Root [GUIDE] Brick Recovery

Are you sure you are in download mode and not fastboot? In download mode the screen should look like the screenshot shown in the first post. In fastboot mode, you should see some text in the upper part of your screen, with something like "fastboot processing commands" near the end of that text.

Normally to get into fastboot on the Volt we have to wipe the laf partition. When you do that, it disables access to download mode and enables access to fastboot instead. If your phone has a bad laf partition, you might be able to get into fastboot but not download mode.
Its in fastboot mode. Because I see the text at the top of the screen. If I am in fastboot then what do I need to do to fix my phone?

So confused.
Okay to clear up the confusion, my friend flashed the wrong laf image and that hard bricked the phone. I cant get into fastboot or download mode now. But before he flashed the wrong laf image I could get into fastboot but not download mode. Is there any way to wipe the laf image that my friend put on there if the phone won't even turn on.?

You need to tell us what you need help with. If you don't have a computer available and your phone is not on zv3, you cannot root at this time. Downgrading to zv3 is mandatory, and the only way to do that is with a computer that you can install drivers and software on. The guide is as explainative as it gets.

Why do you want root?

If you're not sure if you're on zv3, try to use towelroot. If it works, you're on zv3. If it doesn't, then you aren't.

If you don't know how to tell if you're on zv3, you might want to reconsider rooting.

Without being able to gain any access to the phone (download mode or fastboot mode), I have no clue how to help you. There may well be no help for you at this point. This is why you don't flash things from other phones. You shouldn't have let your friend do that. I told you all you needed to do was flash the radio img with fastboot and that would restore your laf.

Are you and somystique the same person? You two are replying to each others responses. o_O

Ok thank you for trying to help man really appreciate it. I am a savvy android user but I just made a mistake. Ill figure something out(:

You can install zv5 without wiping, but there seem to be some small buggy things that you need to do a factory reset to fix. This is why it's best to just go all the way through in one shot. You can always backup your data first.

Is it worth updating to zv5?

What about zv4? My volt is stable in zv3, I've used root to do all the things I wanted (get rid of programs), and I removed root/SU, things couldn't be better. The only annoyance is the popup every few days with an update notification, which then doesn't install. I don't suppose I could root and remove the updater?

I did not realize you were on zv3 still... Yes, I would recommend updating. Reduced RAM use, better cell performance, smoother operation. Of course, it's up to you. If you don't want to update, disable notification from Google play services and then delete the update zip in /cache/

You didn't have to unroot. You can disable root in SuperSU.

so i cant get the lg tool to work right or even start it says "the application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect, refer to application event log or use the command sxstrace.exe tool" anybody have any ideas?when i install it, the microsoft c++ distributable doesn't install all the way..help..

I installed the zv5 that it automatically downloaded and now it keeps booting into recovery. How do I make it boot normally? I tried flashing the rooted zv5 and radio, wiping data, etc. but it still boots into recovery every time I reboot.

You have to downgrade and start over again. Never flash an OTA update on a rooted device, especially one with custom recovery.

I uninstalled root and super SU because they were taking up a bunch of internal memory, and because I didn't really need them anymore.
