Help Connect via WIFI problems

I'm using a DIR-615 router and, to my surprise, I've had no trouble whatsoever getting the Hero to connect to my network. I'm using WPA2-AES and I didn't even have to make my SSID visible.

Thanks, I'll probably go pick one up after work.

I set up my laptop as the gateway last night and did some packet sniffing. It is weird. The android sends out the request fine, and gets a response. However, for one site, the first packet in the returned HTTP data would be dropped (the one that had all the HTTP headers, response code and majority of the HTML). No idea why. The packets coming from the server would just start at the 2nd packet... And it did this reliably... everytime. It would also often send out 2 GET requests within a second of each other, not giving the server a chance to respond. Going to the same site would result in the same thing. Google.com works fine, no packets dropped, and it loads fine on the browser.

While doing this, I also saw the phone communicate with the Facebook REST server, as well as gmail.

When I get home, I'll see about posting the capture. If the DIR-615 works, I'll probably just won't worry about it until the update.

Alright, just bought a DIR-615 and I have NO problems now. Thanks! It now works at work and at home, so I'm happy.

I started conversation with HTC support about wifi problems we all are having.. The only thing they recommend is
Regarding the Wi-Fi issue, kindly follow the instructions below:
Please ask the IT administration to insert the MAC address of your device into the router.
Not working fo me...
Worked like a charm...I just put the mac address in the netgear router and "BAM" it connected by Wifi!!!! I spent last nite on the phone with the sprint people...yada.yada...they said it must be the netgear people...so I called them and they said that since my other wifi devices were currently working...it could'nt be their router....well I was just about to give up...and saw your post...I am also running Network Magic and it has some security issues...but I processed it thru them and "BaM" she's kickin''''sweet.....I installed the twonkey app and now my phone will play it's mp3's on the playstation 3 thru twonky media manager...sweet......thanks!!!

After trying just about everything, I found a simple solution that worked for me.

Hero has always connected OK before to both public and private networks. Upgraded router to BT Homehub2 and phone could not obtain an IP address.

Eventually I noticed that the router DHCP allocated addresses xxx.xxx.xxx.64 to 192. Changed the setting to xxx.xxx.xxx.1 to 192 and it connected straight away. Hope that may help someone.

Same problem as most and only had phone since Saturday. I can get connected to my router. Well my HTC hero(T-Mobile G2 Touch) says it is connected and got IP. Have got my mobile network turned off. So i know all connections are through the WIFI.

So i click a web page and the first few are fine and load up correctly. Then you click one and the loading bar takes forever and then finally the andriod web page comes up stating it can not connect to web page. Or if i click on andriod market i would get a message that it is not working or on youtube the cannot display message.

I would like to know if anyone has resolved this issue without having to fiddle with there router. Just by configuration of their handset.

Because like me, most people will be mobile and would want to try and connect to different wireless routers. And if you are around a friends house and there iphone connects to their router with no problem, but the only way you will have a chance to connect and use it would be to change settings/upgrading on their router.

I do not know if this is the best solution HTC can come up with to resolve the issue. I would like to connect to every wifi device as the iphone can. How bad does it look if i go over to someones house and say i can not connect to your wifi till they upgrade their firmware.

Does this not have a negative effect on the influencing people to buy the phone!!!! "Maybe i want an iphone or a HTC hero, but wait my friend could not connect to my routing using a HTC Hero. I will get a iphone!"

I will ring T-Mobile tonight and see what they suggest!

Hello

Here is a possible solution to your htc hero home wifi browser woes.

I had problems in my home wifi which cause my htc hero to be unable to browse web pages via wifi at home, but updating weather, checking mail etc. worked fine.

What i did to fix this was downloading an app from market called Wifi analyser, and changed the wifi channel in my router to one which was free.

I hope this helps!

Regards,

Same issue that many others have described above (i.e. unable to keep a constant wifi connection between my HTC Hero and Linksys WRT54GL (Tomato firmware)).

Wifi Fixer (available free in the market) fixed my problems, giving me a stable connection. Without it, I wouldn't be nearly as enthused about my Hero as I am.

Basically if you are having endless and seemingly unfixable issues with wi-fi and your Hero my advice is just buy another router until you find one that works, had endless woe with my Linksys WAG54G2, today got a new Belkin and works perfectly! So just seems that our beloved Hero simply doesn't get on with some routers!

I can see why some people will change settings or even buy a new router. But why should you! I can see no reason why I should if my laptop, psp, an iPhone and even my girlfriends LG crappy phone can connect to my router no problem and send data through it.

Well I added the WiFi fixer and it has worked for a while, but I will have to test a bit more!

Well just realised that the WiFi fixer app does not work. Once I lose connection the app just turns off the WiFi and then just hangs trying to turn it back on and you can not turn it on manually. Useless app to try and fix problem.

I'm not sure I entirely understand what you're saying, but Wifi Fixer doesn't turn off your wifi. It simply silently reconnects whenever the connection is lost or hangs. And it's certainly not worthless. It works for many people--including me!--who've suffered from the same symptoms you're describing. But there's no guarantee that it will work for everyone, of course.

Have you tried some of the other troubleshooting options in this thread? Have you changed the default phone setting (i.e. "wifi sleep policy) so that wifi remains active even when the screen is off?

Edit: Are you using Wifi Fixer Classic (manual reconnect) or Wifi Fixer (auto reconnect)? If the former, you want to use the latter instead.

I downloaded both. With the automatic one all I get is that ap is unavailable in the notifications. I check WiFi in. The settings and under WiFi I can see it getting an ip, then connected. Then it turns off and then turns on again. It does this in an infinite loop.

Turned off sleep and saved that option, but I still have the issue that under WiFi it states that it is connect but no data goes through the router after about a minute it so! I found that if I ping the ip that my phone has from my laptop, it will send packets back for a whole then it will come up that host is unreachable even though my g2 touch says it is connected.

Very frustrating, indeed. Try uninstalling both versions of Wifi Fixer and then reinstalling Wifi Fixer again (the version with automatic reconnect, not Wifi Fixer Classic). Then, open it and make sure that "Keep Active" and "Wifi Lock" are checked).

If Wifi Fixer doesn't solve your problem, I would recommend that you read this whole thread and, in a systematic way, begin trying some of the other solutions offered.

Good luck! It's maddening that this remains such a persistent issue on an otherwise great phone.

I just bought an hero, and im having some trouble with my Belkin F5D8233-4 v1 router.

Sometimes the phone connects well, i have internet acess, but the suddenly it drops.

I've been having a bit of on-off issues with my crappy Thomson router and I had assumed it was the router, usually after restarting it would be fine... for a while.

I recently went hunting for other ideas and I came across something very simple that I had not yet tried.

I have changed the channel the router uses manually to channel 3 rather than letting it automatically try to find a channel. So far I have not had any disconnections. I can only think that it must be because another local router was attempting to use the same channel or something...

So remember to give this a try first!

what helped me:
I'm using Linksys WAG54G2 and WPA2 security +MAC
the thing is that WIFI works only when I connect my android as the first hardware connected to the router. then I can connect all other devices. It seems to wrk for the past 5 minutes :)

EDIT: actually it seemed to work, BUT ie. market is only downloading icons and descriptions - the applications don't download :/

What seems to have worked for me is an app called wifi static, what it does is give hero an static ip adress to acess the router so no dhcp mess.

Give it a try.

I flashed my original H3G with MCR 3.1, didnt have much problem with WiFi, it was cutting off sometimes but never bothered much as it was rare..

Then flashed to a customised rooted ver of H3G, installed few apps related to WiFi. Suddenly out of surprise I was running to the Router, I had to restart both, Router & Modem otherwise it wont work.

Thought of putting Hero on only on normal 3G internet (switching off WiFi), its slow but atleast it wont break my router.

My Router is Belkin G - F5D7230-4, Ver 7002uk, I had flashed new firmware ver - 9.01.12 in past as I had problems with 10mbps speed (it was then sorted).

Having this new problem just baffled me, I again approached Belkin online support, I explained all the possible causes & scenarios, the guy was a bit hesitant to come to a conclusion whether the problem is with router, firmware or HTC, he was trying to push the blame on to HTC but I stuck to the point that your router might be faulty as it does connect initially and then breaks after sometime, which means the router cannot witheld the incoming data flow from HTC and obviously the HTC hardware for WiFi is not as par to the laptops WiFi...

After a little heated online chat session he adviced to try changing the channel and try. Initially it was set on Auto, SSID enabled with WPA/WPA2..
Since I have set the channel from Auto to a particular no, it has not given me a router restart.. its been nearly 5hrs..
If anyone need any help, give me a shout..

thanks

Hi all, I bought my HTC Hero just week ago and have same problem with dropping wifi signal. When I'm on open network or my friend's wifi it works great and it just ensure me that Hero is great phone.

It seems problem is with my router. I use DrayTek Vigor 2700 VGST with latest firmware. I tried allmost all suggestions from this thread, I installed wifi fixer, add MAC address, change security etc. but the problem with dropping signal persist so I thought if someone is using similar router and know how to fix it or what could be the problem.

If I install Wifi static, do I have to change router settings from dynamic IP to static? I'm not really into all this router stuff but thanks to Hero I've learned lot :)

I'd greatfull for any advise.

Thx

I was having similar problems with my Linksys WAG354G wireless router and my new HTC Hero (SIM free). I could connect to the wireless network (WEP with MAC address filtering) and I could get to various web servers on the network but when I tried an external address like google.com I didn't get anything. I tried the test suggested by spiri on the first page of this thread where you put in an IP for google instead ( 74.125.45.100 ) and it worked so I realised I have a DNS issue. After talking with a friend and after having similar issues on his network, we used a static IP configuration with an external DNS server address as DNS1 (Home button->menu button->settings-> wireless controls->Wi-Fi settings->menu button-> advanced->tick use static IP and edit settings) as I'm in Ireland I used both an Eircom and BT Ireland DNS server (BT: 194.125.2.240) and all is working fine!

Just thought I'd post my fix as it might help someone troubleshoot their own issues :)

I couldn't connect through my Netgear DG834PN and this sorted me out!

Thanks.

Perhaps listing routers that are "reported to work" and listing routers that are "reported to have issues" with the HTC Hero might be beneficial?

If a person was in the market for a new router they would have access to a list that would at least increase the probability of avoiding HTC Hero/wifi issues.

If a person was troubleshooting HTC Hero / Wifi issues they could quickly check to see if other people were having wifi issues when using that same brand/model of router.

Ever since I got my Hero I've had serious problems surfing the web via wifi with the built in browser and any other available browser as well. It worked with 3G and non-browser applications could access the net, podcast applications, Connectbot, market etc worked with Wifi.

The other week I glanced at my 3G APN settings (yes, in the phone!) and saw that it had a http proxy setting there (i.e. many mobile operators provide a proxy service for mobile surfing to speed things up). I thought, "WTF!, what if that stupid setting still is in effect when I browse the web via wifi?".

Well guys, I removed the two proxy settings (proxy host name and the proxy port (8080)) and voila! The problem is gone!

Since I did it I've never had this stupid problem. It is a bug that should be fixed but at least this could be a pretty good workaround!

Now, this could explain a lot of things in this thread, for example why it works for some and not for others.

So If you are having exactly this problem (i.e. you can't surf the web when connected only to wifi but other applications are available, market, connectbot, whatever that is not port-80 or proxy dependent) Take a glance at your APN settings of your 3G connection. Write the proxy settings down and try removing them!

Please post back if you succeed with this or not and if you indeed have a proxy setting there in the APN settings.

My mobile operator here in sweden is teliasonera and I have a dlink-DIR 855 router (european version).

Regards, Da9l.
