ROM is out there, I would bet that Flipz is already working on a Freshed up version.

when a new stock rom comes out.. will i lose all my data i have now? games? stuff like that.. i have TB, but never used it.. should i start getting ready?

It's pretty much a rule that when you change versions, the frameworks change, requiring a full wipe. I definitely recommend learning how to use Titanium. Look into batch functions, data, and backing up your wifi connections and bluetooth pairings. I've personally never had a problem restoring app data and system settings from one Android version to another, but many others, some of them much more skilled than I and whose advice I often seek, have reported mixed results. It will be easier if you have the pro version, but it will still take some time.

It depends. OTA updates are designed to upgrade the OS around your existing data. So there's a good chance that when you flash the rooted version of this OTA, you DON'T need to do a factory data reset or wipe of any kind.

My recommendation:

1) do a NANDroid backup of your existing ROM, and use Titanium or MyBackup for a 2nd layer of protection.
2) flash the rooted OTA ROM when it's released without wiping your data
3a) if it succeeds and all your data is still there, and everything works fine, congrats!
3b) if it fails, restore the NANDroid, do a wipe, and flash again.
3c) if it still fails, restore your NANDroid and just hang tight; there could be a problem that is likely affecting lots of people, and it will get fixed.

I could be wrong, but I don't think I've ever seen an OTA of an OS version upgrade that did not wipe the phone, or a rooted substitute that didn't need one. Am I mistaken?
