Root CyanogenMod 7 Unofficial Beta 5 02/20/12

actually now that you mention it I too am having issues installing any of the removed apps from that file...gonna redownload and see but i'm glad i'm not all by my lonesome on this

EDIT:

Removed due to a stupid post . Lack of sleep and reinstalling all the apps on this laptop and redoing the desktop has fried my brain . Heh , things are starting to get blurry  .

Hey Hroark...i was able to send pics on mms over wifi..allthough it had taken about 40 minutes to get from me to reciver..also im having trouble geting theme chooser apk and theme manager apk installed using root explorer..would you reccomend another way to install those two files?

there is a zip file for google maps in the second post

unzip that zip file add the apks you want into the system\app folder

rezip the files and folders and flash with CWM

Getting Cheapo 16GB class 10 in mail on Monday. Let's see what it does.

Just thought I should share, cheapo sd cards don't work well. I have a 32gb micro sd from china that gives me problems, main issue is I can't have 2 partitions for sd-ext so be careful.

Will beta 5 soon

okay tried the rezip thing with dspmanager and theme chooser and theme manager...no go didn't install in cwm and i mounted system and data beforehand just in case and they won't install in cm7 either..says "application not installed"

Okay here's an update for me at least...i got removed apps to work just had to "push" through "adb" into /system/app...then delete dalvik and reboot

Hroark, you are a very humble guy. Without your work in CWM and Odin where would we be?

Nothing wrong with CTMOD. Impressive on many levels including the CIQ removal.

But, you have CM7! That is a prestigious ROM that is a true status symbol on this phone. It gets attention and legitimizes cheap prepaid phones for once. Nobody else did it. You did. I know you had help but it is an awesome accomplishment. Be Proud.

I love CM7 and have never flashed back to CTMOD or anything else since I put it on.

I could not really care less about the wifi MMS thing. Don't get discouraged, find someone to delegate it to.

I have been having my notifications screen freeze up some lately. Just started happening last few days.

downloaded 5 and got my new SD today, but been too busy with other stuff to try them out.

Hopefully tomorrow.

You have no idea how much I appreciate what you do. This stuff has made me much more productive which could translate into money.

I can not thank you enough.

post your zip file somewhere so I can look at it

I used Bloods app installer for CWM and it didn't work either . Everything else is installing , Theme chooser themes and Theme chooser wallpaper . Just not the app that lets you apply them .

First off, this is an amazing rom. Within 1 day of owning this phone and scouring the forums, reading over the different roms, learning their strengths and weaknesses I immediately settled on this one. I was amazed by it, the look and feel the way it worked, everything (i think i started at beta 2 btw). I heard all the info about the other roms and went to try them, within an hour of installing them i came right back to your cm7 :D and i don't have any plans of going anywhere.

That being said, let me relay my few little things i found. I haven't had a chance to see if this new version does the same, but on beta 4 when i would accidentally clear an individual notification, it would sometimes freeze, i could still push the notification bar back up and could see new ones arrive on it, but nothing was clickable.

Something i have noticed on beta 5 though, I noticed you talking about the camera so i went to play with it, after taking a picture i can't seem to locate it, the little last picture display just shows a black picture instead of what i just took a picture of. Also upon closing the camera then reopening it, it shows the last picture i took before i upgraded to beta 5 (not the last one i took) I hope this helps and i'll post more as i find things :) keep up the great work hroark

I have to report the notification freezes on me as well when dropped down. Only way to fix is a reboot.. That is my only bug.

don't really care about mms over wifi. dont use wifi that much and when I do it's not to send a picture.

Hroark, CM7 is the shit!! imo CTMOD is alright but this ROM (even with the gliches) is the BY FAR the best one... Be proud man.. you made history here and still are. I flashed CTMOD several times and just cant get with it cuz the options and settings are just NOT there being on this ROM for so long.. and you are the shit for putting in all your time and effort into an otherwise undesired little pre-paid phone.. I mean I can do stuff that you can't do with a stock evo or a SGS2. think of how far of a stride that is......

EDIT: oh and wyelkins is right.. This has made me WAY more productive being an electrician and running my own company. I neeeed this phone and the stock laggy, crappy, ROM just would not cut it.. I would have bought another phone a long time ago if it wasn't for you.

So, Thank you Hroark13!!!

IMHO ..I like the way beta 5 is...I would rather go through and add what apps and other crap i like afterwords...Then have to go through and uninstall a bunch of things i dont need/wont use .Especially with as strange as Titanium backup has been acting lately..But thats just me..Also with Beta5, my phone feels much more responsive..Then i remember it being when i was running Beta4..

I'm with the rest here, CM7 is the best ROM going on the Prevail and we have you, Mr. hroark, to thank for that. Your efforts are greatly appreciated!

Now, having said that, I have found beta 5 to be somewhat of a misstep in some ways, even while it has advances, too. I do like the removal of a lot of the non-critical apps and I am totally cool with either ADW or Zeam launchers, makes no difference to me. I really do appreciate the technical advance and work involved in integrating the apps2sd functionality into the kernel. However, in my experience at least, it frequently lags in a major way, even though I have a good class 10 SD card. I suspect that this largely has to do with all of the /data directory being placed on the SD card. I was running beta 4 with S2E and I restored this configuration with a backup I made prior to trying beta 5. In my S2E setup I had left /data/data on internal memory and it does not suffer from lagginess at all; it just screams! In comparison, beta 5 is just not tolerable.

Hroark, do you think it would be possible to make the kernel in the ROM without the apps2sd functionality, then provide just the cwm flashable kernel with apps2sd functionality for those who want it? Or... and it's a stretch here, if my suspicion is true, can the implementation of apps2sd in the kernel be made to leave /data/data on internal memory somehow?

Hopefully I don't sound overly critical here, because that is not my intention at all. Just trying to provide an honest assessment based on my experience. Your work on this phone is simply amazing and has made this phone infinitely more usable for a lot of people! Thanks again.

There is going to be ALOT more kernels coming out soon, you should know why

for now try this, and tell me how it works

Prevail_cmbeta5_no_ext_BOOT_cwm.zip

Hey hroark i dont have alot of experience with unziping and reziping files..and i seem to be having alot of trouble with it..either that or im making something really easy really complicated..im using an evaluation version of winzip..would you reccomend someting different besides winzip ..maybe a different one that will unzip and rezip

Yes, I just picked up the new thread regarding your Kernel Factory! Awesome! Checking it out now... I used to customize my own Linux kernels years ago when I ran the Debian distro so this is fairly familiar to me.

Forgive me for asking, as it may seem obvious, but what does the above zip do exactly? Guessing "BOOT" is moved from sd-ext back to internal?

i removed the mount line in the init.sph-m820.rc that mounts /data to the sdcard second partition

it also has a new zImage with integrated ext4, and i removed the old ext4 modules and lines in the init.sph-m820.rc for the ext4 modules

got that
get it
done it
did it

P.S.

we need some Linux experts helping us with kernel and ROM dev

I am drafting you

Obey my cat
