Church Burning Holy Korans

I think it's appalling and disgusting.

The 9/11 attacks were no more representative of Islam than the Spanish Inquisition was representative of Catholicism. Do we assume the bombers of abortion clinics who murder innocents are representative of their entire religion? Do we lump all white people into the category of the Ku Klux Klan? There are extremists from all walks of life, all religions and all aspects of society.

Let me be blunt: this pea-brained little nothing of a man is not doing anything more than propagating hate and bad blood amongst people who are looking up to him to deliver a message they can follow.

It's disgusting and wrong and violates the basic premise of the message that he is ostensibly vowed to follow and to spread, not to mention the trust that his church members put in him. Jesus would never have condoned the idea of spreading hate and burning religious symbols, and to do so in retribution against an entire faith just because a few of its members are whackjobs is insane.

Like the Westboro Baptist Church, it makes me almost sick to share the same race with these fundamentally damaged human beings.

Not, of course, that I have strong opinions on the subject

Frisco mentioned the U.S.S.R....the Ironic thing about Stalin ...is well...in University he was studying to become a Catholic priest...

Anyway this whole thing is ridiculous anyway..besides it is a small church isnt it?

I don't know why atheists refuse to see the evidence of a deity around us everywhere. Flooding in Afghanistan, tsunamis in the Pacific and Indian oceans, earthquakes, droughts and volcanoes ... cancer, HIV, influenza, plague, famine ... homicide, genocide, extinction, pollution ... hatred, misery, intolerance. Yup, evidence of a supreme being who obviously hates us.

Either that or the development notes were leaked for the next PS3 game.

I find it amazing that a church of 50 people can affect the entire world for better or worse.

Well the Catholic Church today denounced the burning of the Koran.

Well, that's good. It's better than encouraging the burning of another religion's holy books.

Meanwhile, why did the Vatican join the news media in elevating a pathetic little Billy Sunday wannabe's stunt into an interfaith issue?

Fear?

We live in sad times. Sad enough without the huge flame fanning methodology of satellite "news" media.

Oh I don't know; they're that darned relentless, the more air-time they get maybe the more people will recognise religion for how worthless it really is.

It is not religion that is worthless. It's what some people do in the name of it that is a worthless departure from the benevolent core of Christianity as most know it to be.

That being true of Islam, as well, as I speak to Moslems in my community.

Once atheists get into government, all hell breaks loose and to an extent on a par with extremist religious regimes.
Change "atheists" to "atheism," and you might have something there. We have problems whenever intolerance of religious belief become public policy.
You're apparently unaware of the old U.S.S.R. regime, as one example, which imprisoned and executed Christian leaders, ministers and priests, destroyed their churches (as long as they were not "historical," meaning revenue-generating tourist attractions such as the big cathedrals), destroyed synagogues and ran Jewish leaders out of the country (many in Israel are from that era) and even went so far as to rename all cities in the country that had religious designations: Saint Petersburg became Leningrad, etc.

Atheism is the philosophical center of Communism; read about it and perhaps you'll get an insight as to why it always fails as a matter of government policy.
That seemed to be more about making the Communist Party the religion of the people than promoting atheism to me. Paranoid, insecure, power-hungry men wanted to eliminate any perceived threat to their system, so they tried to eradicate any ideas that conflicted with their plans. The names "Leningrad" and "Stalingrad" would support this.

The belief system of the totalitarian thinking leader(s) is not relevant: they'll use it to do their evil deeds, it's all throughout history.
Slightly contradictory to what you posted above, but I agree with this. :P

This is not directed at anyone in particular, but it's something that I find is often overlooked or just not understood:
Atheism is not a belief system, a religion, moral code or anything similar. It is simply the absence of belief in a deity. Atheists can be left-wing or right-wing, moderate, radical or anything in between. There is no code by which atheists must bind themselves, there isn't necessarily anything aside from this single quality that unites atheists. So grouping them together seems rather pointless.

Anyhoot, burning the Koran. Hateful ignorant idiocy.

This is madness.

On the other hand, shouldn't Isam / muslims be more tolerant, and understand that this is the work of a few lunatics, and not go all hell crazy over it?

There lays blame with the pastors, but there also lays blame with Islam / muslims that they allow minor things like this to so negatively affect them.

There is plenty of trouble / blame to go around.

If people on both sides would turn their back on it, the world would be a much better place.

It is the intolerant on both sides who the news items are about and, most importantly, where the quotes are coming from, and not the religious body as a whole, whether it be the moron burning the books, or the morons saying "death to America" in response.

Yes very true. Also very sad. People are bred to hate, it seems, in some parts of the muslim / islam world.

It's just too bad that while the Islams were protesting the burning of the Koran they were also burning the US flag. That sure doesn't help matters.
Like Steven said: "Quote Ghandi" if everyone subscribed to "an eye for an eye" the entire world would be blind.

The burning of books in this day and time with the internet and all i just don't get what it will accomplish,it might have had more significant meaning in the pass but in todays time i just don't see many folks caring.

Funny how "American Muslims" protest the burning of the Koran, yet fall silent when the American Flag is burned.

They protest their rights to build a mosque any where they please, yet have utter disregard (and disrespect) for the feelings of others.

Answer to the last question: They have $100 million and the "victims of 9/11" have to fight the government for benefits.

They claim to be "Americans" and hide behind the protection of this great nation's constitution.

Yet on 9/11 when it was their time to stand on the plate, where were they?

The British Colonist's fought against the Motherland for Independence on 1776
and again on 1812

During the first World War, German, Italian, Polish Amercans Answered the Call!

Again during World War II they would once again answer the call, this would also Include Japanese Americans who despite having their families "intered" fought with great distinction and honor.

On 9/11 where were these so called "American Muslims"? Nowhere!!!!

Why? because even though they would "verbally" condem the attack of "radical" muslims (which by the way I absolutely do not beleive there is a distinction) at the back of their heads they aplaud the attack.

Why because the United States represents something they can never be. A truly free nation!

Burning the Quran is wrong, this sends the wrong message and makes us no better than they are.

If those people truly want to send a message, they should petition the State on New York to put that building of that Mosque near the twin towers to a vote.

When two "rights" are at odds a vote is necessary to resolve the issue. This would not only be a shining example of Democracy, but would also remind these people that if they wish to live in this country they have to live, respect and stand with the rest of us.

Just my 2 cents - if its worth that much

God Bless America!!!!

Why can muslims build a mosque at ground zero? In theory because they have the right. Why can a church burn korans? The right is their as granted by the first amendment. However a death threat is a crime by federal law. So my question is are we governed by the constitution or what a religion believes? Under American law anyone who tries to stop them is committing at least one crime.

Beyond that I see no problem with this. I find that in the age of the internet those that are "offended" are usually pursuing an agenda. Let them do their burning thing, get it over with and move on.

Funny how "American Muslims"...
You list various peoples that have at various times answered the call to arms for America, against various foes, and you ask where the American Muslims were on 9/11. Do you not see, or do you just choose to ignore the obvious?

What is the uniform of those that perpetrated 9/11?

In all those other conflicts there was an enemy in a uniform, that answered to, and took instruction from a leader with a declared purpose, and an actual identity.

I would suggest that the American Muslims were the same as most people on 9/11, wondering what type of monster would carry-out such a heinous act.

IF the Taliban and Al Qieda wore a uniform I'm pretty sure that the same, if not more, American Muslims that presently wear the uniform of America (and likewise for other allied nations) would be fighting them as they do today.

I also suspect that if these murderous, scum had to wear a uniform, they would; a) have fewer volunteers(because they're too cowardly) b) would have lost and been beaten already.

...The right is their as granted by the first amendment...
I agree that both have the right to do what they want; but I think the difference is that the community centre is being built for a positive use, not to offend. The burning of the Korans is being done purely to insult and offend, with no practical purpose.
