Root [GUIDE] Brick Recovery

Try uninstalling all phone related drivers and software from the computer, including the ones you need for this. Reboot, reinstall the LG drivers, reboot. Try again. There could be a port conflict or something to that effect.
Same result, I even tried on a different computer with the same result.

What operating system is the other computer that never had any phone drivers installed? On the Windows 7 machine, make sure (very important) any and all drivers and software for LG and the old HTC are uninstalled. Reboot. When it boots up, open "Control Panel". Now, go to "Settings" on your LG Volt and scroll down to tap "PC connection". Make sure "Select USB connection method" is set to "Media sync (MTP)" and that "Ask upon connecting" is unchecked. Reboot phone. Plug in phone via USB to computer after it boots up. Take note of the connected device notification on lower right corner of computer and what it says. Now, on the computer, open "Device Manager" from inside "Control Panel" and scroll all the way down to "Universal Serial Bus controllers". You should see your connected device somewhere below that section. Right click and then go down and click "Uninstall". Once it is uninstalled, unplug the phone from the USB and reboot the computer. Install LG drivers and software and then connect phone. Computer should now recognize your LG Volt.

Sorry Malaci, I was trying to reply to you. If the other computer is different OS, let me know...
The operating system is also Win 7 64bit. The second computer has never had anything downloaded to it, its a completely new install of Windows. When I try to boot the phone normally I get...

[360] fastboot_init()
[460] USB init ept @ 0xffdf000
[480] udc_start()"

When I try to boot into recovery, I see the "Factory Reset Processing" but then the screen goes black and nothing happens. I have a LS720 I can use for now so im hoping there is a fix, if not I plan on just sending it in to LG.

Hello Everyone, has anyone attempted, or heard of, trying to downgrade from stock zv5?

Yes. That is about the first half of the OP. You can remain downgraded but there is no real benefit. If you want to root ZV4/5, follow the entire guide in the OP. In the guide you will downgrade, root, install TWRP, and then flash pre-rooted ZV5.

Ok, I've been reading through everything I can find. Is there a simple enough way to create an image of my current installation, before I hit the point of no return? Thanks for the help.

Your phone may have an issue, but I feel it can be resolved with a computer. Both computers recognizing it as your old HTC phone? You must have connected your old HTC after the fresh OS install. Unless the OS is (ahem, cough, cough) a copy? Try a different USB cable if possible and a different USB port.

The Second computer is my mother in laws HP, we got her a new one for Christmas. I just used the restore discs that came with the laptop and set it back to factory defaults. My old HTC has not even been powered on since about 2 months ago. Its been sitting on my desk since then. When the phone is in download mode, and right after the LG Flash Tool fails, the phone says
_______________
HTCEVOV4G 4.0.3
LS740

Rooted
_______________

I still have the same sd card that I used in the old HTC, and some of my old back-ups were still on there. I removed the sd card and tried again on the assumption that it was as simple as that and still got the same results. The only thing i can think of is that the phone thinks its my HTC for some reason. Is it possible that there is some correlation with my problem and my old HTC back-ups? If so, is there any way to rectify the problem, or am I better off sending it to be repaired?

I have to say this is quite weird if I'm understanding you correctly that the phone itself is saying it is the HTC. Try formatting the SD card and doing a factory reset on the phone.

Yes, those HTC backups might be the problem. It's strange, but perhaps something from old HTC might have written to the phone itself somehow. Malaci, disconnect your phone from the computer.

Do this on your computer and then your mother in law's HP without connecting the phone:

Make sure (very important) any and all drivers and software for LG and the old HTC are uninstalled. Reboot. Open from "Start Menu" and right click on "Computer" and then select "Properties". From the left side panel of the system window, click on "Advanced system settings" and then go down on the middle tab named "Advanced" to click on "Environment Variables". Now, under the "User variables" box at the top, click on "New" and type "devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices" without the quotation marks in the top "Variable name" text box and then the number "1" without the quotation marks in the bottom "Variable value" box. Click "OK" to close out each open window and finally close the system window. Now, log off the computer and then log on again. Open "Device Manager" from inside "Control Panel" and click on the "View" tab on the menu bar at the top of the device manager window and then select "Show hidden devices". Scroll all the way down to "Universal Serial Bus controllers" and expand it by clicking on the little triangle and you will see branches in the device tree. Look for the faded icons. These indicate unused device drivers. Right click on each one and select "Uninstall". Go up a few to "Portable Devices" in the device manager window and expand it if available. Look for faded icons and uninstall these as well. Close out device manager and reboot computer. Install LG drivers and software. Computers should now recognize your LG Volt if the phone was properly working.

Let's try and find the problem with the phone now. Can you back track all that you have done or tried to the phone in order? Take out the SD card and leave it out. Reboot the phone. What happens? Can you do a factory reset?

OK, so I have read several pages of the beginning of this thread and several of the last few pages. I have one question and one question/concern.

My Volt is LS740ZV4
First, is it best to root before upgrade to ZV5, or install the upgrade and then root?

Question/Concern... There is 16 pages to this thread with several users having issues and they may be the minority... Is this a lengthy process (3 to 4 hours) or something that can be done in an hour or two? I have only ever rooted one device before, LG Optimus V with GingerBreak and it was simple, one app to run and done. This long process, multiple steps with tools, software and acronyms I never hear of before doesn't give me a warm and fuzzy feeling. I live on a tight budget, don't to brick my phone, or go with out it for a day or so... Can anyone ease my concerns and give me feeling of confidence in this root process?

Ok im new to all this but when u guys say theres step by step instructions in this guide where do i find the guide lol and how do i find out if my volt is zv3 or 4 or whatever?

Go to page one of this thread for instructions.
If you go into your settings + about phone + software information. At the bottom of this menu is your software version.

It doesn't matter if you upgrade or not. The entire phone will be wiped when you downgrade. So no, don't bother with upgrading.

Most of the problems that have been encountered have resulted from user error. The other issues arise from old drivers from other phones getting in the way. About to add removal of old drivers to the guide, actually.

As for your personal concerns about your ability to do this, ask questions. We don't know what you do or don't know, so we can only help if you ask specifics. :)

many thanks fly to members at other forums that have helped me make wifi tethering possible with their posts but this one was most helpful - bg4m3r - over at android forums for this guide for rooting and many thanks fly to asmugone for getting the stock zv3 tot file and to whoshotjr2006 for TWRP and to kwknott for the zv5 ROM

if you want to easily get ad-hoc / wifi tethering check out

You have to root to install TWRP (custom recovery BE SURE TO MAKE A BACKUP!) so you can then install pre-rooted ZV5. If you want to tweak and theme, use the deodexed ZV5 otherwise it doesn't matter.

It should be no more than 2 hours. It was about 2 on my old and slow pc (like year 2k old and slow)

I understand that this may look a little bit scary, it was for me considering I had only used one click root apks before, but once you get started you begin to understand what some of those unknown things are and it then becomes easier. Just follow the guide exactly and "you'll be golden pony boy"

Good luck!!!

EDIT: Oh, and like @bg4m3r said, never be afraid to ask questions, this entire community is built to help each other!

I had upgraded to zv5 before I downgraded and rooted because I wanted to back up all of the odexed apps from zv5. I'm glad I did because some were missing from the zv5 odexed ROM that I wanted.

What's missing?

The deodex ROM appeared to have everything.
