Root Desire Root Guide For Newbies

Hi a quick question about radios - does it matter what radio you have (850 or 900 Mhz) or is this independent of software?

lekky, fantastic guide on how to root however im not too confident to try it, and with my run of luck at the moment i kno i will be the first to brick it, then again i want apps2sd, lol im getting twitchy fingers

Wow awesome. :)

Is there a Linux guide though? Well hopefully there will be by the time I get mine July 31.

I hate booting in Windows. :P

This is exactly what i felt. but this guide is really easy to follow. just follow it step by step and you will be fine. i have only rooted so i can get apps2sd too

Hey Lekky,

If I follow your guide up to number 5, but use my baked MCR zip rather than the rooted one you have provided will that work?

Or do I need to follow yours up to number 5 and then redo that process again but with the new ROM zip on my SD card?

Basically bricked my phone using the Windows method from Modaco so slightly worried about trying it again! (replacement phone is coming from Orange tomorrow morning! :-p)

Phone doesnt recognise my SD anymore (says SD Card Removed) and isnt detected when plugged into the PC... I also cant get onto the network at all... Thought it went ok, but cant do anything to it now, so gave up and phoned for a replacement as its only a couple weeks old...

Worried about doing it again, but really want root and an MCR at that... Managed to debrand it alright with my Goldcard, so thinking about just doing the same again, or just going straight for root this time with a freshly made Goldcard...

7. In the recovery image, Select Wipe > Wipe Data/Factory Reset using the optical trackpad

None of my buttons works in the recovery menu :( cant do anything.

I had the same issue... But found it to be the trackpad being crap... Try covering your thumb with a bit of clothing and then swipe on the pad... Worked for me... (not sure if some of the Desires pads are more difficult to use than others...)

Yea, tried a few more times and it worked! :D

Now I got a app called Superuser permissions, but it does not do anythgin!? Is that just a proof that I'm rooted?

And what do i do now? :P is there a site for rooted apps or an app like cydia for iphone?

and most important; If I format my microsd and/or resets the phone to fabric setting, will I keep the root?

The superuser icon shows its rooted
Also if you update with normal update it will remove the root

lekky could you give me a "how to" do this without the goldcard step as i have generic firmware. I just want to keep my stock HTC firmware and have root so i can do app2sd.

Thank you

Hi,

I'm an Android newbie but am really tempted to root my Desire as I have almost run out of phone memory already for apps. I have read through your guide and it seems fairly straight forward, however I have one question.

If for any reason I need to return my phone to T-Mobile for warranty repairs etc. is it possible to un-root and re-load the T-Mobile rom it came with? If so how would I go about doing this? Probably won't need to but want to make sure just in case!

Cheers

You would need to find the T-Mobile branded rom and flash it the same way as you flash the rooted rom in the guide

Can i ask as its really not clear. When running test ruu am i performing the full update?

I think this is the generic rom which is flashed.

noob question....

what is a gold card, what does it do? also, the desire i'm purchasing is unlocked and unbranded, do i still have to root it or will be already be rooted?

It won't already be rooted, but as its unbranded you can root without using a goldcard

Right I have rooted and it's great. I no longer keep geting the 'disk space low' message thanks to Apps2SD. My battery seems to be lasting a lot longer following the root too. Not sure if this is because of the root or something else and just a coincidence but I'm not complaining either way!
