Droid X 2.3 update

Why did the guy request that they blur part of the build number? There's nothing personal in there, right? And if it was pushed to him, he's not violating any sort of NDA to post it.

Back when the Samsung Fascinate was still on 2.1 and people were going nuts for 2.2, there were numerous photoshopped images showing alleged leaks.

One of which was quite interesting and a number of these "blog" sites ran with it. Verizon has the device support page we're familiar with. There's a PDF of the update info and on the page. The image that was posted was a screen shot showing Android 2.2 on the PDF file open in the window. Instead of the person downloading the PDF file, they chose only to post the picture with that in it.

Verizon magically pulled the PDF off and the 2.1 version was still there. There were also numerous images of phone screens that showed different version numbers and other stuff.

Keep in mind, with all the super geeks on this site that have a lot more reason to be involved with Motorola or Verizon, chances are good that someone on this site would have posted this as opposed to the typical "only one person out of millions got this."

My $0.02.

Verizon did this with the froyo update for the Ally, too. Every new phone that came after it got 2.2 before the Ally did. At least we know it exists and has made it into the wild. I'm hopeful we'll see it before Christmas. lol

Hi all. Ive got a stupid question. Can I get one
of the GB leaks installed on my phone?
I am completely stock and Not rooted yet .
If so can I go back to 2.2 to get the OTA if and
when it is sent out? If anyone could point me in the right
direction I certainly would appreciate it.
I am trying to read all the info i can on these
pages but you guys are Waaaay too technical for me right
now. I think Im having a brain overload trying to keep up.

Yes you can...and you can even do it without rooting if you feel like rooting is too technical for you (its really not i promise)

if you decide that you want to do it let me know and we will get you going

Thanks so much for offering help. Im pretty sure I would
like to be running GB after all the good things Ive been reading. Is it really as easy as downloading a file, renaming it then dropping it on my SD card from my computer?

One more question if you dont mind. Will this adversely affect any apps or possibly the launchers. Im on ADW EX currently. Thanx again.

Yes it's really that easy if you have the right version. I installed .588 and even though I backed everything up it was all good once the update finished (10 minutes). I've not had any issues with applications or launchers not working.

Once VZW releases the official gingerbread I will go to that. I'm a little scared of rooting...

NOW WHEN WILL THEY RELEASE IT IS A DIFFERENT QUESTION! I check this forum every day... sometimes two or three or twelve times a day!

;)

I talked with a Verizon rep who had the .596 build on a Droid X as part of the final testing. He said the test period was through the 26th, so if everything checked out in the test we could see it before June. If not, well, I guess we get pushed out again...

Does anyone on 588/591/595 have data encryption on their phone? He mentioned that as a feature of 596, and I think that may be what the hold up is. He said they added the encryption as a tool for corporate use, and it actually ends up mitigating the battery improvements of GB since it was passively encrypting all data transmissions. One thing I just hadn't heard mentioned about the other builds and was curious.

I don't mean to interrupt the flow of this thread but, I just don't have the time to read through every post. I'm seeing a lot of talk about automatic updates to GB? I'm bone stock froyo and just checked for updates and it says I up to date.

Is it all still up in the air at this point about auto update to GB? Still have to go rooted and get a leaked version?

You'll get a notification that an update is available at some point. As of right now there is no update, what you're running is considered current by Verizon.

That's what I figured, but I thought I'd ask those a little more in tune with what's happening. Thanks ;)

It's important to note that it says "...susceptible to attack when they are connected to unencrypted Wi-Fi networks..."
Isn't this bascially true anytime you are connected to an unsecrued/unencrypted WI-FI? Be computer/smartphone safe, people!

text from link provided:

A significant security hole has been discovered in Google's Android operating system for smartphones, which can allow attackers to gain access to users' personal information without their permission.
The flaw, which was discovered by three research assistants at Ulm University in the southern part of Germany, affects approximately 97% of Android users.
In a recent blog post, the researchers found that users of Android devices running versions 2.3.3 and below could be susceptible to attack when they are connected to unencrypted Wi-Fi networks. Anyone else on that network could gain access to, modify or delete Android users' calendars, photos and contacts.

"It is quite easy," the researchers wrote in a blog post. "The implications of this vulnerability reach from disclosure to loss of personal information."
A spokesman for Google said the company is aware of this issue, and a fix is already in place for the calendar and contacts applications in the latest versions of Android, codenamed "Gingerbread" and "Honeycomb." A solution is also in the works for Google's Picasa photo sharing service, he said.
Only about 3% of Android users have the latest versions of the operating system, but Google said Android users running older versions will get a fix "in the next few days." Users don't need to take any action, and the patch will roll out globally.

Where in the world is 2.3?......

I know there's been 4 leaks by now and at one point was running one of them. I'm back to rooted froyo and as pissed as everybody else not on one of these leaks. Not to mention every thread regarding gingerbread always merges into a thread telling everyone to install a leak.

I think its about time to establish a thread of this like. That's right this is for all of us disgruntled froyo users who don't care to venture back down the road that leads to a leaked gingerbread install. Please don't mention or suggest installing a leak to anyone on here, this is to come to for actual news regarding the official ota update, venting or theories of why there's no communication regarding an official release date.

Disgruntled?

What, precisely, makes you disgruntled?

How many phones are running official Gingerbread right now?

Why do you think you're entitled to a release of software that's not in widespread adoption?

And what in the WORLD would make you want software that wasn't dubbed "ready for release" - i.e. full of bugs? The reason software developers don't post release dates is because bugfixes are tedious and imprecise. Finding a bug doesn't mean you know the cause or how to fix it, so it's a lot of troubleshooting, trial and error, and testing.

Sorry didn't mean to come off disgruntled, and your points are entirely valid and correct. Just tired of trying to find news (if any) regarding (when) and every thread I find almost always end up with leak installs. Looking forward like anybody else to a release add to the impatience factor.

If you want a theory here you go. Verizon is releasing several new phone and only one of these is running Gingerbread. How stupid would verizon look if they released the upgraded version DroidX2 yesterday with 2.2 and the old out of date DroidX was getting the 2.3 upgrade. My guess is the DX and the DX2 will both get Gingerbread about the same time, which you think should be easy to do.

I also wonder if the update to Gingerbread was too good for Verizon's liking. I have been running every leak and love Gingerbread and the newest one is the best. They are all IMHO a major improvement over FroYo. So if Verizon wants to get new sales from people who may be on a DX they would not want to push out a great update just days before releasing several new phones to be sold and only one of those on 2.3.

Just a couple theories.

Hmm... ;)

You're tired of trying to find news because there is no news. You will see the news when it comes out. Nobody quietly posts leaked release news in a thread started by someone saying, "post here when you have news!"

News gets posted on news sites and in new threads announcing its presence.

Gingerbread is still a relatively new release and is on very few phones yet so it's not like Moto is behind the times. If anything, we have a pretty damn stable, not-very-buggy leaked release so we're ahead of the game.

i'm not pissed at all and i'm perfectly fine with staying on .595 if they never even release an official GB build. Also there have been numerous threads of this nature already started.
