Root gingerbread news!

for a follow up on this...apparently 3.4.2 is the version of Blur that the Atrix has on it

Interesting... Not surprising, either. Moto must have just decided that if they were upgrading X to Gingerbread, they may as well not do two software rollouts with the associated headaches.

Probably wanted the updated Blur out on their latest and greatest phone to differentiate, though.

Right, exactly what I was thinking...the Atrix releases...they want it to have the latest version of Blur available...so it gets 3.4.2...they have builds for each of their phones, but decide not to push out 3.4.2 to the other devices because GB is right around the corner...

Now this is a great question jump on an (as of yet) unrooted version of Gingerbread or stay on 2.2.340 with root. I would normally say I want root and noting could make me jump to something we don't know if we can root or not. However knowing that we can still SBF back to .340 if needed and the overall hype this build is getting I may make the jump as well. From the sounds this will run better than any of the current custom ROMs out there. I wonder what the battery life is like on this build, if it is improved at all that will seal the deal and I will jump over.

ill wait for root
i cant put up with the adds/ no wifi hotspot/ other stuff

edit: clarification.

I'm currently wondering what the battery life of this build is. That is the only thing now holding me back.

I'll probably give it a try since I can sbf back to 2.3.340......but if wifi is not working like faber mentioned, unless I misinterpreted his post, I probably won't be using it for long.....hmmmm

opps....i meant no wifi hotspot....or maybe you meant that too....figuring needing root for that....didnt mean wifi reception....

Oh ok, that makes more sense......I only used wifi hotspot once (maybe twice ;)), and that was just to test that it worked.

I'm sure it will get rooted eventually, it's just a question of when.

I am downloading it now, but it is slow with everyone trying to get their hands on it. I did hear one person who just got it downloaded and flashed and on the first boot had a quadrant score around 1840. I know this does not mean everything, but that is flying!

I am going to hold off on this one (although it is very tempting). I rely on my Titanium backups and other root specific apps and will wait for a rooted GB release (hopefully in the near future).

+1 on that... Can't root? not the way I wanna roll. Going to have to wait it out, I suppose

Gingerbread is making my DX feel like a brand new phone! I seriously never expected anything official this good, improvement wise.

I was also a bit confused at installing it, but this helped me:

This is a sarcastic but complete installation guide someone posted earlier today on page 44 in the leak thread. It worked 100% for me with no issues at all.

Most of this comes from my guide on installing Liberty, adapted for the GB leak. I've modified it to be a little more insulting as well. If you're reading this you probably need it. Maybe someone who isn't so sad at looking at these comments will make it nice again.

z4root - [APP] z4root - xda-developers
Droid X Recovery Bootstrap - https://market.android.com/details?i...oidx.bootstrap
TeamBlackHat Download Manager - https://market.android.com/details?i...hat.leakloader

Have the leak?
Do you already have the leak? Skip ahead to the next section.

If you don't have the leak, do the TBH guys a mitzvah and buy their app. Then download the Full Gingerbread (2.3.3) SBF file (update.zip format) (DROIDX). Seriously do yourself a favor for when you screw this up: also get RSDLite and the Froyo 2.2.1 SBF file.

If you aren't stupid, buy the TBH app and download the file from the first link in this thread. And check the goddamn MD5 hash. If you get the file this way and it is incomplete/corrupt it is your own goddamn fault.

Rooted?
Do you already have root? Skip ahead to the next section.

First you'll need to go into your phone Settings, Application Settings. Check off "Unknown sources" and then go into the Development section and enable "USB Debugging". Download z4root to your phone and install. Head into the application and choose permanent root. If it takes more than a few minutes, reboot your phone and try again. I've never had it take more than a minute, but it can take a few. Once it's done rooting it will reboot your phone. Tada! You're rooted.

Bootstrapped?
Are you already bootstrapped? Read this anyway, part of it still applies to actually getting into CWM.

Next up we're installing Droid X Bootstrap. Since you're dumb you know the only place you can get it is from the market. Since the Droid X has a locked down bootloader we need Bootstrap to get into custom recovery. Once Bootstrap is installed, go into it. Choose Bootstrap Recovery, it'll give you a success prompt when it's done. If you didn't you're stupid and didn't root correctly. Just give up now. Then click reboot recovery. You're about to be in Clockworkmod Recovery (CWM)! While you're in here, you use the volume up/down keys to navigate, the camera button to select (full press!) and the back button to go back up.

Once you're in CWM first things first is to make a backup. I like to wipe the cache partition before a backup because it's a waste of backup space. Up to you. Go down to "backup and restore", select it and finally make a backup. This is your easy way out should you not like where you're going.

Once you back everything up it's time to stop and think. No, really. That soft, squishy thing inside your skull is really being put to the task here. Are you really sure you want to do this? Ok then. Go back to the top menu of CWM and choose wipe data/factory reset!

Install the leak already
Did you have second thoughts? Go restore the backup I told you to make. You didn't make a backup? I hate you.

You really want to try out Gingerbread? Let's do it then! Choose "install zip from sdcard" and then "choose zip from sdcard". It'll give you a view of your SD card. Go choose the Gingerbread file you downloaded. If you were a good little boy and used the TBH app it'll be in a folder on your SD card called It'll take a little while to install and then you're set! Reboot and you're off to enjoy some Gingerbread goodness.

Did you get an error? This one might not actually be your fault provided you used the TBH app. Go check the file size of the zip file. RootExplorer tells me the file is 172.91MB. If yours is that size, plug the phone into the computer and check the MD5 hash given in the first post. If they don't match, download again.

Sync icon keeps spinning?
You goddamn moron, you skipped the data wipe didn't you? Die in a fire.

Everything is running great?
I love you, you're a good Android lover. Spread happiness and love in this world by helping others. <3

Download Z4Root to your SD Card.
Backup current rom.
Install GB.

When disappointment/boredom/anger kicks in...

SBF.
Battery pull (or Reset/clear data if that doesn't work) if it bootloops more than 5 minutes. (Hold down home button and power on the phone. Press search button to enter recovery.)
Activate, enter Gmail acct.
Install Root explorer (or similar app) from market, browse for Z4Root on /sdcard and install, download and install bootstrap via market.
Reboot.
Run Z4Root ASAP when booting up should get you rooted w/in a minute or two. If not rooted by 2 minutes, changing usb modes once a minute while plugged into your computer will speed up rooting. When you're rooted, it should reboot your phone.
Go to recovery bootstrap, tap the top button, "success", then tap the second button to go into recovery and restore your backup.

It's been rooted, posted by P3Droid about 7mins ago. We have to wait for instructions, but you have to start out at 2.3.340 to root GB :D:D:D
