Android and MetroPCS "3g"

I've had an Android phone since the G1 first came out. Seems to me that Metro's crappy 3g ruins the experience. I know the Huawei phones are low end but, they are better spec'd than my G1 was.

It says 1x but the salesperson said it was 3g. Just spoke to data support and the guy said the theoretical top speed is 200kbps but, average is 90. 200 would be bearable but 90 which I don't even get is sickening. Thought I had a provisioning problem. Guess my problem was switching to metro. Guess you get what you pay for.

Same here, I took mine in and asked about 3G. he told me that 1X is technically 3G. I asked him why the display model phone shows the UI as showing "3G" in the corner, and he really didn't have an answer. I know Metro is rolling out a 4G network next year, anyone know if the 4G's network will let 3G phones connect to it as 3G? (I know it won't be 4G speeds but will it at least be faster than 1X?)

It started running slowly after i downloading 2 app n den unistalled dem does dat have anything to do w it pls help i may have moved sum files where it says running services any advice?i have 3 days since i bought it :(

MetroPCS really only has 3G in a few markets. My guess is that you live in a city with only 1X not 3G.

I live in Atlanta, but it's strange, once or twice during the day I've looked at my phone and it actually showed a 3G signal for a split second. I don't know if it is a display bug or if it actually picked up some sort of signal. Or, if in my wildest dreams, they are installing the Metro 4G network which is supposed to come to Atlanta and they are sending out a test signal and my phone is picking it up somehow. :D

I don't think you guys are running the 3g network not 100 % but pretty sure metro is only running their "lte" 3g and 4g network in the texas area so far i do know atl.and fl main cities will be getting lte in the first quarter of 2011 or atleast that's what the metro tech told me

I'm in Miami, Fl and I was given very inconsistent info from Metro in regards to the Ascend being 3G. I was told it was 3G by an agent over the phone who then did her mojo to get it running but it didn't work; even though she said specifically that it was available in my area. Went in store and was told metro doesn't have 3G but "4G will be available real soon!" To make a long story short finally got a hold of someone on their SOS team who said "yes Ascend is 3G and available in Miami but I would need to be in a 'hot spot' to access it" I am not 100% but I think only the craft be the only phone to pick up the 3g/4g (whatever) every where

I got that "hotspot" spiel too. They were like "It'll be 3G in a hotspot!" and I told them I know the difference between Wi-Fi and 3G. I'm still waiting for the 4G rollout in Atlanta to see what happens. It was just so strange that it connected 3G with bars and everything two times now for a couple seconds.

There is some confusion about what 1xRTT really is. I found this article that cleared it up for me... What is 1xRTT?

Essentially, 1xRTT is part of the 3G family, however since it's much slower than other 3G systems (like 1xEVDO), it usually is described as "2.5g."

I've been wishing for a "true" 3G network from MetroPCS for a long time. I've been reading up on Metro trying to buy more spectrum and hoping they'll sign some kind of agreement with other providers to hold us over until the true 4G/LTE is rolled out. The weird thing is, I've read Metro has some EVDO markets, but, even in the Dallas, I'm not in it supposedly.

I have the solution. Program the phone again by calling *228. The phone will restart then after a few minutes 3g will be available. Had the same problem. Phone was only displaying 1x and after I reprogrammed, it displayed a3g signal and everything is much faster.

Note: If my solution doesn't work, call 611 and ask them to reset your service, then dial *228

This is on MetroPCS, right? If so, what city do you live in?

I did what you suggested. My phone completed the programming and restarted, but I don't have 3G (in the Dallas area). I tried talking to customer service, but they had no idea what I was talking about.

I live in Chicago. Then I think they don't have 3g in your area

This is my 1st new cell phone in many years. So, this this phone is super sweet to me. I'm only getting 1x in Clearwater Fl. Any chance that it should be better and the *228 trick will work

Cricket does the same. They rip you off when you sign up for 3g. You have to activate it manually

I have the Huawei Ascend and I'm in the Phoenix area in AZ. My 3G works great even up in the mountains. My carrier is Cricket. I had NO problem with activating 3G. I'm pretty sure the *228 only works for Cricket users.

The reason that 3G works so well for Cricket is that they have a relatively new 5 year coverage contract with Sprint.

Cricket raised their price on the Huawei today to 139.99 online. (same as the Zio)

You need to say you already programmed your phone and you have 3 bars of signal and they will reset your service and ask you to call *228 again for reprogramming and the 3g signal.

It worked for me. I called them two days after receiving my phone and asked for a data reset. They reset it and helped me to activate it. You have to dial *228.

I have Cricket and it worked for me but for MetroPCS it didn't seem to work
